Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Governor Chamberlain's Administration in South Carolina: A Chapter of Reconstruction in the Southern States This volume is what its title expresses; it is the record of the Administration of Governor Chamberlain in South Carolina, and nothing more. It was undertaken because it was believed that the period covered by it, though brief, had a character and significance making it worthy of study and remembrance. What is called "Reconstruction" was certainly a peculiar phase of our American civil life. It presented new questions, new difficulties, social, political, legal, and constitutional. The result of the overthrow and surrender of the armies of the South was to present at once the novel and perplexing question, how to deal with the civil Governments of the Southern States. The theories put forward at that time seem now, many of them, grotesque, - Mr. Sumner's theory of State suicide not the least so. The question of the legal relation of those States to the Union during and at the close of the war, has not yet passed beyond the line of discussion and controversy. The Supreme Court of the United States has announced the doctrine of "an indestructible Union, composed of indestructible States." Yet, the Reconstruction Acts of 1867 which proceeded on the theory of the destruction of the State Governments of the rebellious States, have been carried into effect and recognized as valid by all branches of the Federal Government. It is not necessary to reconcile conflicting theories. What is plain is that Reconstruction as it proceeded under the Acts of Congress, involved the most serious consequences to all the people of the South. Book excerpt: As a member of a distinguished South Carolina family, Matthew Calbraith Butler led a most interesting life. His cavalry service during the Civil War saw him rise from regimental captain to major general in command of a division. He began the war with Jeb Stuart and participated in all of his early campaigns. Butler was wounded in the battle at Brandy Station and lost his foot as a result, but he returned to duty and the battles outside of Richmond in 1864, then hurried South to resist Sherman's advance into South Carolina. Unlike many other Confederate generals, Butler remained influential after the War. He served in the U.S. Senate for eighteen years, oversaw the end of Reconstruction in South Carolina, and was a major general during the Spanish-American War.

Book South Carolina Negroes 1877 1900

Download or read book South Carolina Negroes 1877 1900 written by George Brown Tindall and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2021-12-16 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of African Americans in South Carolina after Reconstruction and before Jim Crow First published in 1952, South Carolina Negroes, 1877–1900 rediscovers a time and a people nearly erased from public memory. In this pathbreaking book, George B. Tindall turns to the period after Reconstruction before a tide of reaction imposed a new system of controls on the black population of the state. He examines the progress and achievements, along with the frustrations, of South Carolina's African Americans in politics, education, labor, and various aspects of social life during the short decades before segregation became the law and custom of the land. Chronicling the evolution of Jim Crow white supremacy, the book originally appeared on the eve of the Civil Rights movement when the nation's system of disfranchisement, segregation, and economic oppression was coming under increasing criticism and attack. Along with Vernon L. Wharton's The Negro in Mississippi, 1865–1890 (1947) which also shed new light on the period after Reconstruction, Tindall's treatise served as an important source for C. Vann Woodward's influential The Strange Career of Jim Crow (1955). South Carolina Negroes now reappears fifty years later in an environment of reaction against the Civil Rights movement, a a situation that parallels in many ways the reaction against Reconstruction a century earlier. A new introduction by Tindall reviews the book's origins and its place in the literature of Southern and black history.

Book Reconstruction a Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Reconstruction a Very Short Introduction written by Allen C. Guelzo and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2020-01-14 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era known as Reconstruction is one of the unhappiest times in American history. It succeeded in reuniting the nation politically after the Civil War but in little else. Among its chief failures was the inability to chart a progressive course for race relations after the abolition of slavery and rise of Jim Crow. Reconstruction also struggled to successfully manage the Southern resistance towards a Northern, free-labor pattern. But the failures cannot obscure a number of notable accomplishments, with decisive long-term consequences for American life: the 14th and 15th Amendments to the Constitution, the election of the first African American representatives to the US Congress, and the avoidance of any renewed outbreak of civil war. Reconstruction suffered from poor leadership and uncertainty of direction, but it also laid the groundwork for renewed struggles for racial equality during the Civil Rights Movement. This Very Short Introduction delves into the constitutional, political, and social issues behind Reconstruction to provide a lucid and original account of a historical moment that left an indelible mark on American social fabric. Award-winning historian Allen C. Guelzo depicts Reconstruction as a "bourgeois revolution" -- as the attempted extension of the free-labor ideology embodied by Lincoln and the Republican Party to what was perceived as a Southern region gone astray from the Founders' intention in the pursuit of Romantic aristocracy. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area.
