Book State Government in Transition

Download or read book State Government in Transition written by Reed M. Smith and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a case study of the George M. Leader administration in Pennsylvania, 1955-1959, with particular reference to the administrative rather than the political changes that took place during that period. Governor Leader was more active in the reorganization of the central staff services in Pennsylvania than any governor since the 1920s.The most significant changes resulted from the establishment of an Office of Administration within the governor's office. This department embraced a number of staff and operating functions including central budgeting and program evaluation. Over half the text is concerned with the new function of program evaluation, which the Leader administration treated as a basic administrative process, requiring a structure and identity separate from that of the other staff functions. The author also discusses the traditional nature of the governorship in Pennsylvania, noting the changes that took place as a result of the political and administrative transition in 1955. These changes were in the form of personnel brought into the state service at all levels, the extension of civil service by executive order, the use of patronage, removal power, executive clemency, and other fiscal and personnel reforms. Other significant stare issues discussed by the author include the use of advisory groups, the nature of the governor's cabinet and staff, the role of "egg heads" in government, the merit system and its extension in a strong patronage situation, and fiscal policy. State Government in Transition is not only a valuable addition to the literature on state government; it is also a book of great practical value—particularly for the political scientist, student, government worker, or politician. An appendix with a comparative chart of the governors of Pennsylvania under the Constitution of 1874, which is still in effect, and an organizational chart of the governor's office in 1960 supplement the text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cutting-edge research companion addresses our current understanding of literary journalism’s global scope and evolution, offering an immersive study of how different nations have experimented with and perfected the narrative journalistic form/genre over time. The Routledge Companion to World Literary Journalism demonstrates the genre’s rich genealogy and global impact through a comprehensive study of its many traditions, including the crónica, the ocherk, reportage, the New Journalism, the New New Journalism, Jornalismo literário, periodismo narrativo, bao gao wen xue, creative nonfiction, Literarischer Journalismus, As-SaHafa al Adabiyya, and literary nonfiction. Contributions from a diverse range of established and emerging scholars explore key issues such as the current role of literary journalism in countries radically affected by the print media crisis and the potential future of literary journalism, both as a centerpiece to print media writ large and as an academic discipline universally recognized around the world. The book also discusses literary journalism's responses to war, immigration, and censorship; its many female and Indigenous authors; and its digital footprints on the internet. This extensive and authoritative collection is a vital resource for academics and researchers in literary journalism studies, as well as in journalism studies and literature in general. Book Mass Media Mass Propaganda

Download or read book Mass Media Mass Propaganda written by Anthony DiMaggio and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2008-04-28 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mass Media, Mass Propaganda analyzes a wide range of issues, domestic and international, concerning American and global news coverage of the U.S. 'War on Terror.' Topics reviewed include: media coverage of the invasion and occupation of Iraq, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, Iraqi civil war and resistance to occupation, September 11th and 'Operation Enduring Freedom' in Afghanistan, human rights violations in Iraqm domestic anti-way dissent and censorship, and potential future targets in the 'War on Terror.' This work approaches the study of media through a political economy analysis, examining the ways in which the American corporate media works to reinforce official views and propaganda, and the ways in which it challenges official pro-war platforms. A comparative approach is taken in contrasting the American mass media with other media institutions from the Progressive-Left American press, the British and Australian press, and Arab electronic media. Major models analyzed and evaluated throughout this work include the 'Propaganda Model,' developed by Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman, and the 'Indexing Model,' elaborated upon by scholars such as W. Lance Bennett, Steven Livingston, and Jonathan Mermin.
