Book Disrupting and Countering Deficits in Early Childhood Education

Download or read book Disrupting and Countering Deficits in Early Childhood Education written by Fikile Nxumalo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-15 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This powerful edited collection disrupts the deficit-oriented discourses that currently frame the field of early childhood education (ECE) and illuminates avenues for critique and opportunities for change. Researchers from across the globe offer their insight and expertise in challenging the logic within ECE that often frames children and their families through gaps, risks, and deficits across such issues as poverty, language, developmental psychology, teaching, and learning. Chapters propose practical responses to these manufactured crises and advocate for democratic practices and policies that enable ECE programs to build on the wealth of cultural and personal knowledge children and families bring to the early learning process. Moving beyond a dependence on deficits, this book offers opportunities for scholars, researchers, and students to consider their practices in early education and develop their understanding of what it means to be an educator who seeks to support all children.

The text concludes with "Next Steps Commentaries" written by education luminaires Rolf Grafwallner, Jacqueline Jones, and Pamela J. Winton outlining concrete steps for action that will jump-start a conversation about moving forward with the ideas presented in the book. Download or read book Early Childhood Education and Change in Diverse Cultural Contexts written by Chris Pascal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-06-04 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Change is now a dominant feature of early childhood systems around the globe and many countries are currently facing significant economic, social and political developments that bring additional challenges that teaching and learning practices need to be able to respond to in a positive and effective way. Early Childhood Education and Change in Diverse Cultural Contexts examines how the educational systems in different countries respond to this change agenda, what they prioritise and how they deal with the adjustment process. Based on original and cutting-edge research and drawing upon diverse theoretical approaches, the book analyses new policies and pedagogical practices in a wide range of different cultural contexts. With contributions from Great Britain, the USA, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Estonia, New Zealand, South Africa and Singapore, this volume examines how educators might be able to innovate and respond positively to the shifting social and cultural situations in these contexts and others like them. Focusing on early childhood policy, professionalism and pedagogy, the book stimulates debate and dialogue about how the field is moving forward in the 21st century. Early Childhood Education and Change in Diverse Cultural Contexts should be essential reading for academics, researchers and postgraduate students engaged in the study of early childhood education, childhood studies and comparative education. Providing practical examples of how educational systems and educators might respond to change imperatives, the book should also be of great interest to teacher educators, current and pre-service teachers and policymakers around the world.

This book was released on 2021-06-18 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computers and mobile technologies have become widely adopted as sought-after tools in the field of education. The prevalence of technology in early childhood education (ECE) is increasing, and teachers, both pre-service and in-service, are using best practices to integrate tools effectively to improve teaching and learning within the field. Book excerpt: This paper targets schools, colleges, and departments of education (SCDEs), as well as other institutions involved in the preparation of early childhood education (ECE) teachers, regarding the advancement of the quality of early childhood teachers and caregivers. In order to begin framing the Association's position on ECE, and to formulate ways to meet the challenges confronting SCDEs in the preparation of quality teachers for young children, the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) convened a focus council, the Focus Council on Early Childhood Education, of ECE experts from member institutions. This paper outlines recommendations made by the focus council for the different constituents of the ECE field, including professionals working with young children, SCDEs, policymakers, and the private sector. The paper is organized into the following sections: (1) Background data on the status of early childhood education and early childhood teacher preparation programs; (2) Main principles or goals for early childhood education; (3) Assumptions that undergird early childhood teacher preparation programs; (4) Challenges and changing needs that call for program reforms, along with a series of recommendations that address the different challenges and needs; and (5) Summary of recommendations in response to the increasing accountability requirements for SCDEs, and recommendations for policy and decision makers in the public and private sectors. Book Educating Young Children with and Without Exceptionalities

Download or read book Educating Young Children with and Without Exceptionalities written by Festus E. Obiakor and published by Contemporary Perspectives in Special Education. This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early childhood education (ECE) has always been intertwined with the use of developmentally appropriate practice (DAP). To support excellence in ECE, it is critical to have the knowledge about individual children and child development principles combined with the knowledge of effective early learning practices. Effective early childhood education involves an interdisciplinary collaborative process that is influenced by many factors. We present these aforementioned realities in Educating Young Children With and Without Exceptionalities: New Perspectives. In addition, we argue that general and special educators need to focus on applying new knowledge to better address critical issues that advance the field of educator preparation and improve educational outcomes for young children. Early childhood research confirms the need for intensive intervention and remedial education--we need to avoid approaches that are "too little" or "too late." Also proven to yield positive results for children are practices familiar to early childhood educators. These practices include relationship-based teaching and learning; partnering with families; adapting teaching for children from different backgrounds and for individual children; active, meaningful, and connected learning; and smaller class sizes. Evidence of the benefits of these practices suggests that they should be extended more widely into the elementary grades.

Download or read book Early Childhood Educator Competencies written by University of California, Berkeley, Center for the Study of Child Care Employment and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, growing knowledge of the critical importance of early childhood development for lifelong learning and growth had led to increased calls for the professionalism of early childhood educators, including higher standards for their training and education. As part of this attention to professional development, many states are establishing sets of competencies for the early care and education (ECE) field, with the goal of assuring that all educators of young children have the necessary knowledge and skills to meet children's developmental needs. The Center for the Study of Child Care Employment was charged with conducting a three-stage project in 2007 on early childhood educator competencies to: (1) Conduct an extensive literature review to examine the current "state of the art" and best practices across the United States for developing such competencies; (2) Conduct a statewide input process to solicit feedback as broadly as possible from California's early care and education field on the appropriate structure and content for early childhood educator competencies; and (3) Prepare this report, reflecting input from California's ECE field. Reported findings include: (1) Concerned about the process by which competencies will be developed in California (how, and by whom), and about how they will be used; (2) Anticipated contrast between what new ECE competencies will potentially expect of early childhood educators, and the realities of the training opportunities that practitioners currently have; (3) Study participants want competencies to be developed as a living document, subject to periodic review and updating in order to stay current; and (4) Vision of development of revised and expanded ECE competencies as an opportunity for California to take national leadership in highlighting the central importance of educator competency in the areas of cultural diversity, dual language learning, and the care and education of children with special needs.

Book Early Childhood Education Educare Career Express ECE2

Download or read book Early Childhood Education Educare Career Express ECE2 written by Deborah Deibert and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a national shortage of highly qualified early childhood educators. For many early childhood educators, this career path begins with the Child Development Associate credential. Community colleges are well-positioned to award this credential and address the shortage of highly qualified early childhood educators. However, many students arrive at community colleges academically unprepared, with excessive work and family responsibilities. The purpose of my participatory action research study is to explore the impact of internships on early childhood education student attitudes towards persistence in their course of study. This study has the potential to impact strategies used with child development majors in the community college setting. Successful community college students who persist through their plan of study to graduate will experience the benefits that college completion brings. In addition to the interests of college completion, these students will enter the workforce or university setting with valuable work experience and professional credentials achieved in a supportive community. Both outcomes have the potential to positively affect the growth of the early childhood workforce. The findings of this study reveal that student interns placed in high-quality, early learning centers found support in the relationships with their mentor teachers, valuable experiences with the children in the rooms, and a new sense of self-efficacy when offered opportunities to participate in professional development activities, leading to persistence in their course of study.

Book Educating Early Childhood Educators

Download or read book Educating Early Childhood Educators written by Gina LeAnne Barili Peterson and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study examined the 23 California State University (CSU) campuses, to uncover and understand the infrastructure and content of CSU graduate programs that offer degree options in Early Childhood Education (ECE). Theoretically, master's level programs are designed to develop college instructors who will prepare tomorrow's ECE workforce. The findings suggest that although the CSU system provides a multitude of master's level programs, few specialize in Early Childhood Education. A specific emphasis was placed on the programs (N=7) that focused explicitly on the growth, development and education of typically developing children birth through age eight. Ultimately, programs were housed in various departments and colleges, and were found to have diverse coursework requirements. The implications for these findings suggest that there are uncertainties in how ECE educators are educated and trained to be effective teachers.
