Book Rose

Download or read book Rose written by Gary E. Vawter and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-11 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eight-year-old Rose had everything a girl needed growing up in Vienna, Austria before World War II. She was christened as Rose Edith Irene Frances Brezcina, after several Catholic Saints and, although she did not know it then, she would need all of the divine intervention she could get in the years that followed. She and her extended family lived peaceful ordinary lives in a typical working class Viennese neighborhood, but there was nothing ordinary or typical about Rose. She possessed a spiritual awareness beyond her years, and she brought a spirit of confidence and joy into every situation. Whether she was sitting with her grandmother who was dying of colon cancer, and trying not to gag from the stench of the colostomy bag, or enjoying a fun-filled summer in the Austrian countryside with her cousins on her aunt and uncle's farm, Rose lived her life with a deep sense of faith and purpose that would serve her well in the days ahead. Her faith would soon be tested, though, as the Nazi army moved into Austria in 1938 and war came to her city. Before she would even reach her teens, Rose would be among top gymnasts selected to perform for Hitler and, afterwards shake his hand and receive his personal congratulations; she would witness her best friend, Marta, a Jew, seized from her classroom by the Gestapo and taken to a concentration camp, never to be seen or heard from again; she would willingly accept her uncle's invitation to join him in an underground effort to hide Jews, by providing him food that she managed to sneak from her mother's pantry; and, as a result of her efforts, she would suffer painful torture on two separate occasions by Gestapo and SS soldiers who were determined to force her to reveal the whereabouts of her uncle and his underground activities. But, despite their torture, she did not betray her uncle's trust. As if that was not enough, Rose experienced the death of her only sibling, her three-year-old brother, in an air raid bombing. In th

Book excerpt: GRACE: God's Riches At Christ's ExpenseWe know a lot about and emphasize "Christ's expense," but we have barely tapped into what God's riches are or how to put them into practice in our lives. Most Christians know that grace literally means favor.True story: I had a friend once whose uncle was the dictator of a small country. She could have had all the riches of that country. She chose not to, fearing what would happen to her if his government was overthrown, but you get the idea. The favor of a ruler can lead to all sorts of luxurious benefits.God is the greatest ruler of all, and he has abundant (spiritual) riches for his children, which the apostles sum up under the word "grace."Too few Christians have any idea of the riches inherent in God's favor, so they do not benefit any more than my friend benefitted from her uncle's favor. Grace explores the Bible's passages on grace and explains, in easy to understand terms, how to apply it to our lives. This little booklet could easily become the most important book you have ever read.

Book excerpt: Set during Ireland’s devastating potato famine, a spellbinding novel of a young woman torn between love for her family and duty to her English husband. Patrick O’Malley names his newborn daughter Gracelin for the light of the sea that shines in her eyes. But when young Gracelin is only six years old, her mother’s untimely death drains joy and laughter from the O’Malley clan. At fifteen, Gracelin saves her family from financial ruin by marrying Bram Donnelly, the son of a wealthy English landowner. But, even though Gracelin is Protestant, she is snubbed by English high society for marrying above her station. To temporarily appease her husband’s cruel nature, she intends to provide him with an heir—but that, too, will end in sorrow. As famine sweeps Ireland, Gracelin openly defies her husband by feeding the desperate souls who come to their door. In secret, she also sides with the rebels who call themselves the Young Irelanders. Led by Morgan McDonagh and joined by Gracelin’s beloved brother, Sean, the Irelanders are determined to fight and free their homeland from the yoke of English rule. A vivid chronicle of nineteenth-century Ireland, the first volume of Ann Moore’s popular trilogy introduces a courageous young heroine and movingly portrays an indomitable people as they struggle to survive the infamous famine and the brutal civil war that arrived in its wake. Fans of gripping historical fiction will love this “epic saga that sweeps you into the life of a remarkable woman” (Romantic Times).
