Book Innovative Polymeric Adsorbents

Download or read book Innovative Polymeric Adsorbents written by Kyoichi Saito and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-05 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the reader with a story-based narrative of discovery and development of radiation-induced graft polymerization. The report presented here accomplishes this by relating the inspiring account of research and development based on long-term collaboration among a professor, an engineer, and an entrepreneur. Their goal, ultimately successful, was to come up with a method for grafting functional polymer chains onto existing trunk polymers. The desired outcome was to produce feasible forms for practical use as adsorbents such as porous hollow-fiber membranes, porous sheets, nonwoven fabrics, and fibers. Adsorbents that specifically and efficiently bind to target ions and molecules are essential for capturing uranium species in seawater and antibody drugs in biological fluids and for removing metal ions from ultrapure water and radioactive cesium ions from contaminated water. This unique volume, with its clearly written text and many illustrative figures and diagrams, demonstrates the advantages of the high-adsorption capacity and rate and the easy handling of new polymeric adsorbents over conventional adsorbents. The dynamic behavior of graft chains as described here is certain to appeal especially to chemists, physicists, and material scientists as well as to other readers with an interest in this valuable subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-migratory active food packaging has the potential to reduce the current food crisis which involves production, quality and safety aspects for consumption. Currently, the food industry is using added preservatives which possibly contain harmful ingredients that will enable food to last longer. Besides that, active packaging like cans or plastic contains wordings on the surface that can migrate into food product over a period of time hence it can be detrimental for the health of consumer. This work aims to prepare a film surface that will be used as packaging with non-migratory antimicrobial properties via gamma radiation grafting. Using a hydrophilic, biocompatible polymer polyethylene glycol diacrylate (PEGDA) as tether molecule. In this study, PEGDA was grafted onto the surface of polypropylene (PP) films which were irradiated using gamma ray with dosages ranging from 10kGy, 15kGy, 20kGy, 25kGy and 30kGy. The concentration for polymer solution is between 1% to 20%. In this study, N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) was used as an antimicrobial agent. It was later immobilized on the PP film surface which hve been grafted with PEGDA by covalent attachment. Grafting was done by dipping the irradiated films in the polymeric solution for two hours in water bath at 70oC while purging with nitrogen. The weight of the films before and after grafting were taken and calculated using degree of grafting. After that, the films were characterized by using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and tensile testing machine. The result showed that a high degree of grafting of more than 10% was achieved when the total radiation dose was lower than 50kGy and the concentration for monomer solution of PEGDA and DMAEMA is kept below 20% within optimum condition.

Book Development of Transparent Plastic Moisture Barriers by Radiation induced Graft Polymerization

Download or read book Development of Transparent Plastic Moisture Barriers by Radiation induced Graft Polymerization written by RADIATION APPLICATIONS INC LONG ISLAND CITY N Y. and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grafting of various monomers to polyethylene for the purpose of improving moisture barrier properties of the polymer has been studied. Monomers employed were, primarily, vinylidene chloride, chlorotrifluoroethylene and bromotrifluoroethylene. Some co-grafting with vinylidene chloride and other monomers was also performed. Grafting was primarily initiated by gamma irradiation; some studies with ultraviolet and chemical initiation were undertaken. The moisture barrier properties were improved by ca. 50% with a high vinylidene chloride graft, with a low vinylidene chloride graft prepared in the presence of chain regulator, and with a vinylidene chloride copolymer graft (all prepared by gamma irradiation). Grafting of chlorotrifluoroethylene could be performed, but the WVTR decreased with increased grafting levels. (Author).
