Book Manual of Standardization in the Romance Languages

Download or read book Manual of Standardization in the Romance Languages written by Franz Lebsanft and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language standardization is an ongoing process based on the notions of linguistic correctness and models. This manual contains thirty-six chapters that deal with the theories of linguistic norms and give a comprehensive up-to-date description and analysis of the standardization processes in the Romance languages. The first section presents the essential approaches to the concept of linguistic norm ranging from antiquity to the present, and includes individual chapters on the notion of linguistic norms and correctness in classical grammar and rhetoric, in the Prague School, in the linguistic theory of Eugenio Coseriu, in sociolinguistics as well as in pragmatics, cognitive and discourse linguistics. The second section focuses on the application of these notions with respect to the Romance languages. It examines in detail the normative grammar and the normative dictionary as the reference tools for language codification and modernization of those languages that have a long and well-established written tradition, i.e. Romanian, Italian, French, Catalan, Spanish, and Portuguese. Furthermore, the volume offers a discussion of the key issues regarding the standardization of the ‘minor’ Romance languages as well as Creoles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook comprises an in-depth presentation of the state of the art in word-formation. The five volumes contain 207 articles written by leading international scholars. The XVI chapters of the handbook provide the reader, in both general articles and individual studies, with a wide variety of perspectives: word-formation as a linguistic discipline (history of science, theoretical concepts), units and processes in word-formation, rules and restrictions, semantics and pragmatics, foreign word-formation, language planning and purism, historical word-formation, word-formation in language acquisition and aphasia, word-formation and language use, tools in word-formation research. The final chapter comprises 74 portraits of word-formation in the individual languages of Europe and offers an innovative perspective. These portraits afford the first overview of this kind and will prove useful for future typological research. This handbook will provide an essential reference for both advanced students and researchers in word-formation and related fields within linguistics.

Book The Grammatical Realization of Polarity Contrast

Download or read book The Grammatical Realization of Polarity Contrast written by Christine Dimroth and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2018-11-15 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The polarity of a sentence is crucial for its meaning. It is thus hardly surprising that languages have developed devices to highlight this meaning component and to contrast statements with negative and positive polarity in discourse. Research on this issue has started from languages like German and Dutch, where prosody and assertive particles are systematically associated with polarity contrast. Recently, the grammatical realization of polarity contrast has been at the center of investigations in a range of other languages as well. Core questions concern the formal repertoire and the exact meaning contribution of the relevant devices, the kind of contrast they evoke, and their relation to information structure and sentence mood. This volume brings together researchers from a theoretical, an empirical, and a typological orientation and enhances our understanding of polarity with the help of in-depth analyses and cross-linguistic comparisons dealing with the syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and/or prosodic aspects of the phenomenon.

Book The Equilibrium of Human Syntax

Download or read book The Equilibrium of Human Syntax written by Andrea Moro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assembles a collection of papers in two different domains: formal syntax and neurolinguistics. Here Moro provides evidence that the two fields are becoming more and more interconnected and that the new fascinating empirical questions and results in the latter field cannot be obtained without the theoretical base provided by the former. The book is organized in two parts: Part 1 focuses on theoretical and empirical issues in a comparative perspective (including the nature of syntactic movement, the theory of locality and a far reaching and influential theory of copular sentences). Part 2 provides the original sources of some innovative and pioneering experiments based on neuroimaging techniques (focusing on the biological nature of recursion and the interpretation of negative sentences). Moro concludes with an assessment of the impact of these perspectives on the theory of the evolution of language. The leading and pervasive idea unifying all the arguments developed here is the role of symmetry (breaking) in syntax and in the relationship between language and the human brain.

Book The Raising of Predicates

Download or read book The Raising of Predicates written by Andrea Moro and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-09 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the basic premises of the theory of syntax is that clause structures can be minimally identified as containing a verb phrase, playing the role of predicate, and a noun phrase, playing the role of subject. In this study Andrea Moro identifies a new category of copular sentences, namely inverse copular sentences, where the predicative noun phrase occupies the position which is canonically reserved for subjects. In the process, he sheds new light on such classical issues as the distribution and nature of expletives, locality theory and cliticization phenomena.

Book The Routledge Introduction to Italian Linguistics

Download or read book The Routledge Introduction to Italian Linguistics written by Cinzia Russi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-03-20 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Routledge Introduction to Italian Linguistics offers a systematic and comprehensive overview of the linguistic structure of the Italian language, including phonetics and phonology, morphology and morphosyntax, syntax, semantics, and sociolinguistics. The manual includes a historical sketch of the Italian language, which outlines the central phases of its emergence and process of standardization. Written in clear, concise language and taking a descriptive, theory-neutral approach, this is the ideal companion for advanced students of the Italian language and those studying Italian and Romance linguistics. After sketching the most important phases of the process of standardization of Italian and introducing the main varieties of Italian as classified from a social and geographical perspective, this introductory text addresses the core topics of Italian linguistics as pertaining to the sound system and word and sentence structure. The text adopts a descriptive approach and requires no previous knowledge of linguistics since technical terms are carefully explained and illustrated by numerous examples. Thus, it can serve as a reference tool for instructors of Italian and anyone interested in advancing their knowledge of the Italian language or familiarizing themselves with Italian linguistics.

Book The Rhaeto Romance Languages

Download or read book The Rhaeto Romance Languages written by Paola Beninca and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-12-20 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rhaeto-Romance languages have been known as such to the linguistic community since the pioneering studies of Ascoli and Gartner over a century ago. There has never been a community of RR speakers based on a common history or polity and the various dialects are mutually unintelligible, but a unity, based on a number of common features, has been advanced. This book is the first general description of the Rhaeto-Romance languages to be written in English. It provides a critical examination of the phonology, morphology, lexicon, and syntax of the modern Rhaeto-Romance dialects within the broader perspective of Romance comparative linguistics.

Book Formalising Natural Languages with Nooj 2014

Download or read book Formalising Natural Languages with Nooj 2014 written by Mario Monteleone and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-13 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is composed of 22 peer-reviewed contributions selected from among the 52 presentations submitted for the 2014 International NooJ Conference held at the University of Sassari, Italy. NooJ is a linguistic development environment that allows linguists to formalize a wide range of linguistic phenomena, and then test, adapt, share and accumulate each elementary description so as to build linguistic “modules”, that is, structured libraries of linguistic resources. NooJ is also used as a corpus processor that can launch sophisticated queries over large corpora of texts, in order to produce various results, including concordances, statistical analyses, information extraction, and automatic translation. NooJ is used in many research centers all over the world, and linguistic modules are available for more than 20 languages. NooJ is also used by a growing number of software companies to develop various Natural Language Processing applications. Johanna Monti is Associate Professor at the University of Sassari, Italy, where she teaches Translation Studies, Computational Linguistics, and Machine-Translation and Computer-Aided Translation. She has acted as a member of the scientific committees of various renowned international conferences on Natural Language Processing, and as external evaluator for the Italian Ministry for Education, Universities and Research (MIUR) and the Horizon 2020 programme.

Book Focus on Additivity

Download or read book Focus on Additivity written by Anna-Maria De Cesare Greenwald and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2017-08-24 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume is centered on the notional domain of additivity. Many linguistic phenomena are based on additivity (i.e. are incremental) and additive relations are a mechanism that underlies a wide array of text types. Specifically, the present volume is centered on the class of function words which have been labeled, among many others, Additive Focusing Modifiers (FMs). The chapters gathered in this volume deal with the syntactic, prosodic and pragmatic properties of Additive FMs and new lines of research on these items are pursued, including (i) the historical development of Additive FMs and the use of these forms in older stages of the European languages; (ii) the pragmatic and sociolinguistic properties of Additive FMs, in particular of the functions they play in discourse and their distribution in different language varieties; (iii) the processing of Additive FMs by adults, in particular by relying on reading experiments involving eye tracking and self-paced reading; (iv) the use of Additive FMs in language contact situations and (v) the acquisition of Additive FMs by different learner groups.
