Book excerpt: Using the building blocks described in the Provincial Recovery Framework released in July 2013, the purpose of this Recovery Plan is to provide more detail for government ministries, municipalities, and other organizations to understand how the Government of Alberta intends to achieve the outcomes described in the Framework. [...] At the onset of the floods, the immediate priority was the health and safety of people in the affected areas and the stabilization of critical infrastructure. [...] Post-recovery vision: "When the recovery effort is complete, Albertans will be proud of how they have not only preserved, but enhanced our reputation and heritage." The AEMA took the lead on the first three priority objectives, while the Flood Recovery Task Force (FRTF) started planning ahead for the transition to the fourth objective. [...] Vision: Honour Albertans by supporting the social, environmental, and economic recovery of the province and its communities, industries and families to provide a healthy and resilient Alberta for current and future generations. [...] Provide the public with information in a timely and comprehensive manner, and coordinate with municipalities and First Nations involved in flood recovery efforts to do the same.

Book Community Engagement in Post Disaster Recovery

Download or read book Community Engagement in Post Disaster Recovery written by Graham Marsh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-11 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Community Engagement in Post-Disaster Recovery reflects a wide array of practical experiences in working with disaster-affected communities internationally. It demonstrates that widely held assumptions about the benefits of community consultation and engagement in disaster recovery work need to be examined more critically because poorly conceived and hastily implemented community engagement strategies have sometimes exacerbated divisions within affected communities and/or resulted in ineffective use of aid funding. It is equally demonstrated that well-crafted, creative and thoughtful programming is possible. The wide collection of case studies of practical experience from around the world is presented to help establish ways of working with communities experiencing great challenges. The book offers practical suggestions on how to give more substance to the rhetoric of community consultation and engagement in these areas of work. It suggests the need to work with a dynamic understanding of community formation that is particularly relevant when people experience unforeseen challenges and traumatic experiences. This title interrogates the concept of community through an extensive review of the literature and explores the ways of working with communities in transition and particularly in their recovery phases through an array of case studies in a range of socioeconomic and political contexts. Focused on the concept of community in post-disaster recovery solutions—an aspect which has received little critical interrogation in the literature—this book will be a valuable resource to students and scholars in disaster management as well as humanitarian agencies.

Book Resettlement Challenges for Displaced Populations and Refugees

Download or read book Resettlement Challenges for Displaced Populations and Refugees written by Ali Asgary and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-16 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main focus of this book is to help better understand the multidimensionality and complexity of population displacement and the role that reconstruction and recovery knowledge and practice play in this regard. According to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the total number of people forcibly displaced due to wars and conflicts, disasters, and climate change worldwide, exceeded 66 million in 2016. Many of these displaced populations may never be able to go back and rebuild their houses, communities, and businesses. This text brings together recovery and reconstruction professionals, researchers, and policy makers to examine how displaced populations can rebuild their lives in new locations and recover from disasters that have impacted their livelihoods, and communities. This book provides readers with an understanding of how disaster recovery and reconstruction knowledge and practice can contribute to the recovery and reconstruction of displaced and refugee populations. This book will appeal to students, researchers, and professionals working in the field.

Book Canada The State of the Federation 2013

Download or read book Canada The State of the Federation 2013 written by Martin Papillon and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2016-03-01 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally associated with the federal government, Aboriginal policy has arguably become a far more complex reality. With or without formal self-government, Aboriginal communities and nations are increasingly assertive in establishing their own authority in areas as diverse as education, land management, the administration of justice, family and social services, and housing. The 2013 State of the Federation volume gathers experts and practitioners to discuss the contemporary dynamics, patterns, and challenges of Aboriginal multilevel governance in a wide range of policy areas. Recent court decisions on Aboriginal rights, notably on the duty to consult, have forced provincial and territorial governments to develop more sustained relationships with Aboriginal organizations and governments, especially in the management of lands and resources. Showing that Aboriginal governance is, more than ever, a multilevel reality, contributors address questions such as: What are the challenges in negotiating and implementing these bilateral and trilateral governance agreements? Are these governance arrangements conducive to real and sustained Aboriginal participation in the policy process? Finally, what are the implications of these various developments for Canadian federalism and for the rights and status of Aboriginal peoples in relation to the Canadian federation?

Book excerpt: In Canada, floods are the most destructive natural disaster in terms of cumulative property damages and losses (Kumar et al., 2001). In Alberta, major floods along rivers and streams have resulted in loss of lives and hundreds of millions of dollars in damages. Major recent flood events occurred in 1995, 1997 and 2005. River floods can occur throughout the year with precipitation leading to summer floods (1995 and 2005 floods) and river ice creating a potential for flooding in the winter (1997 floods). River flooding in Southern Alberta during the spring of 2005 tragically resulted in the loss of 3 lives and an economic loss of hundreds of millions of dollars. To date, the federal and provincial governments have provided over $165 million in disaster assistance for this flood event.
