Book Grand Fleet Days Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Grand Fleet Days Illustrated Edition written by Rev. Montague Thomas Hainsselin and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes The First World War At Sea Illustrations Pack with 189 maps, plans, and photos. Although written under anonymously, the writer of the famous quartet of famous First World War sea-reportage novels, was identified as Rev. Montague T. Hainsselin. He was appointed to the chaplaincy of the Royal Navy in 1903, although he had been almost born into the Navy having raised in Plymouth. He served on many ships in his long career, from battlecruisers to the huge superdreadnoughts in the Mediterranean, Home and Channel Fleets. During the First World War he served in the Home Fleet based in Scapa Floe and was present at the only major sea-battle of the war at Jutland. Few men were been appointed so well as the Chaplain to report the inner workings of the Royal Navy from the lowliest stoker in the boiler room to the officers commanding entire behemoths of steel. Observant and witty, Rev. Hainsselin offers a view of the Royal Navy at War that has rarely been surpassed. Reviews of IN THE NORTHERN MISTS “Nothing, so far as one can remember, gives as good an idea as this book does of life in the Royal Navy in time of war.”—World. “Full of intimate touches, and full of good stories of quarter-deck and lower-deck.... The Padre is a man of infinite humour, as all truly religious men are. There is not a line of preaching in his book, an there is many a good yarn, but, for all that, it is a good book, it is a book of manliness and cleanliness and godliness. Read his one little incursion into religion, ‘Strad Cords,’ and you will love him for a practical muscular Christian.”—Daily Express. “The unnamed Padre ... tells us a great deal about the little ways of the Services, the psychology of its members, and the spirit that animates them; and always in a style so entertaining as well as sympathetic that these pages from his note-hook should prove one of the most popular and appreciated of books that the war has directly or indirectly inspired.”—Scotsman.

Book The Navy In Battle Illustrated Edition

Download or read book The Navy In Battle Illustrated Edition written by Arthur Joseph Hungerford Pollen and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contains 10 maps, diagrams and illustrations. Arthur Pollen, was a famous British naval historian and inventor of naval warfare equipment, particularly noted for his computer based fire-control system; as with many scientists on the outside of the Admiralty he met with resistance. The British naval establishment were none too fond of Pollen’s biting magazine articles on their conduct of the war; Pollen wrote extensively on Naval matters during the period of the First World War and also penned this volume entitled “The Navy in Battle”. In keeping with his disestablishment line, he was very critical of the handling of the Navy and covers herein the submarine menace, the battle of the Falkland Islands, the engagement at Helgoland Bight and the Battle of Jutland. Although he saluted the heroism of the Royal Navy on the seas in general he pulled no punches on what he saw as fundamental issues of handling of the war effort, indeed he aimed particular criticism at Admiral Jellicoe and his actions at the battle of Jutland. Refreshingly an unjingoistic work free form many of the prejudices of British naval works on the First World War.

Book Days to Remember The British Empire in the Great War Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Days to Remember The British Empire in the Great War Illustrated Edition written by John Buchan and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2017-06-21 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is never easy to fix upon one cause as the origin of a great war, and the war of 1914 was the outcome of several causes combined. For twenty years there had been growing up in Europe a sense of insecurity; the great Powers had become restless and suspicious of one another . . . (Excerpt) The British Army during World War I fought the largest and most costly war in its long history. Unlike the French and German Armies, its units were made up exclusively of volunteers—as opposed to conscripts—at the beginning of the conflict. Furthermore, the British Army was considerably smaller than its French and German counterparts. Yet the army showed exemplary valour and courage on the battlefield. Buchan and Newbolt bring their expert analysis into their overview of the Great War and the reasons for it. John Buchan (1875-1940) was a Scottish novelist, historian and also served as Canada's Governor General. With the outbreak of the First World War, Buchan worked as a correspondent in France for The Times. Sir Henry John Newbolt (1862–1938) was an English poet, novelist and historian. He also had a very powerful role as a government adviser. He is perhaps best remembered for his poems "Vitaï Lampada" and "Drake's Drum".

Book The Life of Nelson Vol I Illustrated Edition

Download or read book The Life of Nelson Vol I Illustrated Edition written by Admiral Alfred Thayer Mahan and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2011-02-18 with total page 563 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Admiral Mahan, passed away in 1914, his ideas and thoughts lived on in his writings, which spanned the naval strategy of his own times and the lessons learnt from history. They are still read at the modern naval academies and the ideas permeate the teachings at Annapolis. A flag officer in the U.S. Navy who fought during the American civil war for the Union forces, his works have gained a fame that makes him the foremost of the naval historians of the late 1800’s. Of enduring interest is his two volume history of Horatio Nelson, the hero of the Royal Navy and the battle of Trafalgar. An epic and tragic figure in age that abounds with them, the victor of Trafalgar who never lived past that day to see his fame endure is a favourite for biographies however few are as balanced and detailed as Mahan’s. The first volume covers Nelson’s early years his entrance to the Royal Navy and the patronage that enabled him to progress up the ranks swiftly. His decisive action at the battle of Cape St Vincent is covered in detail. Nelson’s thirst for action and glory is brought out in stark relief with his youthful naivety, and his deeply questionable actions in Naples are discussed in depth. The book ends after the brilliant victory at the battle of the Nile, which in itself would have been enough to be a crowning glory, leaving Napoleon and his expeditionary force stranded in Egypt.
