Book Medieval Ecclesiastical Buildings in Ireland 1789 1915

Download or read book Medieval Ecclesiastical Buildings in Ireland 1789 1915 written by Niamh NicGhabhann and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length study of the perception and treatment of Gothic church architecture in Ireland in the period between 1789 and 1915. The book considers three main areas: the perception of Gothic architecture; the development of a tradition of scholarship on Irish Gothic; and the actual changes wrought to the fabric of the buildings, as well as the social and legal framework for those changes. Shifting the focus from high-status monuments, such as the medieval cathedrals of Dublin, the book considers the treatment of smaller medieval buildings. These include the ruined monastic buildings and cathedral buildings outside of Dublin, but also smaller parish churches that were being restored for reuse as places of worship, such as those at Adare, County Limerick and at Ballintober, County Mayo. It examines the increasingly political interpretation of these monuments throughout the 19th century and the role of these buildings as sites of memory within devotional landscapes. The evolving professionalization of architectural restoration in this period is also charted, and is considered within the developing legal framework for the protection of what was seen as ancient and national heritage. Book Gothic Revival Architecture

Download or read book Gothic Revival Architecture written by Trevor Yorke and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-06-29 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Houses of Parliament to the Midland Hotel at St Pancras and Strawberry Hill House, Gothic Revival buildings are some of the most distinctive structures found in Britain. Far from a copy of medieval buildings, it was a style full of colour and invention, in which its exponents created a daring new approach to design. Throwing out the old Classical rule book, Gothic Revival architects like Pugin and George Gilbert Scott designed buildings which were asymmetrical in form and visually expressive of their function. The movement went beyond just bricks and mortar and had a strong moral code, the influence of which was still felt into the 20th century. In this illustrated book, Trevor Yorke tells the story of the Gothic Revival from its origins in the whimsical fancies of the Georgian Period through to its High Victorian climax.

Book Gothic Revival Worldwide

Download or read book Gothic Revival Worldwide written by Timothy Brittain-Catlin and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pugin’s global influence on church architecture and material reform The year 2012 marked the bicentenary of the gothic revival architect A.W.N. Pugin. His influence as a designer not only spread fast globally, but also played a leading part in the transformation of material culture from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. Pugin’s work has been comprehensively reevaluated over the last decade. In this volume sixteen leading scholars from across the globe discuss Pugin’s direct influence on church architecture and furnishing. Beautifully illustrated with a large selection of new photography, Gothic Revival Worldwide, the successor to the volume Gothic Revival published in 2000, reveals how Pugin’s ideas played a profound role in the changing face of material reform in church architecture as an expression of the evolving identity of the churches across the world from North America to Mongolia and the South Pacific. Book Gothic Revival

Download or read book Gothic Revival written by Megan Brewster Aldrich and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this richly illustrated book, Megan Aldrich traces the story of the Gothic Revival from its beginnings in the small, experimental buildings of the eighteenth century to its ultimate phase in the lavish buildings of the late nineteenth century. The book concentrates on the domestic forms of the style, from its use in castles and country houses to its influence on villas and cottages from the old world to the New World. This book is essential reading for all those interested in architecture and design. It covers the influence of the Gothic style, not only through the work of the great designers such as Burges, Pugin, Viollet-le-Duc and Wyatt, but also through many lesser-known figures. The worldwide influence of the Gothic Revival is amply demonstrated in the large selection of illustrations showing wall, floor and window treatments, as well as furniture. An invaluable source of ideas, this book illustrates much new material and celebrates an important chapter in the history of design.
