Book Voluntary Associations in the Graeco Roman World

Download or read book Voluntary Associations in the Graeco Roman World written by John S. Kloppenborg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2002-09-11 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based upon a series of detailed case studies of associations such as early synagogues and churches, philosophical schools and pagan mystery cults, this collection addresses the question of what can legitimately be termed a 'voluntary association'. Employing modern sociological concepts, the essays show how the various associations were constituted, the extent of their membership, why people joined them and what they contributed to the social fabric of urban life. For many, those groups were the most significant feature of social life beyond family and work. All of them provided an outlet of religious as well as social commitments. Also included are studies of the way in which early Jewish and Christian groups adopted and adapted the models of private association available to them and how this affected their social status and role. Finally, the situation of women is discussed, as some of the voluntary associations offered them a more significant recognition than they received in society at large.

Book Everyday Writing in the Graeco Roman East

Download or read book Everyday Writing in the Graeco Roman East written by Roger S. Bagnall and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2012-04-23 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This is the most important and original study of literacy and the function of writing in ancient society to have appeared in the last twenty years. In a masterly and detailed survey of evidence from across the ancient Mediterranean world, Bagnall shows how and why 'routine' writing was essential to social and administrative infrastructures from the Hellenistic to the Byzantine periods. Essential reading for anyone interested in understanding the role and function of the written text in human social behaviour." —Alan Bowman, Camden Professor of Ancient History, Oxford University "This richly illustrated and annotated book takes the reader on an extended tour from North Africa to Afghanistan. Bagnall’s theme is the ubiquity and pervasiveness of writing in the long millennium from Alexander to the Arab conquests and beyond. Briskly challenging the currently fashionable low estimates on the extent of literacy and the prevalence of writing in the ancient world, Bagnall surveys and explains what has survived and what has been lost—and why. This is a book both for specialists and for the general reader, sure to inspire admiration and reaction." —James G. Keenan, Professor of Classical Studies, Loyola University Chicago “Bagnall's book is not only a study of everyday writing in the Graeco-Roman East, but also an investigation into how our documentation has been distorted by patterns of conservation and discovery and the choices made by modern editors. The sound reflections of an historian on the sources of history.” —Jean-Luc Fournet, Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes, Paris

Download or read book History of Civilization written by Emil Reich and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-07-28 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Civilization: Graeco-Roman Institutions, From Anti-Evolutionist Points of View; Roman Law, Classical Slavery, Social Conditions BY kind permission of the authorities of the University of Oxford, the following four lectures were delivered at The Schools, on 7th, 14th, zrst February, and 7th March, 1890, respectively. In his endeavour to cover a series of vast problems within the limited space of four lectures the author was obliged to use very concise lan guage, restricting himself to the leading features of his subject. This was all the more difficult since the views advanced deviate most essentially from many current views on the issues discussed, more particularly from the Opinions regarding the rise and growth of the science of Roman Law, graeco-roman slavery, and the applicableness of modern evolutionist theories to the study of social insti tutions. Every line of the present lectures has the virtual or actual tendency to disprove the applicableness of Dar winian concepts to the solution of sociological problems. The author begs to introduce them as a brief expose! Of a portion of his forthcoming work on the history of the main institutions of civilization. He also takes this'op portunity to extend his best thanks to all the Professors, Fellows, Tutors, and Undergraduates of the University of Oxford who honoured him with their attendance.
