Book The Subjugation of Canadian Wildlife

Download or read book The Subjugation of Canadian Wildlife written by Max Foran and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2018-04-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardly a day goes by without news of the extinction or endangerment of yet another animal species, followed by urgent but largely unheeded calls for action. An eloquent denunciation of the failures of Canada’s government and society to protect wildlife from human exploitation, Max Foran’s The Subjugation of Canadian Wildlife argues that a root cause of wildlife depletions and habitat loss is the culturally ingrained beliefs that underpin management practices and policies. Tracing the evolution of the highly contestable assumptions that define the human–wildlife relationship, Foran stresses the price wild animals pay for human self-interest. Using several examples of government oversight at the federal, provincial, and territorial levels, from the Species at Risk Act to the Biodiversity Strategy, Protected Areas Network, and provincial management plans, this volume shows that wildlife policies are as much – or more – about human needs, priorities, and profit as they are about preservation. Challenging established concepts including ecological integrity, adaptive management, sport hunting as conservation, and the flawed belief that wildlife is a renewable resource, the author compels us to recognize animals as sentient individuals and as integral components of complex ecological systems. A passionate critique of contemporary wildlife policy, The Subjugation of Canadian Wildlife calls for belief-change as the best hope for an ecologically healthy, wildlife-rich Canada.

Book A Canadian Priorities Agenda

Download or read book A Canadian Priorities Agenda written by France St-Hilaire and published by IRPP. This book was released on 2007 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rising income inequality has been at the forefront of public debate in Canada in recent years, yet there is still much to learn about the economic forces driving the distribution of earnings and income in this country and how they might evolve in the future. With research showing that the tax-and-transfer system is losing the ability to counteract income disparity, the need for policy-makers to understand the factors at play is all the more urgent. Income Inequality provides a comprehensive review of Canadian inequality trends, including changing earnings and income dynamics among the middle class and top earners, wage and job polarization across provinces, and persistent poverty among vulnerable groups. The Institute for Research on Public Policy (IRPP), in collaboration with the Canadian Labour Market and Skills Researcher Network (CLSRN), presents new evidence by some of the country’s leading experts on the impact of skills and education, unionization and labour relations laws, as well as the complex interplay of redistributive policies and politics over time. Amid growing anxieties about the economic prospects of the middle class, Income Inequality will serve to inform the public discourse on inequality, an issue that ultimately concerns all Canadians.

Book The Intellectual Property Regulatory Complex

Download or read book The Intellectual Property Regulatory Complex written by Emily Marden and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2016-03-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in agricultural genomics could help address pressing global issues, such as world hunger, by improving crop yield. However, overlap and conflict in intellectual property and biosafety regimes – known collectively as the “Intellectual Property–Regulatory Complex” – create significant barriers to innovation. In this collection, leading legal, policy, and economics experts analyze the impact of the Complex on agricultural genomics. They reveal how it impacts scientific advancement in ways that are underappreciated when intellectual property and biosafety regimes are examined in isolation. After identifying how the interplay between multiple regimes impedes research, development, and product distribution, they propose solutions that would further the aims of the current intellectual property and biosafety regimes while enabling growth and innovation in agricultural genomics.

Book From New Public Management to New Political Governance

Download or read book From New Public Management to New Political Governance written by Herman Bakvis and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the direct participation of partisan political staff in governance, the onset of permanent election campaigns heavily dependent on negative advertising, and the expectation that the public service will not only merely implement but enthusiastically support the agenda of the elected government, we are experiencing a new form of political governance. The late Peter Aucoin (1943-2011) has argued that traditional norms of impartial loyalty have been displaced by partisanship on the part of civil servants and that the political executive is keen on directly controlling all aspects of communication and interaction between government and citizens. The arrival of "New Political Governance" has a direct bearing on the long-standing tension between the need of ensuring democratic control over bureaucracy, while also allowing the public service sufficient flexibility to exercise discretion, judgment, and professional expertise when implementing and managing programs. Through a series of essays using Aucoin's "New Political Governance" framework, leading scholars in the field address the manner in which this tension and its conflicts have played out over the past decade in different domains. Contributors examine themes including accountability, democracy, public management and reform, the paradoxes of electoral democracy, and the dilemmas of democratic governance. Guy Peters (University of Pittsburg), Donald Savoie (Université de Moncton), Allan Tupper (University of British Columbia), Lori Turnbull (Dalhousie), David E.
