Book Grain Boundary Segregation in Metals

Download or read book Grain Boundary Segregation in Metals written by Pavel Lejcek and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grain boundaries are important structural components of polycrystalline materials used in the vast majority of technical applications. Because grain boundaries form a continuous network throughout such materials, their properties may limit their practical use. One of the serious phenomena which evoke these limitations is the grain boundary segregation of impurities. It results in the loss of grain boundary cohesion and consequently, in brittle fracture of the materials. The current book deals with fundamentals of grain boundary segregation in metallic materials and its relationship to the grain boundary structure, classification and other materials properties.

Book Grain Boundary Segregation of Impurities in Metals and Intergranular Brittle Fracture

Download or read book Grain Boundary Segregation of Impurities in Metals and Intergranular Brittle Fracture written by John R Low (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report discusses two investigations of temper embrittlement in low alloy quenched and tempered steel. Part I deals with additive effects of phosphorus and antimony as embrittling impurities in this type of grain-boundary embrittlement. Part II describes efforts to develop a method of determining the degree of segregation of alloys and impurities to grain-boundaries during temper embrittlement. The method under study involves neutron activation analysis of the etchant from etched intergranular fracture surfaces. (Author).

Book Grain Boundary Segregation and Intergranular Failure

Download or read book Grain Boundary Segregation and Intergranular Failure written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trace elements and impurities often segregate strongly to grain boundaries in metals and alloys. Concentrations of these elements at grain boundaries are often 103 to 105 times as great as their overall concentration in the alloy. Because of such segregation, certain trace elements can exert a disproportionate influence on material properties. One frequently observed consequence of trace element segregation to grain boundaries is the occurrence of grain boundary failure and low ductility. Less well known are incidences of improved ductility and inhibition of grain boundary fracture resulting from trace element segregation to grain boundaries in certain systems. An overview of trace element segregation and intergranular failure in a variety of alloy systems as well as preliminary results from studies on Al 3% Li will be presented.

Book Atom Probe Field Ion Microscopy

Download or read book Atom Probe Field Ion Microscopy written by Michael Kenneth Miller and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a definitive account of the theory, practice and applications of atom probe field ion microscopy (APFIM). The APFIM technique provides a unique method for observing and chemically identifying single atoms on solid surfaces. Recent advances in the method, which are largely dueto the present authors, now permit the atomic-scale chemistry of a solid specimen to be recognised in three dimensions. As a result of these developments, new and exciting applications are rapidly emerging in the field of material science, surface science, and catalysis. The book is a state-of-theart account of this important field, and is intended for a graduate-level readership.
