Book Talking Science

  • Author : Wolff-Michael Roth
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield Publishers
  • Release : 2005-05-26
  • ISBN : 1461666341

Download or read book Talking Science written by Wolff-Michael Roth and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2005-05-26 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the fundamental nature of talk in school science. Language as a formal system provides resources for conducting everyday affairs, including the doing of science. And while writing science is one aspect, talking science may in fact constitute a much more important means by which we navigate and know the world-the very medium through which we do science. In Talking Science Wolff-Michael Roth articulates a view of language that differs from the way science educators generally think about it. Knowing language, in this view, is no longer distinct from knowing one's way around a particular section of the world. It is a non-representational view of language and dispenses with language as a barrier between the individual subject and the world it knows. In addition, the book includes detailed analyses from actual classrooms to exemplify what such a different approach means for science education. The conclusion is that once we have learned new ways of articulating the world and talking about it, we also have learned to handle this world more easily.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The brain is the most complex organ in the human body. It produces our every thought, action, memory, feeling and experience of the world. This jelly-like mass of tissue, weighing in at around 1.4 kilograms, contains a staggering one hundred billion nerve cells, or neurons. To be in nutshell, it thinks, feels, imagines, emotes, remember, argue, propose, theorize and for that matter everything that related to one’s existence. Without brain body is nothing but animalist, a super mammal. The complexity of the connectivity between these cells is mind-boggling. Each neuron can make contact with thousands or even tens of thousands of others, via tiny structures called synapses. Our brains form a million new connections for every second of our lives. The pattern and strength of the connections is constantly changing and no two brains are alike.
