Book excerpt: Greater snow geese (Chen caerulescens atlantica) traditionally stopped in marshes along the St. Lawrence estuary in southern Quebec during their autumn migration. Recently, they have started feeding in agricultural fields and have expanded the area used during their stopover, mostly to the southwest (upper St. Lawrence river valley, Richelieu river valley, and the eastern townships). It has also been documented that a certain number of snow geese are passing over Quebec without stopping. Our objective was to describe the current migratory behavior of the geese, following the rapid expansion of their population, and to explain the individual variaton in this behavior. We radiotracked a total of 253 adult female geese during their autumn migration between 1996 and 1999. Depending on the year, 16 to 38% of the geese passed over Quebec and went directly to the U.S. without stopping. We documented a gradual increase in the proportion of geese using the southwest of the province from 1996 t.
