Sa derivation de ille, dont on a con serve tantot la premiere tantot la seconde syllabe, est evidente. Il semble que la premiere syllabe du pronom latin, en sa qualite d'accentuee, eut du avoir la preference pour la formation de cette nouvelle partie du discours, mais la seconde avait pour elle de contenir la flexion, et ainsi on les employa toutes deux. Il en fut de meme du pronom ipse (is - psa), qui sert d'article dans quelques dialectes; de ses deux syllabes, la seconde seule, l'atone, echappa a la destruction. On peut rappeler aussi l'abreviation latine 'ste de is-te. Cependant l'article se presente encore ca et la en roman avec ses deux )syllabes.
