Download or read book Sports Religion and Disability written by Nick J. Watson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ground-breaking book provides a fascinating insight into the relationship between sports (and leisure), religion and disability. In the shadow of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, at which athletes that were both able-bodied and disabled, provided an extravaganza of sporting excellence and drama, this text is a timely and important synthesis of ideas that have emerged in two previously distinct areas of research: (i) ‘disability sport’ and (ii) the ‘theology of disability’. Many of the elite athletes at this global sporting mega-event often explicitly displayed their religious beliefs, and in turn their importance in the context of sport, by observing different religious rituals, and or, utilising the multi-faith sports chaplaincy service. This raises a whole range of unanswered questions with regard to the intersections between sports, religion and disability, which to-date has been under- researched. Examples of subjects addressed in this text include: elite physical disability sport--Paralympics; intellectual disability sport--Special Olympics; reflections on the illness narrative of the cyclist Lance Armstrong through the lens of the theology of ‘radical orthodoxy’; the application of biblical athletic metaphors in understanding modern conceptions of disability sport; the role of sport and spirituality in the rehabilitation of injured British Military personnel, and; the importance of sports and leisure in L’Arche communities. This book begins a critical conversation on these topics, and many others, for both researchers and practitioners. This book was based on two special issues of the Journal of Religion, Disability and Health.

Download or read book You re Beautiful written by Christine Trujillo and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2020-10-06 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a memoir of my life, and how God used death, loss, alcoholism, sickness, anger, and divorce to transform me through His redemptive work. I reveal how early in my life I tried to control all the events that occurred, but this only brought more pain, hurt, and heartache. I was going down a dead-end path that was leaving me stagnate in my spiritual life, and broken on the inside. However, God got my attention, and offered a way out of all the distress that I was going through. He offered me hope, love, and forgiveness, and taught me how to use what I had gone through to help others who are hurting and feeling hopeless. My life story is a living testimony of God’s love, grace, and transforming power through the cross. He took the ugliness and dysfunction that was in my life, and turned it into a beautiful gift from which others may benefit. My prayer is that others who read my story may see their value as God’s chosen child, and come to experience the most precious relationship there is.

Download or read book COVID 19 and Existential Positive Psychology PP2 0 The New Science of Self Transcendence written by Paul T. P. Wong and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the era of COVID-19, many people have suffered high levels of stress and mental health problems. To cope with the widespread of suffering (physical, psychological, social, and economical) the positive psychology of personal happiness is no longer the sole approach to examine personal wellbeing. Other approaches such as Viktor Frankl’s theory of self-transcendence provide a promising framework for research and intervention on how to achieve resilience, wellbeing, and happiness through overcoming suffering and self-transcendence. The existential positive psychology of suffering complements the positive psychology of happiness, which is championed by Martin Seligman, as two equal halves of the circle of wellbeing and optimal mental health. This Research Topic aims to examine the different approaches to Positive Psychology and their influence on individual wellbeing during the COVID-19 era. One of the exciting development in the positive psychology of wellbeing is the mounting research on the adaptive benefits of negative emotions, such as shame, guilt, and anger, as well as the dialectical process of balancing negative and positive emotions. As an example, based on all the empirical research and Frankl’s self-transcendence model, Wong has developed the existential positive psychology of suffering (PP2.0) as the foundation for flourishing. Here are a few main tenets of PP2.0: (1) Life is suffering and a constant struggle throughout every stage of development, (2) The search for self-transcendence is a primary motive guided by the meaning mindset and mindful mindset. (3) Wellbeing cannot be sustainable without overcoming and transforming suffering. In this Research Topic we welcome diverse approaches discussing the following points: • The dialectic process of overcoming the challenges of every stage of development as necessary for personal growth and self-transcendence; • The role of self-transcendence in resilience, virtue, meaning, and happiness; • The upside of negative emotions; • The new science of resilience based on cultivating the resilient mindset and character; • How to make the best use of suffering to achieve out potentials & mental health.
Download or read book The Greek Trilogy of Luis Alfaro written by Luis Alfaro and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the London Hellenic Prize 2020 The Greek Trilogy of Luis Alfaro gathers together for the first time the three 'Greek' plays of the MacArthur Genius Award-winning Chicanx playwright and performance artist. Based respectively on Sophocles' Electra and Oedipus, and Euripides' Medea, Alfaro's Electricidad, Oedipus El Rey, and Mojada transplant ancient themes and problems into the 21st century streets of Los Angeles and New York, in order to give voice to the concerns of the Chicanx and wider Latinx communities. From performances around the world including sold-out runs at New York's Public Theater, these texts are extremely important to those studying classical reception, Greek theatre and Chicanx writers. This unique anthology features definitive editions of all three plays alongside a comprehensive introduction which provides a critical overview of Luis Alfaro's work, accentuating not only the unique nature of these three 'urban' adaptations of ancient Greek tragedy but also the manner in which they address present-day Chicanx and Latinx socio-political realities across the United States. A brief introduction to each play and its overall themes precedes the text of the drama. The anthology concludes with exclusive supplementary material aimed at enhancing understanding of Alfaro's plays: a 'Performance History' timeline outlining the performance history of the plays; an alphabetical 'Glossary' explaining the most common terms in Spanish and Spanglish appearing in each play; and a 'Further Reading' list providing primary and secondary bibliography for each play. The anthology is completed by a new interview with Alfaro which addresses key topics such as Alfaro's engagement with ancient Greek drama and his work with Chicanx communities across the United States, thus providing a critical contextualisation of these critically-acclaimed plays.
Download or read book The Meaning of Life written by Norman Grubb and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2010-09-13 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Meaning of Life is the transcription of a series of six talks given by Norman Grubb in the early 1970's to Camps Farthest Out, a non-denominational group of Christians seeking to find the deeper truths of God…of themselves…of life...and how to live it. CFO had numerous guest speakers and this was one of several times Norman shared his `knowings' with them. Norman's passion and joy was always to tell every seeker how a perfect God lives in His perfectly created humans. In John 17, Jesus' last prayer before He goes to the Cross, Jesus prays for all of those who will believe in Him…that we might be one even as He and the Father are one. Jesus called the promise of His Cross oneness and unity…Norman spoke of the fulfillment of His promise as our union with Christ. In these talks Norman shows us, step by step, how the Father accomplishes His purposes for each of us. The front cover of this book is a `shadow' of this very truth. It is a picture of Moses' burning bush - a common bush aflame, yet not consumed…a profound image of man aflame with the Living Christ, but remaining fully human! This IS the meaning of life…God living and moving and having His being in and as man…Christ was seen and experienced through the human Jesus two thousand years ago and since Pentecost…Christ, by His Holy Spirit, has come to live again in all who receive Him.

The story is also about a dog and higher-dimensional entities, a very special piece of land, and a remarkable woman. It is a love story that began long ago, existing in many lifetimes. It is James's story, and it is Angelica's story, and the book could not exist without both of them. This book is a doorway, a glimpse into a reality which is contrary to third-dimensional conditioning, an example of the possible. It is an invitation for readers to understand their own journeys, to put together all the random events of their lives and find the connections. Ultimately, the book is what you discover it to be, and-hopefully-what it ignites within you.
