Book excerpt: A desperate mother spirits away her infant son, seemingly drawn (chased, perhaps?) to the small English village of Thornyhill. She ends up on the doorstep of old Bartlemy, a curious man who has lived on the forested land for as long as anyone can remember–and who comes to believe that the child is destined for great things. . . . While growing up under Bartlemy’s protective eye, Nathan Ward senses something else watching him, a shift of shadows in the surrounding Darkwood. Then pieces of his dreams begin to come to life. A man he saved from the ocean washes ashore on the television news. A greenish stone cup set with jewels that has haunted his visions sounds eerily like one lost by the Thorn family centuries ago–a cup that has recently made its way back into the hands of the village’s last living ancestor. Yet when Nathan learns the chalice may have come from another world, a land with bloodstained moons and a toxic sun, he knows he is destined to play a part in something beyond his most vivid imagination. But why is the cup here, and what could it possibly want with a teenage boy and a sleepy town of villagers full of tall tales? With the help of his best friend, Hazel, Nathan must figure out why he’s been chosen–and for what purpose. Even if it means traveling deeper each night into dreams, into lands, into legends that both terrify and mesmerize him. The Greenthorn Grail is the first novel of a thrilling new trilogy, tracing a boy’s journey–a quest rife with magic, wonder, and forces as dark as midnight.

All facets of human culture across the globe are under tremendous pressure. In the US, access to the longevity treatment is the central issue in a bitter Presidential race that is tearing the nation apart. Already high unemployment is exploding as those who have become young again swell the workforce. Many of the rich and powerful are aligned behind a candidate who opposes any further distribution of the longevity gene in the name of protecting the public from a dangerous untested technology. But these same forces are at work behind the scenes to ensure they have access to the longevity treatment. If they are successful in suppressing this technology and keeping it exclusively for the elite, the split between the haves and the have-nots will not be only about wealth and power, but life itself.

Book The Conte Du Graal Cycle

Download or read book The Conte Du Graal Cycle written by Thomas Hinton and published by DS Brewer. This book was released on 2012 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new study of the continuations to Chrétien's Conte du Graal shows their crucial influence on the development of Arthurian literature. Chrétien de Troyes's late twelfth-century Conte du Graal has inspired writers and scholars from the moment of its composition to the present day. The challenge represented by its unfinished state was quickly taken up, and over the next fifty years the romance was supplemented by a number of continuations and prologues, which eventually came to dwarf Chrétien's text. In one of the first studies to treat the Conte du Graal and its continuations as a unified work, Thomas Hinton considers the whole corpus as a narrative cycle. Through a combination of close textual readings and manuscript analysis, the author argues that the unity of the narrative depends on a balanced tension between centripetal and centrifugal dynamics. He traces how the authors, scribes and illuminators of the cycle worked to produce coherence, even as they contended with potentially disruptive forces: multiple authorship, differences of intention, and changes in the relation between text, audience and book. Finally, he tackles the long-held orthodoxy that places the Perceval Continuations on the margins of literary history. Widening the scope of enquiry to consider the corpus's influence on thirteenth-century verse romances, this study re-situates the Conte du Graal cycle as a vital element in the evolution of Arthurian literature. Thomas Hinton isJunior Research Fellow in Modern Languages at Jesus College, Oxford.

Book Would Somebody Please Send Me to My Room

Download or read book Would Somebody Please Send Me to My Room written by Bob Schwartz and published by Glenbridge Publishing Ltd.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob Schwartz reminds us of the necessity, no matter how harried or confusing things are, to appreciate the humor in the day-to-day nature of family life. Bob gives parents a reason to laugh as he navigates the unexpected twists and turns of parenthood every mom and dad has experienced - such as that feeling of panic when you hear the toilet being flushed and immediately followed by your child's less than reassuring yell of "Uh-oh!" Or the admonition to your five-year-old of, "No, you can't have the leftover cotton candy for breakfast, even if you do pour milk over it." Perhaps parents also need the reassurance that Bob offers. In looking back on his initial years of parenthood, Bob writes, "There was one word that sprang to mind - Naive. That's French for 'Buddy, you don't even have a clue.'" If you, like Bob, are entirely clueless at the beginning of parenthood, there's hope for the future. For while imparting crucial information to his children like "the shower curtain goes inside the bathtub; don't put marbles into the garbage disposal, and it's not a great idea to see how many peas you can stick up your nose," Bob did learn things like how to navigate the challenging world of school carpool pickup without infuriating the power hungry fifth grade Safety Patrol. And you, like Bob, might also make some headway with the linguistic parental challenge of cracking the grunt communication code of teenagers. Bob Schwartz tackles these problems and more. He tells us that the purpose of his essays is to have us embrace the humor of parenthood and the fun of family life. "Let laughter be the fuel for this thrilling, and yes indeed, sometimes pandemonium-producing journey." Book jacket.
