Learning grammar in context is more important as a language is learned for communication purposes. This book contains twenty-seven units. Each unit tackles a particular grammar structure. Not all grammar structures are handled. Based on the author’s teaching experience, the structures under discussion were deemed more important than others. They were selected, responding to students’ needs (students as second language learners) suiting the teaching to their needs. Those grammar structures are contextualized in self-created dialogues and examples bank (different sentences or passages from other scholars’ works). Each unit is subdivided into different activities. Some units have more activities than others, depending on their weight. But no unit counts less than three activities. The first common activity is about reading self-created dialogues to learn about how a given grammar structure is used in context. The second common activity is about perusing different sentences and passages from other scholars’ publications. The example banks serve as a proof to the reader that it is not only the writer who used the structures in context, but also many other researchers. It also ensures the reader that there is no difference between the way the writer uses the structures and other scholars. Furthermore, the example banks motivate students to learn English alongside with other subjects, bearing in mind that they cannot fully grasp the subjects they are doing in English without mastering general English. The last common activity is about using the same structure in the reader’s own texts. After reading through writer’s dialogues, and then perusing examples bank to see how other scholars used a given grammar structure, the reader can produce his/her own texts to check her/his understanding of the structure under discussion.

Book excerpt: This book offers the first detailed grammatical description of Paunaka, an Arawakan language spoken (in 2023) by eight people in the Chiquitania region in the lowlands of Eastern Bolivia. The grammar builds on material collected during several fieldwork trips between 2009 and 2020 by the team of the Paunaka Documentation Project, which was funded by the ELDP from 2011–2013. This material includes roughly 120 hours of audio and video recordings, which have been archived at ELAR. In 2022, the dissertation on which this book is based received the annual Research Award at the Europa-Universität Flensburg. The grammar provides a description of the phonology, morphology, and syntax of Paunaka, including numerous comparative remarks to closely related languages. It includes over 1500 examples, most of them accompanied by a brief description of their original linguistic or extralinguistic context.

Book excerpt: The linguistic typology of motion event encoding is one of the central topics in Cognitive Linguistics. A vast body of typological, contrastive, and psycholinguistic research has shown the potential, but also the limitations of the original distinction between verb-framed and satellite-framed languages. This volume contains ten original papers focusing specifically on the variation and change of motion event encoding in individual languages and language families. The authors show that some of the central claims about motion event encoding need careful re-examination and reformulation and that individual languages and language families are more variable across space and time than even a refined typology could neatly capture at this time. The volume thus contributes to a more detailed and fine-grained foundation for the investigation of conceptual causes and consequences of different motion-event encoding strategies.

This book addresses the question of typological overlap from the perspective of a single language. In Lowland Chontal of Oaxaca, a language of southern Mexico, change events are expressed with three types of predicates, and each predicate type corresponds to a different language type in the well-known typology of lexicalization patterns established by Talmy and elaborated by others. O'Connor evaluates the predictive powers of the typology by examining the consequences of each predicate type in a variety of contexts, using data from narrative discourse, stimulus response, and elicitation. This is the first detailed look at the lexical and grammatical resources of the verbal system in Chontal and their relation to semantics of change. The analysis of how and why Chontal speakers choose among these verbal resources to achieve particular communicative and social goals serves both as a documentation of an endangered language and a theoretical contribution towards a typology of language use.
