Book excerpt: Excerpt from Grandfather's Tales of North Carolina History, Vol. 9 Then we thought it might be a useful offering to the public and to our schools and perhaps give a new stimulus to the State love Of the rising generation and cause them to know more Of their illustrious progenitors, and to emulate their virtues and their patriotic deeds. One boulder was in our pathway. It costs labor to pre pare a book for publication. But we were raised to hard work and were never afraid Of it. But, in addition to that, there's much expense in money in getting a book be fore the public, and we never had the gift Of money-get ting and we were largely gifted with the talent for getting rid of it, which talent, we honestly confess, we have never hid in a napkin, but cultivated assiduously by constant practice - that is to say, when we had it to get rid of. However, we have never been an Elijah that the ravens had to feed. SO we looked around to accomplish by our wits what our purse refused to do. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1895 edition. Excerpt: ... PREFACE. As the firm foundation of a house is less attractive than the painted columns and modillions which it supports, so the first chapter of our story is the stratum of understanding that underlies a more beautiful fabric of knowledge. It locates the scenes in Western North Carolina, on the great evergreen Grandfather Mountain, whose highest point is the everlasting cornerstone of three counties, Watauga, Caldwell, and Mitchell. The object of the author has been to supply the great need of a book that would introduce to the outside world a section of country which, until recently, has been almost unknown and obscure, but nevertheless is rich in soil, replete with iron ore, and with fine forests of valuable trees, checkered with rapid, flowing streams of limpid water, decked with a thousand hills, fortressed with ponderous mountains tall and rugged, and pictured with wild and varied landscapes. The writer was cradled in the loving arms of maternal toil in one of the first rude log cabins constructed in the morning and evening shadows of the beautiful mountains with which he has grown up in love, and every scene described is as familiar to him as were the blooming vines in which the humming-birds nestled around the home of his childhood. "The Balsam Groves of the Grandfather Mountain" is a story founded on facts. The roads, streams, fountains, places, mquntains, and distances are real; the picture of the character Rollingbumb will be hailed with delight by thousands of mountaineers, who will recognize it as the likeness of a familiar friend; the description of the Salmer estate on the banks of the Linville will touch to tears a prominent gentleman now residing in the city of Richmond, Virginia; and the genuine name William Wes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its prominent profile recognizable for miles around and featuring vistas among the most beloved in the Appalachians, North Carolina's Grandfather Mountain is many things to many people: an easily recognized landmark along the Blue Ridge Parkway, a popular tourist destination, a site of annual Highland Games, and an internationally recognized nature preserve. In this definitive book on Grandfather, Randy Johnson guides readers on a journey through the mountain's history, from its geological beginnings millennia ago and the early days of exploration to its role in regional development and eventual establishment as a North Carolina state park. Along the way, he shows how Grandfather has changed, and has been changed by, the people of western North Carolina and beyond. To tell the full natural and human story, Johnson draws not only on historical sources but on his rich personal experience working closely on the mountain alongside Hugh Morton and others. The result is a unique and personal telling of Grandfather's lasting significance. The book includes more than 200 historical and contemporary photographs, maps, and a practical guide to hiking the extensive trails, appreciating key plant and animal species and photographing the natural wonder that is Grandfather.
