The approach is descriptive rather than theoretical, and is based on the use of distinctive features analogous to the ones used in phonology, which entails a radical reworking of the traditional classification. The first part presents some basic notions such as the use of distinctive features and the role of word classes in grammar; classification by prototypes; and the use of world knowledge as a resource to assign thematic relations to constituents in the sentence. In the second part, some descriptive problems are examined, namely the classification of verbs according to valency; connectives, adverbs, and the internal constituents of the NP; and the classification of units larger than words. This book will be of use as a guide for linguists working on the description of natural languages, as well as a resource for students on courses in linguistic theory and description.

Por isto não há como olvidar o uso (e nenhum gramático de respeito o faz). Assim, não cabe mais falarmos em regras, mas em conselhos. Uma gramática ideal da língua portuguesa não deve ser nem normativa nem descritiva, mas conselheira. Por esta razão, proponho não o fim, mas a atenuação do debate bipolarizado gramática normativa x gramática descritiva, e a elaboração de uma gramática que se preocupe em ensinar o estudante a escrever e a falar aquilo que ele queira realmente falar, com o máximo de perfeição, precisão, estilo e profundidade possível. Uma gramática que não queira ensinar o que já se sabe, mas possibilite ao aluno e à humanidade a conquista de uma performance maior e melhor na expressão de suas ideias e mensagens, valendo-se do ensino na norma padrão culta e da norma padrão formal, já que a variedade coloquial já é de amplo domínio da maioria das pessoas. Esta gramática, através de conselhos, isto é, da recomendação (jamais da proibição!) de maneiras mais otimizadas de se expressar em ambientes internos e externos ao texto, exporá ao estudante as riquezas e possibilidades do léxico, da morfologia, da sintaxe e da semântica de língua portuguesa, desvelando as entranhas lógicas e líricas da língua, seus matizes. Por isto, tal gramática proponho ser chamada de Arte Gramatical da Língua Portuguesa, pois terá como foco capacitar o leitor no uso das modalidades culta e padrão da língua, não em todos os momentos, mas naqueles em que o falante/escritor quiser fazer a língua dizer, com perfeição, estilo e profundidade, o que se quer dizer. E, ao fazer isto, o mesmo indivíduo não cometerá um ato de soberba altivez e excludente preconceito para com seus interlocutores/leitores se estes, assim como aquele, também conhecerem a Arte Gramatical, ou seja, a própria Gramática. Não concordo, portanto com BAGNO que devamos afrouxar o ensino das normas gramaticais e adotar o ensino lastrado na língua oral. Concordo com NMA quando diz que a causa-máter dos nossos problemas era o número insuficiente de escolas. Mas, hoje, este problema já está quase totalmente resolvido, e, não obstante, o conhecimento gramatical e o desempenho expressivo (leitura e composição) dos nossos alunos continua pífio. A formação dos professores precisa melhorar. Condenar a norma ou idolatrá-la são posições extremadas que não trazem benefício. Ficar em quaisquer destes dois extremos não é positivo para o ensino-aprendizagem de língua portuguesa. Assim, uma flexibilização aqui e ali pode ajudar muito, e a que vejo como sumamente importante é, como disse, a dissolução do embate entre os gramáticos conservadores e os progressistas e a adoção de uma gramática que construa e recomende ao invés de destruir e proibir.

It analyzes the relation between grammatically defined roles such as agent and patient (semantic roles), and elaborate thematic relations (ETRs) actually accessible to language users. It shows that many phenomena previously analyzed as grammatical can be described in a more simple and convenient way by postulating direct connection between syntactic complements and cognitive relations present in the schema evoked by the verb. The volume focuses on a topic which has been the object of much discussion in the recent literature, namely the definition and delimitation of semantic roles, proposing new solutions to some important theoretical and practical problems in the description of the lexicogrammatical structure of languages, and in particular of verb valency. It shows that in many cases a direct relation can be established between morphosyntactic units and functions, on one hand, and ETRs, on the other, without the intermediation of grammatically defined semantic roles. This makes it possible to analyze thematic relations that have been traditionally problematic, such as the patient, in a linguistically simple and cognitively well-motivated way. Thematic Relations – A Study in the Grammar-Cognition Interface will be a useful resource for practicing linguists working on the analysis of natural languages, in particular on verb valency; verb subcategorization and thematic structure; semantic (thematic) roles, their definition and syntactic coding; the relation between grammatical structure and cognitive schemata (frames); and the structure of the lexicon.
