Book excerpt: The first section of poems are adventures in writing character sketches and caricatures. The portraits are about people with whom I had encounters. Some of the contacts were good and some awful. Then I go into explorations of ideas that were emerging from my subconscious. The pressure would be there trying to get out. I did meditations on solitude and silence. Poetry actually has no rules, nor does art for that matter. The artists make the rules that best suits their creative format. I love poetry because I can take the language apart and put it back together the way it best suits my subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Graffiti is by nature a protean art. In movies, it is often the backdrop used to create a sense of danger and lawlessness. In bathroom stalls, it is the disembodied expression of gossip, lewdness, or confession. In protests, it is a resistive tool, visually displaying the cacophony of disparate voices and interests that come together to make up a movement. Every graffito has an unstable afterlife-fated to be added to, transformed, overlaid, photographed, reinterpreted, or painted over. In short, as this book artfully explains, graffiti makes for messy politics. It brings the unwieldiness of the crises it engages to the fore, giving shape to a conflict's evolving nature. The book closely examines the many permutations of graffiti in conflict zones-moving from the protest graffiti of the Black Lives Matter movement in Ferguson and the Arab Spring in Egypt to the tourist attraction murals on the Israeli Separation Wall, to the street art used for city rebranding and beautification in Detroit and post-Katrina New Orleans. Graffiti has played a crucial role in the revolutionary movements of these locales, but has also been variously appropriated, policed, and exported, ushering in postconflict consumerism, gentrification, militarization, and anaesthetized forgetting. Yet, the book concludes, as protest movements change and adapt in turn, graffiti is also uniquely suited to shapeshift with them, opening up new apertures of resistance with every wave"--

Book Graffiti on the Wall of the Universe

Download or read book Graffiti on the Wall of the Universe written by Gene Doucette and published by Gene Doucette. This book was released on 2023-07-25 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annie Collins emerged from the wreckage of the last invasion of Sorrow Falls with a spaceship in her garden, a loud alien idea in her head, and—because returning to college was out of the question—a lot of free time. What she chose to do with the idea, the spaceship, and all that free time, ended up kickstarting a worldwide technological boom. Now, nine years later, it seems as if not a day passes without the announcement of a new breakthrough in something, be it quantum computing, nuclear energy, neurobiology, or some other esoteric corner of cutting-edge science. The world is in the middle of a revolution of ideas, and the best part? Hardly anyone knows Annie’s involved at all. Yes, everything seems to be working out just great…until the day a new spaceship shows up in Sorrow Falls. This new visitor seems just like the one buried in Annie’s garden: same design, same matte black hull, sitting in the same spot in the same empty field. But there are important differences. For starters, if it’s truly a spaceship at all, it didn’t come from space; it just… appeared. Also, this one didn’t arrive alone. On the same day Sorrow Falls acquired a new spaceship, identical versions manifested in over a dozen locations across the world. All of them just sitting there, not doing anything. At first. Who sent these new ships? Why did they send them? What do they want? Annie—with Ed, and Violet, and the rest of the Sorrow Falls survivors—are going to have to figure that out, and fast. Because this time around, they don’t have three years to work with; they barely have three months before the end of the world. Graffiti on the Wall of the Universe is the exciting follow-up to The Spaceship Next Door and The Frequency of Aliens.

How you’ll feel about their rogue operation and its dénouement depends on who you are and what you stand for, but it could be complicated. All that Mahmoud experiences edits his articles of faith and just might edit some of yours. Book Review 1: "Turkey Shoot is much more than a thriller, more Wajda’s Ashes and Diamonds than 007, elegantly written by someone who clearly knows the history, geography, and political turmoil of the region with great empathy for those victimized by unnecessary wars and heartless policies." -- San Cassimally, playwright and novelist, winner of the Mobil Prize for his play Acquisitive Case Book Review 2: "Experience a cast of colorful characters who band together on a dangerous mission. The dialogue sparkles and the prose thrusts you on an adventure that twists and turns. The bittersweet ending will surprise you." -- Dr. Arnold Kamis, founder, Lexington Writer’s Group Book Review 3: "If invaders destroyed your home, your family, your people—what would you do? Where would you go, how would you get there, what could you take with you, how could you reach out to friends and family or make money? Whom would you trust, or even love? Enough such trauma might drive you to terrorism, might it not? Why not stake out this cell of fed-up international radicals and find out? What they’re planning will kill you." -- Dr. A. Bengola, Professor of English, Newark State Teachers College Book Review 4: "Geoffrey Dutton wraps the reader into a first-person scenario, tracking an outsider as he negotiates a maze of twisty streets and untested persons who claim to be allies. The observations of great detail bring the scenes to life along with the contradictions that lie ahead. Expect the unexpected in this fast-paced thriller." -- Dr. Nick Chrisman, Author, Editor, Geographer, Bellingham WA
