Detailed and well-documented, it presents a broad range of well-chosen topics in a precise and yet accessible style. It is an excellent choice for anyone seeking insight into the bond markets across the Eurozone and a valuable contribution to the study of these important markets.” Nico van der Wijst Professor of Finance Norwegian University of Science and Technology “Euro bonds mean different things to different people. The authors provide a well-researched and well-written comprehensive view of a vast and fast growing area of investment products, financial markets and debt financing instruments. Their narrative comes complete with a wealth of nicely-presented data. The book is a must-read for those studying European markets and the economy and an invaluable reference for those immersed in it, be they policymakers, investors or academic researchers. A big question mark hangs over the future of this book: Will it become the standard reference it deservers? Or will it be consigned soon to a footnote on the history of the Eurozone? The answer is in the hands of Eurozone leaders. Will they decisively address the structural problems of the common currency or will they continue with piecemeal solutions to every new crisis? For the sake of the authors — and of the people of Europe, of course — I hope for the former. The book itself offers some valuable guidance.” Stavros A Zenios Professor of Finance and Management Science, University of Cyprus and Senior Fellow, the Wharton Financial Institutions Center, USA “The recent Global Financial Crisis of 2007–09 has highlighted the critical role of corporate bonds, government bonds and sovereign debt, the role of credit rating agencies, securitization, and credit default swaps. This is a truly remarkable book that addresses all these issues with reference to the European bond markets. The book is a masterful creation of internationally recognized scholars and offers generous instruction and valuable insights; it is destined to become a classic in its field.” Tassos Malliaris Walter F Mullady Professor of Economics and Finance The Quinlan School of Business, Loyola University Chicago

Book An assessment of the current state of government bond market integration in the periphery of the euro area

Download or read book An assessment of the current state of government bond market integration in the periphery of the euro area written by Marc Blunden and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 80, University of Brighton, course: International Financial Markets, language: English, abstract: As the European Union emerges from its worst recession since the Second World War, it has to tackle an equally pressing issue: a sovereign debt crisis. Yield spreads in Greece, Portugal, Ireland and Spain have soared. The era of cheap government borrowing and integrated euro area (EA) government bond markets appears to be over, and fractures in EA solidarity are present. This dissertation seeks to update existing literature by assessing the current state of government bond market integration in the EA. Results suggest that many years of financial integration in EA government bond markets has been reversed in a few months, and that the status quo is not sustainable for the peripheral member countries. Unless Greece, Portugal, Ireland and (to a lesser extent) Spain adopt significant microeconomic structural reforms to regain long-lost competitiveness vis-à-vis the EA’s core (notably Germany), whilst at the same time avoid falling back into deep recession, the Euro project will not be able to continue in its current form.

Book Development of Financial Markets in Central Europe

Download or read book Development of Financial Markets in Central Europe written by Mr.Robert Tchaidze and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Financial markets in the CE4 countries are still shallow compared to other advanced EU countries. While the government bond markets are comparable in size, measured by capitalization in percent of GDP, the private bond, private credit, and equity markets lag behind. Empirical analysis in this paper helps identify factors that explain this phenomenon. We find that the observed differences cannot be explained by macroeconomic variables only, but incorporating indicators of institutional development and external funding eliminates the gap in the case of the equity and private credit markets. However, for the private bond market a significant gap remains even after accounting for these factors.

Book Euro Area Sovereign Risk During the Crisis

Download or read book Euro Area Sovereign Risk During the Crisis written by Ms.Silvia Sgherri and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-10-01 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the use of public resources is critical to cushion the impact of the financial crisis on the euro-area economy, it is key that the entailed fiscal costs not be seen by markets as undermining fiscal sustainability. From this perspective, to what extent do movements in euro area sovereign spreads reflect country-specific solvency concerns? In line with previous studies, the paper suggests that euro area sovereign risk premium differentials tend to comove over time and are mainly driven by a common time-varying factor, mimicking global risk repricing. Since October 2008, however, there is evidence that markets have become progressively more concerned about the potential fiscal implications of national financial sectors' frailty and future debt dynamics. The liquidity of sovereign bond markets still seems to play a significant (albeit fairly limited) role in explaining changes in euro area spreads.

Book The Impact of ECB Monetary Policy on Stock and Bond Market Liquidity The Case of Germany

Download or read book The Impact of ECB Monetary Policy on Stock and Bond Market Liquidity The Case of Germany written by Terence Kappeln and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2016-01-18 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject Economics - Finance, grade: 1,0, Vienna University of Economics and Business (Finance and Accounting), language: English, abstract: During the financial crisis and the following Eurozone crisis, liquidity in financial markets basically froze and became a problem for the real economy. Therefore, market liquidity became one of the major concerns of the ECB, which applied non-standard measures, e.g. irregular asset purchasing programmes. This paper sheds light on the impact of monetary policy on liquidity levels of the DAX 30 equity index and German 10-year government bonds. For the following analysis, the monetary policy impacts are estimated using the base money growth rate and EONIA rate, whereas the relative bid-ask spread is employed for measuring liquidity levels. The research method includes literature-based research about common market liquidity theories, a short timeline of important ECB monetary policy decisions, descriptive statistics on liquidity levels and monetary policy variables and a VAR analysis, including variables spreads, returns, volatilities, industrial production and inflation. The results indicate that a decrease (increase) in stock market liquidity or an increase (decrease) in bondmarket volatility lead to a decrease (increase) of EONIA. Furthermore, decreases (increases) in stock return or industrial production result in a decrease (increase) of EONIA. However, base money growth is positively correlated only to changes in bond market volatility. Overall, the results suggest that the monetary policy decisions by the ECB are influenced by changing market conditions without the ability to forecast liquidity levels.

Book The European Sovereign Debt Crisis and Its Impacts on Financial Markets

Download or read book The European Sovereign Debt Crisis and Its Impacts on Financial Markets written by Go Tamakoshi and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The global financial crisis saw many Eurozone countries bearing excessive public debt. This led the government bond yields of some peripheral countries to rise sharply, resulting in the outbreak of the European sovereign debt crisis. The debt crisis is characterized by its immediate spread from Greece, the country of origin, to its neighboring countries and the connection between the Eurozone banking sector and the public sector debt. Addressing these interesting features, this book sheds light on the impacts of the crisis on various financial markets in Europe. This book is among the first to conduct a thorough empirical analysis of the European sovereign debt crisis. It analyzes, using advanced econometric methodologies, why the crisis escalated so prominently, having significant impacts on a wide range of financial markets, not just limited to government bond markets. The book also allows one to understand the consequences and the overall impact of such a debt crisis, enabling investors and policymakers to formulate diversification strategies, and create suitable regulatory frameworks. Book European Central Bank Monetary Policy The View of the Sovereign Debt Crisis

Download or read book European Central Bank Monetary Policy The View of the Sovereign Debt Crisis written by Felix Lesch and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-05-21 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2020 im Fachbereich BWL - Bank, Börse, Versicherung, Note: 1,0, FOM Essen, Hochschule für Oekonomie & Management gemeinnützige GmbH, Hochschulleitung Essen früher Fachhochschule, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: This paper is about the European Central Bank Monetary Policy and the View of the Sovereign Debt Crisis. „Whatever it takes“– three simple but effective words had the desired effect and calmed the government bond markets in the summer of 2012, whose developments in the wake of the European sovereign debt crisis had led to immense financing difficulties for some member states of the euro area. Even more, the statement by Mario Draghi, then president of the European Central Bank (ECB), underlined the determination with which the ECB is willing to prevent a possible break up of the euro area. The measures taken by the ECB have included interest rate cuts, negative interest rates and purchase programmes of various assets. However, the ECB's measures did not meet with the exclusive approval of experts, they sometimes caused harsh public criticism and even the judiciary, in form of the Bundesverfassungsgericht (German Federal Constitutional Court) and the European Court of Justice (ECJ), had to address the issue. Against this background, this assignment aims to examine whether the monetary policy of the ECB infringes Article 123 (1) Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) which states the prohibition on monetary financing of member state budgets. To begin with, the origins of the European sovereign debt crisis are explained. The paper then outlines selected non-standard monetary policy measures taken by the ECB to mitigate the effects of the crisis, in form of Outright Money Transactions (OMTs) and the Public Sector Purchase Programme (PSPP). The fourth chapter focuses on the PSPP and analyses the programme against the background of Article 123(1) TFEU.

Book Sovereign Bond Market Integration

Download or read book Sovereign Bond Market Integration written by Alexander Schulz and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Different driving factors of sovereign bond market integration are disentangled by studying yield co-movements of EMU countries, the UK, the US and 16 German Länder in the last 15 years. At a low frequency of weeks, bond market integration has increased gradually in the course of the last 15 years in EMU countries, as well as the UK, the US and the German Länder. The euro, as well as increasing international capital flows, appears to drive low frequency integration. In contrast, yield adjustments to changes of the German benchmark bond at high frequencies, i.e., 2 days, remain relatively low until October 2000, when a sharp increase in integration can be observed in all samples. The increase in high frequency integration can be attributed to electronic trading platforms becoming functional. The change-over from national currencies to the euro can not explain the dramatic increase in high-frequency integration.
