Book Delving deeper into the agricultural transformation and youth employment nexus

Download or read book Delving deeper into the agricultural transformation and youth employment nexus written by Adesugba, Margaret Abiodun and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2016-04-19 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Youth employment is not an entirely new topic for research and policy. Recent estimates from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) (2013a) suggest that high and rising unemployment rates among youth remain a key challenge to global development, especially in the developing world. This is particularly important in sub-Saharan Africa where about 85 percent of youth (defined by the ILO as all those between the ages of 15 and 24 years) are poor, 70 percent live in rural areas where agriculture is the main source for their income and subsistence, and 11 million youth are expected to enter the labor market every year for the next decade (World Bank 2014). These characteristics of youth in sub-Saharan Africa justify the centrality of the nexus between youth employment and agriculture in formulating development policy on the continent. At the same time, youth unemployment is currently one of the issues receiving attention at the top of the global development agenda.

Book Challenges and Prospects in African Education Systems

Download or read book Challenges and Prospects in African Education Systems written by Soji Oni and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-11-14 with total page 971 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Challenges and Prospects in African Education System: The general idea this book is trying to disseminate is to inform readers about the compelling challenges and prospects in African system of education. As we all know, when issues of Africa educational system is raised, the first set of thoughts that come to mind is decline in standard, deterioration of facilities, examination malpractices, cult crises or school-based violence, shortage of teachers, underqualified teachers, and poor teachers performance, which results in poor learning standards, lack of classroom discipline that is exacerbated by insufficient resources and inadequate infrastructure, failure of appropriate inspection and monitoring, and confusion caused by changing curricula without proper communication and training. All these have led to massive demoralization and disillusionment among teachers and a negative and worsening perception of African system of education. This, therefore, calls for in-depth analysis aimed at tutoring every stakeholder in education on how their action and inactions have individually and collectively contributed to the collapsing state of education in Africa. However, the prospect is that Africas recovery and sustainable development can only be guaranteed through expansion and sustenance of both quantitative and qualitativeof the continents stock of human capital through education. In order for education to realize its key role in development, it must be provided to the younger segments of African society as quickly as human and financial resources permit, with the ultimate goal of developing a comprehensive, meaningful and sustainable system of education at all levels and for all age groups. This is the message that this book puts across in the six knitted sections.

Book Entrepreneurial Orientation of Graduate Students in the University of Ibadan South West Nigeria

Download or read book Entrepreneurial Orientation of Graduate Students in the University of Ibadan South West Nigeria written by Ajibola Omoarebun and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2014 in the subject Sociology - Work, Education, Organisation, grade: 5.0 (A), University of Ibadan, language: English, abstract: Graduate unemployment in Nigeria is a chief cause of many social problems such as fraud, armed robbery and so on. Among the several reasons social researchers have listed as contributing factors to graduate unemployment, a lack of comprehensive curricula in the higher institutions has been pin-pointed to be crucial to the malaise of graduate unemployment. Entrepreneurship education if imbibed in the curricula of tertiary institutions would instill entrepreneurial behavior in students and graduates, which would further encourage graduates to become self-reliant and employers of labor. This study examined the levels of entrepreneurship orientation among graduate students in the University of Ibadan. The study made use of theories of planned behaviour and creativity and innovation theories. The sample was made up of 270 graduate students randomly drawn from six faculties of the University of Ibadan. Qualitative and quantitative data for the study were collected through the use of questionnaires and in-depth oral interviews. The result showed that majority of the respondents (78%) had never been exposed to entrepreneurship education upon the completion of their first degree. More than half of the respondents (55.6%) rated their level of entrepreneurial orientation as high, 31.4% rated it as moderate and the remaining 13.0% rated it as low. The paper asserts that graduate students are willing to become entrepreneurs if exposed to active entrepreneurship education - as they are cognizant of the benefits of being self-reliant and independent of the labor market.

Book The Place of Government and the Press in rousing unemployed Graduates interest to Entrepreneurship

Download or read book The Place of Government and the Press in rousing unemployed Graduates interest to Entrepreneurship written by Odey Robert and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-03-16 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A.1, , language: English, abstract: The failure of both the government and the press in their supposed responsibilities to rouse the teeming populated unemployed graduates to entrepreneurship is the paramount reason for the current high rates of crimes, social vices and violence as the products of high unemployment in Nigeria. Nigerian graduates, especially those from the lower class, the poor, are now treated like nonentities that are stack illiterates. These underlying problems ground this study. The study is aimed at exploring the extent to which government and the press have roused the interest of Nigerian youths, particularly the unemployed graduates, to entrepreneurship. The study reveals that: the government of all levels and the press have done little or nothing to rouse the interest of the unemployed graduates to entrepreneurship; existing entrepreneurs of this class often suffer severe capital issues, which discourages intending entrepreneurs, other unemployed graduates, as the government only aids those who have ‘people in Government House(s) and other high class offices’. It maintains (recommends) that the best way for the government to rouse their interest to entrepreneurship is to drop lip-service and practically mobilise and support jobless youths to become self-employed and thus become automatically detached from all forms of social ills, having taking to it as an alternative. Then, the Press takes it up from there by making entrepreneurship a splash to the unemployed graduates and the general masses. The study is anchored on the psychological or entrepreneurial trait school and the managerial skills school cum the economic development theory. This study concludes that until the government and the press turn a new leave and practically and actively begin to rouse the interest of the unemployed graduates to entrepreneurship, as a practical alternative, unemployment would continue to increase alarmingly, with its devastating menace. The non-participant observation, oral interview and intuition are the primary sources employed, while closely related literature formed the secondary sources.

This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2019 in the subject Sociology - Work, Profession, Education, Organisation, grade: A, , course: English, language: English, abstract: Unemployment has remained a contentious cog in the development of Nigeria as a nation. With the increasing turnout of graduates yearly from Tertiary Institutions, many graduates have remained unemployed and underemployed for a long period. This, no doubt, does not only affect national development but also continue to militate against the quality of education in Nigeria. This study is carried out to examine the effects of unemployment on the quality of education in Nigeria. It investigates the impact of unemployment on the attitude, perception and disposition of students towards education; how this attitude and perception affect the productivity of students and its overall impact on the quality of education. A self-structured questionnaire was used to elicit information from 105 respondents randomly selected from corps members, graduates, undergraduates, primary school teachers, secondary school teachers and college of Education lecturers from Ikere Local Government Area of Ekiti state. The study revealed that unemployment has discouraged majority of the students to be serious with academic activities which hinders their creative imagination and enhances criminal activities in schools. Most students are crazy to have certificates they cannot defend. This study, therefore, recommends the need to reposition education towards developing the creative skills of students and re-orientation of students on the essence of education as a means of widening their horizon so that they can make use of opportunities around rather than expecting automatic ticket to white collar jobs which are not readily available.
