Download or read book The Semantics of Determiners RLE Linguistics B Grammar written by Johan Van Der Auwera and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of linguistic and philosophical papers dealing with the semantic problems of determiners. The language under investigation is mostly English, although a few papers deal with French and German, and, to a lesser extent, with Dutch, Polish, Russian and Hebrew. The majority of the contributions focus on the semantics of the definite and indefinite articles, leading into discussions of anaphoricness, specificness, opacity and transparency, referentiality and attributiveness and genericness. The relation of the determiners to other parts of grammar, in particular relativisation and predication, is also investigated. Some attention is also given to quantifiers. In the spirit of pluralism, there is no single paradigm unifying all the papers, rather, the volume reflects elements of the Extended Standard Theory, Generative Semantics, Montague Grammar, (Gricean) Pragmatics and Speech Act Theory.

Entries define, discuss and exemplify the whole range of connecting language in French. 2000 examples add further clarity and are chosen from a wide range of registers and mainly contemporary prose.
Download or read book A la Francaise written by Marie Gontier Geno and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1992 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A la Francaise is designed to help English speakers to overcome numerous and common difficulties in their study of French. An impressive collection of varied mistakes made by students at both intermediate and advanced levels has shown that certain problems arise with great frequency and tenacity; these form the raison d'etre of the book. Since the errors usually stem from the English thought process, all the entries are in that language. Grammatical and lexical difficulties are presented together, alphabetically, for quick and easy reference. The explanations, in French, are as concise as possible; they are often illustrated by tables. This book is neither a grammar text nor a dictionary. Each entry deals only with the difficulty at hand. Grammatical entries emphasize essentially the differences between English and French. Lexical entries are limited to the problem created in translation. q Identifies common mistakes in French q Targets the intermediate or advanced student of French q Presents both grammar and vocabulary entries in alphabetical order q Supplements the composition or conversation class q Serves as a correcting manual and general reference
Download or read book Expressing the Same by the Different written by Igor Dreer and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers an alternative, sign-oriented analysis of the distribution of the French Indicative and Subjunctive. It rejects both government and functions, attributed to both moods, and shows that the distribution of the Indicative and the Subjunctive is motivated by their invariant meanings. The volume illustrates the close interaction between the Indicative and the Subjunctive, as linguistic signs, and signs of other grammatical systems, contextually associated with the invariant meanings of both moods. Special consideration is given to the use of the Indicative and the Subjunctive in texts of different styles and genres. This volume also deals with the diachronic disfavoring of the Subjunctive and especially of the Imperfect Subjunctive that occurred from Old French to Contemporary French. It is argued that this disfavoring was motivated by the narrowing of the invariant meaning of the Contemporary French Subjunctive. All hypotheses are supported by contextualized examples and frequency counts.

This book was released on 2020-01-20 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language standardization is an ongoing process based on the notions of linguistic correctness and models. This manual contains thirty-six chapters that deal with the theories of linguistic norms and give a comprehensive up-to-date description and analysis of the standardization processes in the Romance languages. The first section presents the essential approaches to the concept of linguistic norm ranging from antiquity to the present, and includes individual chapters on the notion of linguistic norms and correctness in classical grammar and rhetoric, in the Prague School, in the linguistic theory of Eugenio Coseriu, in sociolinguistics as well as in pragmatics, cognitive and discourse linguistics. The second section focuses on the application of these notions with respect to the Romance languages. It examines in detail the normative grammar and the normative dictionary as the reference tools for language codification and modernization of those languages that have a long and well-established written tradition, i.e. Romanian, Italian, French, Catalan, Spanish, and Portuguese. Furthermore, the volume offers a discussion of the key issues regarding the standardization of the ‘minor’ Romance languages as well as Creoles.
