Book Singapore Inc Versus the Private Sector

Download or read book Singapore Inc Versus the Private Sector written by Carlos D. Ramírez and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Government-linked companies (GLCs) have a significant presence in Singapore's corporate sector. Unlike parastatals in many other countries, these companies are run on a competitive, commercial basis, ostensibly without government privileges. Based on data from publicly listed GLCs and non-GLCs, we indeed find no evidence that GLCs have easier access to credit. However, we do find that being a GLC is rewarded in financial markets with a positive premium, over and above what can be explained by the usual determinants of Tobin's q.

Book Does State Capitalism Work in Singapore

Download or read book Does State Capitalism Work in Singapore written by Isabel Joo Lay Sim and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is divided literature on the utility of government-owned and governmentrun enterprises. This study adds to this literature by examining Singapore's stateowned companies called Government Linked Companies ("GLCs"). It addresses three questions: (i) How does Temasek, Singapore's state holding company own and govern listed GLCs? (ii) Do financial and operating performances of Singapore's GLCs improve after privatisation? (iii) Is there a link between the GLCs' performance and their corporate governance? Using data relating to the period 1980 to 2008, the study examines the role of GLCs within Singapore's economic policies; how they are privatised; their corporate background and management; the role of Temasek; and GLCs' performance and corporate governance practices. In providing insights into the role of Singapore's GLCs, this thesis brings into question much of the literature that is adverse to government ownership. Singapore's GLCs are well managed, efficient and profitable. They have played a vital economic role in transforming Singapore from a developing third world country to a developed first world country. The study suggests that Temasek applies stringent governance and operating guidelines to GLCs. The financial and operating performance of GLCs does not improve post-privatisation. The study further suggests that GLCs' performance is not related to several attributes of governance including board size, duality of office, the political connectedness of board members and board interlocks.

Book Intraco Blazing A Trail Overseas For Singapore

Download or read book Intraco Blazing A Trail Overseas For Singapore written by Faizal Bin Yahya and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-12-23 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through the lens of the now-defunct Singapore government-linked company (GLC) called International Trading Company (INTRACO), this book offers a historical analysis of the country's economic development strategy. Since its Independence in 1965, GLCs like INTRACO were introduced by the former Deputy Prime Minister, the late Dr Goh Keng Swee, a pioneer of Singapore's remarkable transformation from Third World to First, to fulfil strategic economic objectives. As the country's 'lifeblood' has been entreport trade, INTRACO was created to 'blaze a trail overseas' by facilitating commercial ties behind the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. The eventual divestment of INTRACO highlights the same way in which the Singaporean state is acutely responsive to changing global economic and geopolitical trends. This book is useful to academics, students, and the interested lay reader for its insights into the role of the state in economic development in post-colonial countries.

Book State owned Enterprises In A Mixed Economy

Download or read book State owned Enterprises In A Mixed Economy written by Mehdi Haririan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A distinctive feature of economic trends of the past three decades has been the increase in microeconomic intervention by state-owned enterprises (SOEs) in the market economies of rich industrial and poor developing nations. The majority of SOEs were established as policy instruments of choice in response to a variety of socioeconomic needs and socio-political problems. As persuasively demonstrated in this book, microeconomic efficiency criteria alone, stemming from the theory of a perfectly competitive economy, are badly designed criteria for public firms. The historical part of the book, in particular, discusses quite compellingly a number of causes other than market failures for the existence of state-owned enterprises. This discussion develops complex answers regarding causes for the existence of public firms.

Book Government Policy and Critical Success Factors of Small Businesses in Singapore

Download or read book Government Policy and Critical Success Factors of Small Businesses in Singapore written by Harold Siow Song Teng and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the main economic players responsible for Singapore’s economic success is its small and medium-sized enterprises or SMEs. Their overall success has helped propel the country and its people forward. From economic policies to politics, Singapore is a planned and regulated economy. Singapore’s economic success story is actually the result of a form of capitalism carefully calibrated and controlled by the government. An important element or aspect of good critical success factors (CSFs) emerges from the role being played by the government. The existence of good government or public policies that are pro-business is vital for the success of firms. Despite the fact that government policies and CSFs are widely studied in areas around the world including in Singapore, there is no comprehensive prediction model available to test if firms have potential to be successful or are more prone to failures. Much research investigates the non-financial factors contributing to success versus failure of small firms, but empirical tests of the predictability of these factors are less common. This book, which is primarily quantitative/ positivist in nature will attempt to fill this gap.

Book Eyes on the Prize

    Book Details:
  • Author : Connie Carter
  • Publisher : BRILL
  • Release : 2021-10-18
  • ISBN : 9004481052
  • Pages : 327 pages

Download or read book Eyes on the Prize written by Connie Carter and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most law and development books focus on "what went wrong". Eyes on the Prize is an exception: it focuses on "what went right" in Singapore's transformation from squalid colony to successful growth-oriented, capitalist state. It questions the efficacy and nature of the role of law in the forty-year transformation, in the light of traditional and neo-traditional theories of law and development. It has not been the "rule of law" as such that has contributed to Singapore's development. Rather it has been law as the embodiment of "mature policy" of a goal-oriented, politically stable, educated, largely non-corrupt, communitarian and authoritarian state bureaucracy, which was grafted onto the remnants of the previous colonial administrative structures. Dr Carter examines Singapore's economic development in relation to labour law, land law, and intellectual property law, testing these against key aspects of law and development theories. While analyses of the former challenge the law and development convergence theory, that of intellectual property law uncovers the transforming impact of global influences such as the WTO. As such, the book provides a novel and balanced account for the student of law and economic development.

Book Public Trust In Singapore

Download or read book Public Trust In Singapore written by David Chan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-12-12 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is clear that public trust plays a critical role in developing a vibrant economy and a strong society. A reasonably high level of public trust will enable the public, the Government, and the various organisations and groups in the different sectors in Singapore to work together to build a cohesive and adaptive community. This means a community characterised by constructive relationships embedded in positive economic, human, social, political and psychological capital.Public trust is important because it affects how people think, feel and behave. Trust takes time to build, is easy to lose, and once lost is difficult to restore. Trust is multi-dimensional, having to do with distinct aspects relating to competence, integrity and benevolence. Trust is also dynamic — it changes over time and the direction of change is not pre-determined.Given how critical and complex the concept of trust is, we need to have a valid and honest understanding of trust, if we want to shed light on how and why public trust changes, and how we can repair public trust violation and develop public trust in Singapore. The book is organised into four parts. Part 1 provides an overview of issues involved in thinking about public trust. Part 2 examines public trust in the context of upholding public accountability and discusses specific issues of public transport in Singapore. Part 3 analyses the relationships linking trust to social media analytics as well as healthcare. Part 4 addresses specific questions on public trust in Singapore in terms of social harmony, race and religion, education, civil society, social inequalities, dealing with differences and disagreements, political leadership, and relationships between people and government. This book will provide the reader new perspectives and possibilities related to questions that have become more salient in recent years as Singapore society underwent significant changes that likely impact on the nature and level of public trust.
