Book excerpt: The zebra finch has been kept in captivity for more than a century and generally kept in pairs where they entertain themselves (merely play the radio) without a lot of interaction with their owners. The zebra finch is not actually the smallest of all the finches. The zebra finches have a colorful plumage. This makes the birds easy to identify. The zebra finch also has a thick, conical bill with an orange-red color or a waxy orange color that is bright and relatively easy to see from a distance. They are usually used in scientific research because of their short mating cycle. They have also been used for studies on fledging imprinting, mate selection and song learning specifically in regard to how they vocalize. This manual is designed to serve as a resource guide to everything you ought to know about zebra finch, the differences and color variation of the male and female zebra finch, the classification and origin of zebra finch, the behavioral pattern of the zebra finch, the housing of zebra finch. Book excerpt: The Gouldian Finch or Erythrura gouldian as it is known in the scientific community, is a stunningly attractive and vibrantly colored bird species found in northern Australia. It is often regarded as one of the most beautiful types of finch. The Gouldian Finch's colorful plumage reflects the bird's gender and age in various ways. Some distinguishing features of the Gouldian Finch are: - There are three main morphs, or variants, in the plumage of adult Gouldian Finches: black-headed (the males of this morph have black heads), red-headed (the males of this morph have red heads), and yellow-headed (the males of this morph have yellow heads). The body and wing colors of these varying species are also distinct from one another. - Dimorphism: Unlike some bird species, where men and females seem fairly identical, Gouldian Finches demonstrate strong sexual dimorphism. Males are often more vivid and eye-catching than females, especially in terms of their head colors. - The grasslands, open forests, and savannahs of northern Australia, especially the Kimberley region of Western Australia, the Northern Territory, and Queensland, are the primary habitats of these finches. - Gouldian finches are well-known for their friendly, communal demeanor. They congregate in small groups and forage together for food, which includes seeds, fruits, and insects. - Threats to Gouldian Finches include destruction of their natural habitat, interspecific competition, and predators. Many organizations are working to preserve their populations and natural environments because they are considered to be close to extinction. - Gouldian Finches are often kept and bred in aviculture (the keeping and breeding of birds in captivity) because to their eye-catching look. Aviary owners who care about the future of the Gouldian Finch population may choose to breed for certain color patterns to persist. The Gouldian Finch, as a species, is universally admired and celebrated for its gorgeous look and fascinating presence in both the wild and man-made aviaries.

Download or read book Grassfinches in Australia written by Mark Shephard OAM and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2012-08-09 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is not surprising that Australian grassfinches are highly popular with ornithologists and aviculturists, for included among the species are one of the most beautiful of all birds – the Gouldian Finch Erythrura gouldiae – and one of the most familiar cagebirds – the Zebra Finch Taeniopygia guttata. Despite a scarcity in published works on finches, interest in the species is growing, leading to a dramatic advancement in our knowledge of many species. For example, we have gained new information from field observations carried out on little-known species, including the Blue-faced Parrot-Finch Erythrura trichroa and the Red-eared Firetail Stagonopleura oculata. Significant advances in taxonomic research, largely as a consequence of the development and refinement of biochemical analyses, often involving DNA-DNA hybridisation, have given us a new insight into relationships among species, with some unexpected alliances being determined. Additionally, dramatic changes have taken place in avicultural practices, and in virtually all countries aviculture has taken on a new professional approach, with the most notable results being increased productivity and success with a wider variety of species. After a lapse of almost half a century since publication of Klaus Immelmann’s eminent work on finches, based on extensive field studies, the time has come for a new examination of Australian grassfinches. In Grassfinches in Australia, Joseph Forshaw, Mark Shephard and Anthony Pridham have summarised our present knowledge of each species, and have given readers a visual appreciation of the birds in their natural habitats and in aviculture. The resulting combination of superb artwork and scientifically accurate text ensures that this volume will become the standard reference work on Australian grassfinches. In addition to enabling aviculturists to know more about these finches in the wild as a guide to their own husbandry techniques, detailed information on current management practices for all species in captivity is provided. The book also includes colour plates depicting some of the more common mutations held in Australian and overseas collections.
