Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of The Bookman’s Tale comes a new novel about an obsessive bibliophile’s quest through time to discover a missing manuscript, the unknown history of an English Cathedral, and the secret of the Holy Grail Arthur Prescott is happiest when surrounded by the ancient books and manuscripts of the Barchester Cathedral library. Increasingly, he feels like a fish out of water among the concrete buildings of the University of Barchester, where he works as an English professor. His one respite is his time spent nestled in the library, nurturing his secret obsession with the Holy Grail and researching his perennially unfinished guidebook to the medieval cathedral. But when a beautiful young American named Bethany Davis arrives in Barchester charged with the task of digitizing the library’s manuscripts, Arthur’s tranquility is broken. Appalled by the threat modern technology poses to the library he loves, he sets out to thwart Bethany, only to find in her a kindred spirit with a similar love for knowledge and books—and a fellow Grail fanatic. Bethany soon joins Arthur in a quest to find the lost Book of Ewolda, the ancient manuscript telling the story of the cathedral’s founder. And when the future of the cathedral itself is threatened, Arthur and Bethany’s search takes on grave importance, leading the pair to discover secrets about the cathedral, about the Grail, and about themselves. “Lovett's unique work combines literary and historical research with classic elements of cozy mysteries, classic love stories, and exciting adventure tales to create a true genre-blending masterpiece. At once funny, heartwarming, and suspenseful, The Lost Book of the Grail has something for every kind of reader, and every kind of book-lover, alike.” —Bustle

Book The Holy Grail

    Book Details:
  • Author : Justin E. Griffin
  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2012-10-27
  • ISBN : 0786450312
  • Pages : 168 pages

Download or read book The Holy Grail written by Justin E. Griffin and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2012-10-27 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence of the Holy Grail has long been debated, and many of these debates focus on the intellectualized or psychological aspects of it. This work explores the events that gave rise to the legend of the Holy Grail and pays special attention to the texts that form the body of the legend, as well as historical facts about the life of Christ, the Crusades, and the fall from grace of the Knights Templar. The book examines the legitimacy of the claims made by several present-day believers and also introduces a new theory of multiple grails (and the evidence supporting this theory), which, the author believes, answers many of the otherwise unanswered questions surrounding the Holy Grail.

Book Holy Grail and Camelot

Download or read book Holy Grail and Camelot written by Robert Rae and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2016-06-20 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seldom has it happened that you come across a book like this with the potential to rewrite history and content to put an end to centuries of speculation regarding the composition and resting place of the Holy Grail. This book could do just that. Camelot Palace, Isle of Avalon, King Arthur, Knights of the Round Table and so much more feature in this book, to be revealed in an entertaining fashion. The Holy Grail is not what people think it is, it is even more spectacular than imagined when seen in all its glory. Likewise, Camelot has an aura about it to give a magical presence. This is a most fascinating story confirming that the Grail Romances are not myths, but detailed excerpts from history. A revolutionary concept of Earth Sciences is applied to determine where Camelot sat and to give other astonishing conclusions regarding related sites. Such a technique could be further used on other historic mysteries to locate treasures.

Book Manifesting Spirits

Download or read book Manifesting Spirits written by Jack Hunter and published by Aeon Books. This book was released on 2020-12-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manifesting Spirits is an exploration of contemporary trance and physical mediumship at a private spiritualist home-circle called the Bristol Spirit Lodge. Located in a garden on the outskirts of Bristol, the Lodge is a wooden shed specially constructed for the purposes of mediumship development and spirit communication. Through a combination of ethnographic observations in seances - including his own experiences of mediumship development - and interviews with spirits and their mediums, Hunter delves into a sub-urban world of trance states, ectoplasm, spirit lights and discarnate entities. Issues relating to altered states of consciousness, personhood, performance and the efficacy of ritual are examined in order to make sense of the processes by which spirits become manifest in social reality. A large part of Manifesting Spirits is given over to a broader discussion of anthropology's evolving attitudes toward the 'paranormal' as a component of the 'life-worlds' of many people across the globe, and argues for the development of a non-reductive anthropological approach to the paranormal, and mediumship in particular. This emerging framework - referred to as 'ontological flooding' does not attempt to explain away the existence of spirits in terms of functional, cognitive or pathological theories (as most mainstream theorists tend to do), but rather embraces a processual perspective that emphasises complexity and multiple interconnected processes underlying spirit possession performances and experiences.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A humorous travelogue full of conspiracy theorists and loony treasure hunters in south-west France Hugo Soskin, son of best-selling author on Rennes-le-Château Henry Lincoln, has no time for the French Pyrenean village and its mysteries. He is fed up with the whole subject of how a nineteenth-century priest came to be a millionaire overnight and why he built so many bizarre clues into his church and his home. But when he and his wife decide to drive an old camper van to Spain to start a new life, they can't resist a tiny peek en route at the village that enthralls and captivates so many. After agreeing to work on a nearby campsite for a season, Soskin starts to absorb the culture and rhythms of life in south-west France, where working in the shadow of Rennes-le-Château exposes him to loony treasure hunters and conspiracy theorists, all of whom assume he has inside knowledge that could help them crack the mystery and find the hidden gold. If this isn't bad enough, Soskin's father arrives accompanied by a group of fanatical 'Rennies', including the punk rocker 'Rat Scabies', needing his assistance in touring places of interest and wanting to know Soskin’s own theory about the mysteries of Rennes-le-Château: surely he knows more than he is telling? Will he reveal all?

Book excerpt: In this classic Depression-era Texas novel, three wayfaring comrades ask for no pity as they travel the country looking for signs from the Higher Powers - and for whiskey and women. As Eddie, the narrator, muses the Higher Powers had meant us to live like wild free studhorses roaming the face of the earth and gladdening whatever hearts we run across. Finding their way to a camp under a Brazos River bridge, Eddie, Mike and Jimmy survive on windfalls they find, con, or take outright. Their ribald adventures sparkle with humorous philosophy and wry social satire. One can scarcely find a book that is more politically incorrect than Walls Rise Up, writes Judyth Rigler in the foreword, yet the reader . . . finds it easy to laugh at descriptions of shiftless hoboes, alcoholics, loose women, dimwitted giants, liars, thieves and the like. First published in 1939 by Doubleday Doran, this reprint includes a little known, previously unpublished chapter that Perry had intended for a future edition.

Book Sources of the Grail

Download or read book Sources of the Grail written by John Matthews and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 1997 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Still stands the destined Knight, aloof in his passionate patience, His hand over his eyes? Is he doomed to fulfil or fail? Shall he dare the hells and the heavens of the strange illuminations, Initiate at last of the dread mysterious Graal? The editor, John Matthews, tells us that, at the beginning of the twelfth century, the poet Crétien de Troyes composed a poem he called Il Conte del Graal ("The Story of the Grail"). It told the story of a search taken up by a simple young man who was brought up away from the ways of ordinary people. His search was for a mysterious object known as the "Graal," but Crétien left the poem unfinished, dying before he could complete it, thus creating a mystery that has stirred the imagination of countless seekers ever since. The Grail may be almost anything--or it may be something that has no form at all or even exist in our world. The important thing is that it provides an object for personal search, for growth and human development. We are dealing here with high things, with a Mystery that is almost too much for us. But we can learn and grow from studying it and by sharing the adventure of the Quest. Sources of the Grail is the most complete anthology of Grail texts available. Organized into three parts, the first deals with the Celtic sources; the second presents the medieval quest; and part three continues the search and represents some of the most far-reaching and deepest contemporary Grail seekers. Anyone interested in Western spiritual traditions will find this a valuable, thought-provoking resource.
