GENRE IN A CHANGING WORLD provides a wide-ranging sampler of the remarkable variety of current work. The twenty-four chapters in this volume, reflecting the work of scholars in Europe, Australasia, and North and South America, were selected from the over 400 presentations at SIGET IV (the Fourth International Symposium on Genre Studies) held on the campus of UNISUL in Tubarão, Santa Catarina, Brazil in August 2007—the largest gathering on genre to that date. The chapters also represent a wide variety of approaches, including rhetoric, Systemic Functional Linguistics, media and critical cultural studies, sociology, phenomenology, enunciation theory, the Geneva school of educational sequences, cognitive psychology, relevance theory, sociocultural psychology, activity theory, Gestalt psychology, and schema theory. Sections are devoted to theoretical issues, studies of genres in the professions, studies of genre and media, teaching and learning genre, and writing across the curriculum. The broad selection of material in this volume displays the full range of contemporary genre studies and sets the ground for a next generation of work.

Book Teaching Translation

Download or read book Teaching Translation written by LAWRENCE VENUTI and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past half century, translation studies has emerged decisively as an academic field around the world, and in recent years the number of academic institutions offering instruction in translation has risen along with an increased demand for translators, interpreters and translator trainers. Teaching Translation is the most comprehensive and theoretically informed overview of current translation teaching. Contributions from leading figures in translation studies are preceded by a substantial introduction by Lawrence Venuti, in which he presents a view of translation as the ultimate humanistic task – an interpretive act that varies the form, meaning, and effect of the source text. 26 incisive chapters are divided into four parts, covering: certificate and degree programs teaching translation practices studying translation theory, history, and practice surveys of translation pedagogies and key textbooks The chapters describe long-standing programs and courses in the US, Canada, the UK, and Spain, and each one presents an exemplary model for teaching that can be replicated or adapted in other institutions. Each contributor responds to fundamental questions at the core of any translation course – for example, how is translation defined? What qualifies students for admission to the course? What impact does the institutional site have upon the course or pedagogy? Teaching Translation will be relevant for all those working and teaching in the areas of translation and translation studies. Additional resources for Translation and Interpreting Studies are available on the Routledge Translation Studies Portal.

Book The Poems and Aphorisms of Maurice Chapelan

Download or read book The Poems and Aphorisms of Maurice Chapelan written by Mary Munro-Hill and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-11-24 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, prefaced by the French novelist and essayist, Jeanne Cressanges, focuses on Maurice Chapelan’s poetry and aphorisms, which are an integral part of his œuvre. His poems encompass the whole essence of the man, his very heart and soul, whereas the aphorisms express his philosophy. Chapelan is a master of the prose poem—le poème en prose—a creator of concise poetic pieces full of rich imagery and musicality. His aphorisms, too, are often poetic, and most of his work, in every genre, contains verse and philosophy. Above all, Chapelan was a moralist and a fine practitioner of l’humour noir, which he defines as la conjuration de l’horreur par le rire. He called himself un humoraliste. Although Maurice Chapelan died in 1992 most of his books are still in print and he is remembered with affection, admiration and gratitude by those who used to relish his witty Divertissements grammaticaux in Le Figaro littéraire. He had been resident chroniqueur du langage at Le Figaro since 1961, his earlier articles appearing under the more sober heading, Usage et grammaire. He continued to write his chroniques until shortly before his death.

This book was released on 2019-03-05 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers tested practices for successful design, implementation and teaching of blended and online courses in French and cultural studies. Founded on recent research, it promotes a contextualized, accessible environment through increased online access to authentic materials, face-to-face creative interaction, and embedded formative assessment. Each chapter focuses on major pedagogical issues associated with teaching blended and online courses, including instructional design, teaching tools adapted to a media-rich learning environment, and formative evaluation techniques through rubric-based assessment, self-evaluation and peer interaction. The book will appeal to humanities faculty and teaching assistants who plan the transition from the traditional classroom environment to blended and online teaching. The examples provided throughout clearly indicate that a good combination of proven pedagogies and technology-supported strategies will greatly enhance the quality of students’ learning through the acquisition of advanced linguistic skills and cultural competence in preparation for bilingual career certification, work and study abroad, and will lead to a deeper understanding of blended and online teaching and the future use of technology in higher education. Designed for use in small and large undergraduate courses in colleges and universities around the world, the book will be a major asset to any library collection looking to expand its humanities and education collections and reference sections.
