Download or read book The Mirror written by Marlys Millhiser and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2015-05-05 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this twisting time-travel thriller, a woman faints on the eve of her wedding—and awakens at the turn of the century in her grandmother’s body . . . The night before she is supposed to get married, Shay Garrett has no idea that a glimpse into her grandmother’s antique Chinese mirror will completely transform her seemingly ordinary life. But after a bizarre blackout, she wakes up to find herself in the same house—but in the year 1900. Even stranger, she realizes she is now living in the body of her grandmother, Brandy McCabe, as a young woman. Meanwhile, Brandy, having looked into the same mirror, awakens in Shay’s body in the present day—and discovers herself pregnant. As Rachael—the woman who links these two generations, mother to one and daughter to another—weaves back and forth between two time periods, this imaginative thriller explores questions of family, identity, and love. Courageous, compassionate Shay finds herself fighting against the confines of a society still decades away from women’s liberation, while Brandy struggles to adapt to the modern world she has suddenly been thrust into. The truth behind this inexplicable turn of events is more complex than either woman can imagine—and The Mirror is a tribute to the triumph of the female spirit, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. “What happens will surprise you. In the meantime, settle down for a good read.” —The Denver Post

Book excerpt: Welcome to Gudhemma (God's home) in 1971, a central Minnesota town that was originally founded by Swedish Baptist immigrants. Meet Buddy Jenson, the fifty-one-year-old proprietor of the town's shame...the Gudhemma Saloon. Simple, honest, and the human embodiment of unconditional love, Buddy has lived his life burdened by feelings of unworthiness and a guilt that makes it far more difficult for him to accept such love than to give it. Shrewd and adventurous Serena Jenson inherited her grandfather Buddy's loveable, intuitive, and frank nature. She capitalizes on her circumstances by sheer audacity when she befriends the Baptist minister's two boys on the first day of school. Thus begins the rollicking ride of growing up, culminating in the realization that she loves Steve, the oldest of the brothers. But with that realization, she feels compelled to discover the secrets of her parentage. Steve Peterson shares Serena's spirit for adventure, but he is forever reconciling his actions to the behavior expected of the minister's son. His heaviest moment of introspection arrives when a parishioner is suspected of foul play, and Steve thinks that the entire situation could've been circumvented if he'd told his father what he'd witnessed a year earlier.
Download or read book Native American Performance and Representation written by S. E. Wilmer and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native performance is a multifaceted and changing art form as well as a swiftly growing field of research. Native American Performance and Representation provides a wider and more comprehensive study of Native performance, not only its past but also its present and future. Contributors use multiple perspectives to look at the varying nature of Native performance strategies. They consider the combination and balance of the traditional and modern techniques of performers in a multicultural world. This collection presents diverse viewpoints from both scholars and performers in this field, both Natives and non-Natives. Important and well-respected researchers and performers such as Bruce McConachie, Jorge Huerta, and Daystar/Rosalie Jones offer much-needed insight into this quickly expanding field of study. This volume examines Native performance using a variety of lenses, such as feminism, literary and film theory, and postcolonial discourse. Through the many unique voices of the contributors, major themes are explored, such as indigenous self-representations in performance, representations by nonindigenous people, cultural authenticity in performance and representation, and cross-fertilization between cultures. Authors introduce important, though sometimes controversial, issues as they consider the effects of miscegenation on traditional customs, racial discrimination, Native women’s position in a multicultural society, and the relationship between authenticity and hybridity in Native performance. An important addition to the new and growing field of Native performance, Wilmer’s book cuts across disciplines and areas of study in a way no other book in the field does. It will appeal not only to those interested in Native American studies but also to those concerned with women’s and gender studies, literary and film studies, and cultural studies.

Download or read book The Arboreal Alchemist written by Somsubhra Banerjee and published by Ukiyoto Publishing. This book was released on 2023-09-22 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the gentle embrace of nature, we often find moments that elude our hurried gaze, secrets that only the patient observer can truly grasp. “The Arboreal Alchemist: Poetry through Nature’s Eyes”” is a poetry collection that invites readers to slow down, to listen closely, and to feel deeply the voices of nature. In these verses, I seek to personify the elements of the natural world, giving voice to the silent wonders that surround us daily. With humility and reverence, I present this collection, a humble offering to the eternal beauty of the Earth. The verses within these pages breathe life into the seemingly mundane. They celebrate the rustle of leaves as they gossip with the wind, the shimmering dance of sunlight on water, and the ancient wisdom of towering oaks. The poems are born from moments when I, like all of us, have failed to truly see the world around me, moments when I yearned to perceive nature as she perceives us. The tone of this collection is one of reverence and humility. Nature, in her infinite wisdom, serves as both the muse and the mentor. The words flow gently, like a babbling brook, as I strive to capture the profound beauty and wisdom that lies within every rock, tree, cloud and gust of wind. It is a humble endeavour to offer gratitude to the silent forces that shape our world. As you immerse yourself in these poems, you will find that they evoke a sense of wonder and introspection. They encourage the reader to reflect on the small miracles that often go unnoticed—the delicate intricacy of a spider’s web, the steadfast endurance of a mountain, or the relentless cycle of seasons. Each poem reminds us that the world is alive with stories waiting to be heard. There are some surprises in the form of humour and nostalgia as well strewn across the collection.

Destined to be the next beloved dystopian novel." —Brigit Young, author of The Prettiest In the town of Gladder Hill, there's no such word as ugly. Or beautiful. Zailey has never seen her own face. She's never seen her reflection, or a photo of herself, or even a drawing. In the special community of Gladder Hill, cameras and mirrors are forbidden: it's why everyone's happier here. Nobody talks about anyone else's appearance. You're not supposed to even think about what other people look like, or what you look like. But Zailey does. She knows her superficial thoughts are wrong, and her sketchbook, filled with secret portraits of her classmates and neighbors, could get her in trouble. Yet she can't help but think those thoughts, and be curious about the outside world where she once lived, years ago. Most of all, she wonders what it's like to see herself—her own face. When Zailey suddenly finds herself beyond the gates of her town, she has a chance to see if what she's been taught about the outside world is true and search for the mother she barely remembers. Only then will she find out the real story about Gladder Hill. But is she prepared for the truth?

Download or read book Barley Corn John written by David Bailey and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2018-03-15 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a tale that can be enjoyed by all ages, though some of the inferences may be lost on the very young readers. Many individual chapters can stand by themselves as they depict today's concerns-notably, corporate greed and how it is solved by Barley Corn. No money, no problem. When you want to sneak into the state fair, even though you promised not to do so, you take an "oath" to "always" sneak in. An oath always supersedes a promise. The book spins a tale of a tall villain who is in pursuit of Barley and his friend. This, after Barley and his friend witnessed the villain (Tunnel Man) shooting two people. Barley accidently kills a bear with a Civil War sword. This puts his name and picture in the newspaper. Tunnel Man sees the paper identifying Barely and his whereabouts. The chase is on. Belief in ghosts, childhood adventure and misadventure, are a part of the story. Some of the chapters are based on actual happening-notably, the apology in church as seen by the author in his early youth. At the heart, this is a fun book filled with dreamy humor and youthful adventure.
