  • Author : David Yetman
  • Publisher : University of Arizona Press
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9780816525416
  • Pages : 84 pages

Download or read book The Organ Pipe Cactus written by David Yetman and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinguished by its slender vertical branches, which resemble the tubes of a pipe organ, and growing to the imposing height of 15 to more than 30 feet, itÕs obvious how the organ pipe cactus got its name. In the United States, these spectacular and intriguing plants are found exclusively in a small area of the Sonoran Desert in the southwestern corner of Arizona. With a landscape marked by sharp, rocky slopes and daytime highs in the summer reaching 110 degrees Fahrenheit, the region is inhospitable for most ordinary life, whether plant or animal. But the organ pipe cactus is far from ordinary. Although it is the most common columnar cactus, it is so unusual in the United States that it is only one of three cacti to have a national preserve established to protect it. In this regard, it joins a select group of plantsÑincluding Joshua trees, redwoods, and sequoiasÑupon which that honor has been conferred. In this beautifully illustrated, large-format book, David Yetman provides an in-depth and comprehensive look at these intriguing and picturesque plants that most Americans will never have the opportunity to see. Chapters explore their ethnobotanical uses, their habitat, their distribution, and special conditions required for their germination, establishment, growth, and survival. Yetman also places the organ pipe in perspective as a member of a genus with at least twenty-three species, ranging from the prostrate Stenocereus eruca of Baja California to the 50-foot high giant S. chacalapensis of the coast of Oaxaca.

That was because I associated this particular term with delicious things to eat like succulent, juicy spareribs or succulent luscious fruit, fresh off a tree! But here was an experienced gardener talking about a plant, which he called a succulent? It did not look remotely edible at all! Cacti belong to the “Succulent Plants” family. Plants with green leaves that are left in the sun without water are going to flag and wilt within a few hours. They are going to die within a few days. However, mother nature has made some plant equivalents of camels, which can go for long periods without any water. These plants normally live in a hot and dry climate and they have managed to survive since the dawn of time. That is because they are able to adapt themselves to their environment. They are going to pass the dry season as leafless shrubs, seeds or as dry bulbs. Cactus as well as other succulent plants are capable of storing moisture, in their stems and leaves, especially when there is plenty of moisture in the atmosphere. This is so that they can get plenty of liquid available to them, when the atmosphere becomes dry and arid.

Book excerpt: A Beginner’s Guide to Cacti - How to Make a Cactus Garden Table of Contents Introduction Cactus Spines Choosing Your Cacti Growing Your Cacti Preparing Soil for Cactus Suitable Soil for Cactus Preparing Leaf Mold Potting Your Cactus Plant Watering Your Cactus Watering Methods Light spray During Summer Cactus Decaying? Sunlight Hibernation for Cactus Protecting Your Cactus in the Winter Planting Your Cactus Offsets How to grow Cacti from Cuttings Cactus as Food Diseases and pests Appendix Cactus clubs Author Bio Introduction For all those people who have confronted a prickly pear, at least once in their lives, cacti are boring spiny plants. Also, cactus plants have long been the subject of a superstition that any house, which has cactus growing in it is going to be filled up with strife and trouble and arguments. That is because of the spines of the cactus which are known as spikes promote ill feeling. There is something so odd about a cactus plant that it is often difficult until you grow them yourself to believe that these really belong to the plant kingdom. Historically, how many pioneer explorers of the desert areas in America saw them in the twilight and thought stories of monsters with their arms outstretched, and no heads, who turned into plants in the desert in the morning. No wonder, these giants which can grow up to 63 feet have always been the subject for legends. Even today, most of us are told tales about the cactus, which many of us half believe. Some of us have heard that cacti are poisonous. Other people are going to tell us that cacti flower only once in 100 years, and only when the area is subjected to rain. The first tale is totally and true. The second tale is also untrue because certain species of cacti will flower, almost every year, if given proper cultivation and care. Cactuses, also known as cacti belong to the family Opuntiaceae. Many of these plant varieties have lost true leaves, but they still have fluted and ribbed stems. The stems store water, and many of the desert varieties have very short growing time periods. Their periods of dormancy may be long, because many times, they have to go without water and rainfall for years, especially when they are growing in the Atacama Desert. Cactus originally are natives of the Americas, except for some species, which grow in Africa.

Book How to Make a Plant Love You

Download or read book How to Make a Plant Love You written by Summer Rayne Oakes and published by National Geographic Books. This book was released on 2019-07-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summer Rayne Oakes, an urban houseplant expert and environmental scientist, is the icon of wellness-minded millennials who want to bring nature indoors, according to a New York Times profile. Summer has managed to grow 1,000 houseplants in her Brooklyn apartment (and they're thriving!) Her secret? She approaches her relationships with plants as intentionally as if they were people. Everyone deserves to feel the inner peace that comes from taking care of greenery. Beyond the obvious benefits--beauty and cleaner air--there's a strong psychological benefit to nurturing plants as a path to mindfulness. They can reduce our stress level, lower our blood pressure, and improve our overall outlook. And they offer a rare opportunity to find joy by caring for another living being. When Summer Rayne Oakes moved to Brooklyn from the Pennsylvania countryside, she knew that bringing nature indoors was her only chance to stay sane. She found them by the side of the road, in long-forgotten window boxes, at farmers' markets, and in local garden shops. She found ways to shelve, hang, tuck, anchor, secure, and suspend them. She even installed a 150-foot expandable hose that connects to pipes under her kitchen sink, so she only has to spend about a half-hour a day tending to her plants--an activity that she describes as a "moving meditation." This is Summer's guidebook for cultivating an entirely new relationship with your plant children. Inside, you'll learn to: Pause for the flowers and greenery all around you, even the ones sprouting bravely between cracked pavement Trust that your apartment jungle offers you far more than pretty décor See the world from a plant's perspective, trading modern consumerism for sustainability Serve your chlorophyllic friends by learning to identify the right species for your home and to recreate their natural habitat (Bonus: your indoor garden won't die!) When we become plant parents, we also become better caretakers of ourselves, the people around us, and our planet. So, let's step inside the world of plants and discover how we can begin cultivating our own personal green space--in our homes, in our minds, and in our hearts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exploration of the explosive illegal trade in succulents and the passion that drives it Cacti and succulents are phenomenally popular worldwide among plant enthusiasts, despite being among the world’s most threatened species. The fervor driving the illegal trade in succulents might also be driving some species to extinction. Delving into the strange world of succulent collecting, The Cactus Hunters takes us to the heart of this conundrum: the mystery of how and why ardent lovers of these plants engage in their illicit trade. This is a world of alluring desires, where collectors and conservationists alike are animated by passions that at times exceed the limits of law. What inspires the desire for a plant? What kind of satisfaction does it promise? The answer, Jared D. Margulies suspects, might be traced through the roots and workings of the illegal succulent trade—an exploration that traverses the fields of botany and criminology, political ecology and human geography, and psychoanalysis. His globe-spanning inquiry leads Margulies from a spectacular series of succulent heists on a small island off the coast of Mexico to California law enforcement agents infiltrating a smuggling ring in South Korea, from scientists racing to discover new and rare species before poachers find them to a notorious Czech “cacto-explorer” who helped turn a landlocked European country into the epicenter of the illegal succulent trade. A heady blend of international intrigue, social theory, botanical lore, and ecological study, The Cactus Hunters offers complex insight into species extinction, conservation, and more-than-human care. Book excerpt: Table of Contents Introduction Introduction to Succulents The General Cultivation of Succulents and Cacti Temperature Air and Light Watering Soil Planting Your Succulents Growth from leaves Growing Your Plants through Cuttings Repotting and replanting Growing succulents through offsets Saving Your Cacti from Pests and Diseases Aphids Mealy bugs Thrips Red spiders Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction The moment you hear the word “cactus,” you immediately visualize an arid desert, with the poor lonesome cowboy riding away into the sunset on his trusty horse, singing “I am far away from home,” with a buzzard eyeing him greedily, and a cactus somewhere in the background, looming over him. If you have seen this in one spaghetti western, you have seen it in all… But cacti and succulents are just not prickly pears, and Opuntias not to be touched by Mowgli, while he is singing along with Baloo unless he wants a Paw full of spines and thorns. All over the world, people have finally woken up to the potential of cactus and succulent plants as indoor as well as outdoor beautifiers of surroundings, especially when they are planning to plant ornamental plants, which have adapted themselves down the centuries to every sort of condition, and they can survive. This book is for those people, who have decided to know more about cactuses and succulents. Man is an instinctive collector of things, from orchids to butterflies. Once he found that all over the world, he could get more than 500,000 different varieties of succulents and cacti, he decided to add these plants to his collection repertoire. That is the reason why botanists are so fascinated with the lifestyle of these living objects, so that they can see the different natural development and changes which take place with the passing of time during the growth cycle of these particular plants.
