Book excerpt: This exceptional history profiles Gouldtown, a settlement which in many ways typified small-town life in the New England of long ago. The historic settlement of Gouldtown, New Jersey carries a notable role in US history, with several distinguished persons born within its bounds. Although small, the town is remarkable for being one of the best catalogued in its region; this history contains dozens of photographs of local landmarks and community figures, immersing readers in the tight-knit existence residents led centuries ago. As such, this can be considered a snapshot of life in a distant period of America's past. Being written at the beginning of the 20thcentury, this work's style is vastly different from a modern history textbook. We are told a series of anecdotes - these are interesting, even whimsical, stories of the times before and after Gouldtown's founding. Various events and well-known locals are discussed, their spirit and determination to succeed and persevere detailed to a superb degree. We discover how locals supported local trade and commerce, contributed to religious life, and fought valiantly in the U.S. Civil War and other conflicts of the 19th century. In all, those interested in New England and American life long ago will find much value in this chronicle of the past.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gouldtown, a Very Remarkable Settlement of Ancient Date: Studies of Some Sturdy Examples of the Simple Life, Together With Sketches of Early Colonial History of Cumberland County and Southern New Jersey and Some Early Genealogical Records It has long been in mind to prepare and put in book form the oral traditions, as well as such authenticated facts, as could be collected from records and public documents of the remarkable settlement of people of color, which has here been attempted. The study of the three original families herein set forth in this county (Cumberland) and a fourth family connected to a degree with them, of Salem county origin, is a subject of some interest. That it is of more than local interest has been shown by lengthy newspaper articles in many metropolitan journals during the last thirty years. The settlement was made the subject of historical allusion more than three-quarters of a century ago; and while many of those periodical articles have been based upon very insufficient information, the writers having been attracted to the subject by the historical allusions above referred to, they have been of a character indicating estimation. To preserve these traditions, records, and histories as well as some of more enlarged interest, is the object here had in view. Book Elevating the Race

Download or read book Elevating the Race written by Albert George Miller and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2003 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church, an army chaplain, a college professor, and a prolific writer, Theophilus Gould Steward was one of America's leading black intellectuals during the half-century following Emancipation. He was not only a theologian deeply committed to challenging his church's outlook, he also epitomized postbellum efforts to create an African American civil society through religious, educational, and social institutions integral to citizenship. Steward actively constructed a theological discourse that challenged both black and white religious and secular institutions, yet his tenacious pursuit of high standards often led him into conflict with the very community he served. A. G. Miller takes a new look at this key figure in African American history to establish Steward's place among the most influential thinkers and activists of the late nineteenth century. Augmenting what is already known about Steward's life with a thoughtful combination of intellectual and social history, Miller presents Steward's ideas within the context of the social, political, economic, and religious trends of his day. Miller examines Steward's accomplishments and writings--including his unpublished manuscripts and his overlooked Victorian novel--to assess the ideas that he left to posterity and to consider how they shaped his times. The book devotes individual chapters to the key themes that dominated Steward's life: African American education, reconciling theology with modern science, the intersection of rational theology and moral virtues, the contradictions of race, the role of women in African American civil society, and Steward's views on the military and imperialism. With great insight and clarity, Miller discloses in a new and original way the rich life and thought of this extraordinary man. His study is both a groundbreaking analysis of Steward's legacy and an important contribution to the history of American religious thought. The Author: A. G. Miller is assistant professor of religion and Nord Faculty Fellow at Oberlin College and an ordained minister in the Pentecostal Church.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • WINNER OF THE PEN/FAULKNER AWARD • The Pulitzer Prize–winning author of American Pastoral delivers “a master novelist's haunting parable about our troubled modern moment" (The Wall Street Journal). It is 1998, the year in which America is whipped into a frenzy of prurience by the impeachment of a president, and in a small New England town, an aging classics professor, Coleman Silk, is forced to retire when his colleagues decree that he is a racist. The charge is a lie, but the real truth about Silk would have astonished even his most virulent accuser. Coleman Silk has a secret, one which has been kept for fifty years from his wife, his four children, his colleagues, and his friends, including the writer Nathan Zuckerman. It is Zuckerman who stumbles upon Silk's secret and sets out to reconstruct the unknown biography of this eminent, upright man, esteemed as an educator for nearly all his life, and to understand how this ingeniously contrived life came unraveled. And to understand also how Silk's astonishing private history is, in the words of The Wall Street Journal, "magnificently" interwoven with "the larger public history of modern America."

Book Slave Songs of the Georgia Sea Islands

Download or read book Slave Songs of the Georgia Sea Islands written by and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1992-03-01 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A valuable collection of folk music and lore from the Gullah culture, Slave Songs of the Georgia Sea Islands preserves the rich traditions of slave descendants on the barrier islands of Georgia by interweaving their music with descriptions of their language, religious and social customs, and material culture. Collected over a period of nearly twenty-five years by Lydia Parrish, the sixty folk songs and attendant lore included in this book are evidence of antebellum traditions kept alive in the relatively isolated coastal regions of Georgia. Over the years, Parrish won the confidence of many of the African-American singers, not only collecting their songs but also discovering other elements of traditional culture that formed the context of those songs. When it was first published in 1942, Slave Songs of the Georgia Sea Islands contained much material that had not previously appeared in print. The songs are grouped in categories, including African survival songs; shout songs; ring-play, dance, and fiddle songs; and religious and work songs. In additions to the lyrics and melodies, Slave Songs includes Lydia Parrish's explanatory notes, character sketches of her informants, anecdotes, and a striking portfolio of photographs. Reproduced in its original oversized format, Slave Songs of the Georgia Sea Islands will inform and delight students and scholars of African-American culture and folklore as well as folk music enthusiasts.
