Book excerpt: The story of the Bible starts with the simple statement, "In the beginning, God created . . ." From that first sentence of Genesis, the story of salvation unfolds in strange and wonderful mingling of the commonplace and the miraculous, the human and the transcendent. But if you were born after the baby boom, chances are the Bible seems more like an item of passing interest than a book of depth and meaning for the twenty-first century. If you're not familiar with the Bible, it can be difficult to put into perspective the puzzle of kings and prophets, giants and seven-headed dragons, shepherd boys and itinerant preachers, Old Testament law and New Testament grace. Meet the Bible introduces you to the full, epic sweep of the Bible -- the characters, the places, the times, the stories, and the meanings of this Book of books -- and shows you that even the most obscure passage can hold relevance for your life once you understand what to look for. Award-winning writer Philip Yancey and author Brenda Quinn are your guides on this one-year reading tour of the Bible. Each day's reading includes Scripture, contemporary commentary, and questions for contemplation -- all designed to offer insight into how the passage fits into the overall story of the Bible, and how it can speak to your life today. Meet the Bible takes you through the twists and turns of the Bible's many narratives, the high points and the low points, the good characters and the bad, as well as the eternal thoughts and descriptions of God and his Son, Jesus Christ. Here are stories to remember, images of real people and circumstances closer to your own life than you've ever imagined. By the time you've finished the year's worth of reading, you'll have gained a panoramic view of the whole Bible and a firm understanding of its ideas and teachings. If you've never read the Bible, or hardly know the Bible, or would just like to read the Bible in a fresh new way, Meet the Bible offers an inspiring mix of timeless wisdom and contemporary insight that will cause faith to ignite within you. Direct excerpts from Scripture give readers a panoramic tour of the Bible’s key passages, personalities, events, and ideas as the Old Testament sweeps into the New Testament. Culturally relevant commentary from Quinn and Yancey sheds light on each day’s passage, examining the twists and turns of the Bible’s many narratives, the high points and the low points, the good characters and the bad, as well as the eternal thoughts and descriptions of God and his Son. Reflections every five days provide life application for the week’s Scripture readings.

Book The Christian Musicians Devotional

Download or read book The Christian Musicians Devotional written by Marie Wise and published by . This book was released on 2014-04-30 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Digging deeper into ministry means drawing closer to God and living His love for people. The Christian Musicians Devotional is specifically for Christian musicians who desire extraordinary music ministries. This book addresses the attitudes, issues, and difficulties involved with music ministry. Each of the 365 daily devotions is designed to keep us focused on what really matters: to love God and live His love for people. Only by living love can we attain our goal of bringing people closer to Jesus. More importantly, only by maintaining a dynamic love for God can we sustain the extraordinary music ministry that God has planned for us. The definition of a Christian music minister does not necessarily include being signed to a national label or a photograph on the cover of a well-known magazine. Many Christian music ministers will never be famous. Most of us work another job to support our music. Being a tent-maker, like the apostle Paul, does not lessen the impact or the power of our ministry. Likewise, being paid to do full time work in our ministry, like the apostle Peter, does not eliminate the struggles of life as a musician. Regardless of whether we work full time in ministry or as tent-makers, Christian music ministers must stay spiritually strong while working long hours both on and off the road. The Christian Musicians Devotional will help us develop a deeper love for God and for people.

Book For Those of Us Waiting on That Day

Download or read book For Those of Us Waiting on That Day written by Ann Dillon and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 619 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anyone that has had a loved one go home knows the pain and sorrow that can overwhelm them. The loss of a loved one can send you into a deep abyss of pain and sorrow. Do you wonder where your loved one is? What is he or she doing? What is Heaven like? How do you find comfort in the pain? Where is God when it hurts? This book was written as the author found herself asking the same questions when, while still grieving the loss of her dad, her strong, healthy husband had a sudden heart attack. On November 2, 2011, her husband of thirty-eight years was called home to heaven. Trying to hold on to her faith while reeling from shock and grief, she threw herself into studying Gods Word and holding on to her faith while she tried to seek answers and comfort. Being unable to find a devotional that was specifically for grieving Christians lead her to write her first book. You will find comfort and assurance that you will be reunited with your loved one in the scripturally based devotions as you read what God has laid on her heart. Ann gives you a daily devotional that helps you focus on heaven, Gods sovereignty and everlasting love, eternity, and that glorious day we will be reunited with our loved ones, and help you find comfort and an eternal perspective as you wait on that day.

Book You ll Get Through This

Download or read book You ll Get Through This written by Max Lucado and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2013-09-10 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We all fear that the depression will never lift, the disappointment will never stop, the pain will never leave. Here in the pits, surrounded by steep walls, we wonder if our gray skies will ever brighten. Though these unprecedented and challenging times may bring a load of uncertainty and fear that feels too heavy to bear, God gives us this promise: You'll Get Through This. In You'll Get Through This, pastor and New York Times bestselling author Max Lucado traces the story of Joseph as told in the book of Genesis. The Bible tells us that Joseph was tossed into a pit by his brothers, sold into slavery, wrongfully imprisoned, forgotten and dismissed. Yet Joseph's story is proof that we can flourish even in this broken world. On his darkest days, Joseph may have thought that the sun would never shine again, but God ultimately used these hardships for a greater purpose. Whether you find yourself in the pit of financial downturn, job loss, health crisis, or relationship stresses, God has a plan and a path forward designed just for you. Max reminds readers God doesn't promise that getting through trials will be quick or painless, but he does use our mess for good. In this book, Max will help you: Find comfort in the knowledge that you are God's child and God cares deeply for you Remember that God is near you and has never left you Look for hope in each hardship that you face Lean on your loving community in challenging times Take courage that God will restore even the most painful circumstances and use them for good Each copy of You'll Get Through This includes thoughtful questions for reflection designed to give you a chance to dive deeper into the hard yet hopeful story of Joseph's perseverance. With the compassion of a pastor, the heart of a storyteller, and the joy of one who has seen what God can do, Max explores the story of Joseph and the truth of Genesis 50:20: what Satan intends for evil, God redeems for good.

Download or read book For the Love of Music written by Don and Delayna Beattie and published by . This book was released on 2017-05-03 with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the pages of this Devotional are writings that have deeply inspired and shaped our musical, educational and spiritual lives. Having been collecting these types of writings for nearly 50 years, this collection has truly been a lifetime in the making and will continue to inspire our lives. So wishing to share these writings with all those who love music, we felt that a Daily Devotional would be the best format in which to do so. We enjoy reading devotionals and a short reading at the beginning of our day often helps set the tone for the day in a positive way. May this Devotional serve you well in a similar way. While many write with great insight on the subjects of how we think, how we learn, how we love and how we live, we have found such inspiration in the most unexpected places. The few words on a wall hanging in our grandmother's kitchen, "You are Thy Thoughts," found a permanent place in our hearts. May the writings of this devotional serve as daily inspiration for you and find a meaningful place in your hearts and thoughts regarding music and life. In our lives, we continue to learn so much about the gift, the power, the meaning and the learning of music. At the same time, the great pianist and teacher, Franz Liszt, said that in playing the piano, "we so easily become preoccupied with the manual work of playing that we forget to rise again to the source." To take his thought a step further, we have often found ourselves so preoccupied with the "manual work" of life that we forget to "rise to the source" of life. Thanks in part to these writings, we are able to continually renew our appreciation and gratitude for the gift of life, the gift of love and in the case of this Devotional, the gift of music. In a word, music is a "gift" and as another has expressed "the universal language of mankind." Experiencing this universal gift, in the hands of children and great artists alike, has inspired us beyond words. We have seen music lift the soul, give voice to the heart, foster an ever expanding vision of the gift of life and even save lives. We need music and we need the continuing guidance of those great artists in our midst and those who have come before to show us the way to "the source." In the words of the great German composer, Robert Schumann, "when you think you have an original idea, think again." There is no doubt in our minds that the "origin" of so many deeply meaningful thoughts in our lives have come from others. May this devotional, comprised of the words of many others, bring you an ever deepening understanding of love for music and for life.
