Baking was just not restricted to making bread; you made biscuits, patties, pancakes, cakes, pies, and anything you wished with some oil, flour, eggs, milk and other healthy ingredients made up into a batter. After that, you just put it in a pan, put it in the oven, and allowed the heat to work its magic. Many of the baking recipes being used in grandma's time, - and even before her time - have been passed down through the ages for generations. Not only were they tested and proven and eaten regularly, they were for the most part simple and yet unusual. In nearly all of them, the only ingredients needed were basic items which grandma kept on hand at all times. The modern-day bakery with its wide selection of readymade cakes and pastries and also food manufacturers, turning out new package mixes and delicious frozen delicacies have taken much of the fun out of home baking. So is it a surprise that not many youngsters of the coming generations bother much about learning how to cook, especially baking. That is because all these ready-made goods are wonderfully convenient and inviting, but most homemakers still enjoy home baking, now and then, when they have the time, energy and inclination. So it does not matter whether you are an experienced home Baker or just a newbie starting out to learn the really interesting new activity of home baking - this book is going to give you plenty of tips and techniques, where you can take full advantage of improved ingredients, reliable recipes, laborsaving appliances and controlled temperature equipment to help you bake that perfect cake. Each time, every time. That means you can have your cake and eat it too.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With The Hip Girl's Guide to Homemaking, it's possible and even convenient to create an inviting space for living and entertaining on a budget. From unique decor ideas to growing strawberries on your fire escape, Kate Payne shares fun, low-cost (and often free!) creative solutions that will make anyone feel more accomplished in minutes. Inside this savvy motivational guide filled to the brim with small-scale creative home projects, Kate's tongue-in-cheek tone will keep you tuned in to her much-needed advice. In three easy sections, you'll learn how to create a comfortable space while being time- and budget-conscious. Section One, Home-ify Your Pad, features quick, convenient ways to make your place cozier with low-cost, special touches to help you tap into and show off your inner artist. Section Two, Impressive Acts of Domesticity, teaches how to impress others (and yourself) with the gratifying pleasures of self-sufficiency—a first-time guide to cleaning, sewing, repairing, and other previously out-of-the-question tasks. Section Three, Life After Restaurants, frees you to release the take-out menu, avoid pricey bar tabs, and entertain others in the space you've so thoughtfully and gorgeously created. User-friendly "how-to" sidebars, illustrations, and tips and tricks throughout the book offer easy-to-follow recipes and do-it-yourself craft suggestions for making your home hip, comfortable, and inviting. Keep in mind that this is not your grandmother's handbook and it's not the kind of wisdom your mom knows how to impart. Modern women need a modern approach to domestic pleasures—a guide to doing household things on our own terms, because most of this stuff isn't as hard as we've been led to believe. Don't worry, she's not asking you to host Tupperware parties or iron your underwear. But as all beginning home keepers know, a sure fire way to feel bad about ourselves is to consult Martha Stewart. So ditch that 2-inch thick handbook, dust off your pots and pans, and join Kate on this journey to incorporating creativity and self-sufficiency on the home front.

Book excerpt: 2020 James Beard Award Winner The major new cookbook by the pioneer from Bread Alone, who revolutionized American artisan bread baking, with 60 recipes inspired by bakers around the world. At twenty-two, Daniel Leader stumbled across the intoxicating perfume of bread baking in the back room of a Parisian boulangerie, and he has loved and devoted himself to making quality bread ever since. He went on to create Bread Alone, the now-iconic bakery that has become one of the most beloved artisan bread companies in the country. Today, professional bakers and bread enthusiasts from all over the world flock to Bread Alone's headquarters in the Catskills to learn Dan's signature techniques and baking philosophy. But though Leader is a towering figure in bread baking, he still considers himself a student of the craft, and his curiosity is boundless. In this groundbreaking book, he offers a comprehensive picture of bread baking today for the enthusiastic home baker. With inspiration from a community of millers, farmers, bakers, and scientists, Living Bread provides a fascinating look into the way artisan bread baking has evolved and continues to change--from wheat farming practices and advances in milling, to sourdough starters and the mechanics of mixing dough. Influenced by art and science in equal measure, Leader presents exciting twists on classics such as Curry Tomato Ciabatta, Vegan Brioche, and Chocolate Sourdough Babka, as well as traditional recipes. Sprinkled with anecdotes and evocative photos from Leader's own travels and encounters with artisans who have influenced him, Living Bread is a love letter, and a cutting-edge guide, to the practice of making "good bread."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wanda was born April 2, 1943 to Leonard and Alice Peterson at Door County Memorial Hospital where she is now a Registered Nurse in Obstetrics. She is the second of 12 children -- 6 boys and 6 girls. Despite the loss of two children, the Peterson family was (and still is) a close family -- learning to help each other and learning about unconditional love. Taught with guidance, the children learned that God and family work together to mold our lives. In 1970, the family bought the Rowleys Bay Resort, known today as Wagon Trail Resort. It is famous not only as a family resort and conference center, but especially as the home of Grandma's Swedish Bakery (now in 2 locations -- Ellison Bay and Sturgeon Bay) and Grandma's Swedish Restaurant. In this book, Wanda shares some of the recipes and memories of the family "before Wagon Trail." Without the foundation and determination of Alice Peterson ("Mom" and "Grandma"), this abundance of bakery goods and home-cooked food would not be available today. Hospitality was a key ingredient in the recipe of life taught to the Peterson children and continues today at the Wagon Trail. Alice Peterson passed away suddenly January 10, 1988, but the lessons she taught continue to influence people today. Book jacket.
