Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of "culture" has provided theologians with a whole new realm of exploration. By the turn of the twentieth century and the beginning of this new milennium the subject of culture had presented itself to theologians and church leaders for vital consideration. As one of the world's leading theologians, Robert Jenson's eminent career has coincided with the pre-eminence of culture in theological and churchly discussion. Having described himself as a theologian of culture in his earliest works, culture continually informs Jenson's systematic theology, which in turn works its way out in countless cultural forms. In Rhyming Hope and History we explore the philiosophical and theological influences of Jenson's work and outline their vast and varied applications to the world of culture and the life of the church. For Jenson, the church is the cultural embodiment of the risen Christ in the fallen reality of our world. In a series of conversations between Jenson and leading thinkers, including G.W.F. Hegel, Jonathan Edwards, Wittgenstein, Richard H. Niebuhr, Kathryn Tanner, Paul Tillich, Nicholas Wolterstorff, Augustine, and Jeremy Begbie, we explore this creative and courageous proposal.

Book Rhymes for the Times with Life Lines

Download or read book Rhymes for the Times with Life Lines written by Simon Siewsaran and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting the Truths of the Bible in a Contemporary, Engaging Style With over 300 Inspirational Rhymes The author, Simon Siewsaran, is the Founder and Senior Pastor of the Everlasting Gospel Church (established in 1997), a vibrant community ministry, located at Enterprise, Trinidad. Pastor Siewsaran is also the host of "Don't Give Up," a popular radio broadcast that began in 2001 and is heard throughout Trinidad & Tobago and the southern Caribbean. His early years in ministry were primarily among delinquent youths, including drug addicts, and during this time was himself the target of numerous molestations from fellow villagers. Yet signs and wonders continue to follow this servant of God who has impacted thousands of lives in honour of the Kingdom. His effervescent, lyrical style of preaching endears him to both young and old; and his anointed ministry extends beyond his pastoral duties, most notably as the President of "Touch T&T Ministries," a para-church organization that conducts national events, including crusades, concerts and prayer assemblies. Pastor Siewsaran's missionary trips include the Holy Land - three occasions - Egypt, England, Holland, USA and the Caribbean islands of Antigua, Barbados and St. Lucia. In 1997 he received the title of Jerusalem Pilgrim from Israel's Ministry of Tourism. He is the husband of Johanna and the father of two daughters, Victoria Sarah and Gloria Elizabeth.

Book The Gospel According to Mother Goose

Download or read book The Gospel According to Mother Goose written by Mike Hammond and published by Courier Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The words on the cover of this book tend to encourage us to continue to read. There may be two things that cause this: the magnetism of the words or the mystery of such a title as "The Gospel According to Mother Goose." This may suggest that there is something spiritual about the book, even though the original intention of the writers of "Mother Goose" rhymes was quite different. The purpose of this book is to bring together some of the words and characters found in the "Mother Goose" rhymes and those found in the biblical stories. My hope is that each complements the other. As a child, you may or may not have heard the words of the "Mother Goose" rhymes or the stories from the Bible. The values and norms seen in each rhyme have similarities to those found in the stories of the Bible. There are six areas of ultimate concern which tend to relate to a child's greatest need: security. Those six areas are as follows: The Fall, The Fear, The Faith, The Food, The Following, and The Fate. After a consideration of each part of the title of this book, each of these six areas is discussed. Each rhyme discussed is used to support these areas. More specifically, there is a consideration of the characters, their circumstances, and the consequences. For each story from the Bible used to support these areas, there are some of the same considerations.

Book excerpt: If asked to list the greatest innovators of modern American poetry, few of us would think to include Jay-Z or Eminem in their number. And yet hip hop is the source of some of the most exciting developments in verse today. The media uproar in response to its controversial lyrical content has obscured hip hop's revolution of poetic craft and experience: Only in rap music can the beat of a song render poetic meter audible, allowing an MC's wordplay to move a club-full of eager listeners. Examining rap history's most memorable lyricists and their inimitable techniques, literary scholar Adam Bradley argues that we must understand rap as poetry or miss the vanguard of poetry today. Book of Rhymes explores America's least understood poets, unpacking their surprisingly complex craft, and according rap poetry the respect it deserves.

Book The Qur an and the Aramaic Gospel Traditions

Download or read book The Qur an and the Aramaic Gospel Traditions written by Emran El-Badawi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a study of related passages found in the Arabic Qur’ān and the Aramaic Gospels, i.e. the Gospels preserved in the Syriac and Christian Palestinian Aramaic dialects. It builds upon the work of traditional Muslim scholars, including al-Biqā‘ī (d. ca. 808/1460) and al-Suyūṭī (d. 911/1505), who wrote books examining connections between the Qur’ān on the one hand, and Biblical passages and Aramaic terminology on the other, as well as modern western scholars, including Sidney Griffith who argue that pre-Islamic Arabs accessed the Bible in Aramaic. The Qur’ān and the Aramaic Gospel Traditions examines the history of religious movements in the Middle East from 180-632 CE, explaining Islam as a response to the disunity of the Aramaic speaking churches. It then compares the Arabic text of the Qur’ān and the Aramaic text of the Gospels under four main themes: the prophets; the clergy; the divine; and the apocalypse. Among the findings of this book are that the articulator as well as audience of the Qur’ān were monotheistic in origin, probably bilingual, culturally sophisticated and accustomed to the theological debates that raged between the Aramaic speaking churches. Arguing that the Qur’ān’s teachings and ethics echo Jewish-Christian conservatism, this book will be of interest to students and scholars of Religion, History, and Literature.

Book Writing the Gospels

    Book Details:
  • Author : Catherine Sider Hamilton
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2019-02-21
  • ISBN : 0567679144
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Writing the Gospels written by Catherine Sider Hamilton and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book prominent biblical scholars engage with Francis Watson's most striking arguments on the creation of the gospels. Their contributions focus in particular on his argument for a fourfold gospel rather than four separate gospels, his argument against Q but for an early sayings collection, and on the larger landscape of Jesus studies, gospel reception and interpretation The contributors ask whether, and in what ways, Watson's reorientation of gospel studies is successful, and explore its implications for research. Leading scholars including Jens Schröter, Margaret Mitchell, Richard Bauckham and many others provide a close critical and creative engagement with Watson's work. More than merely a critical review of Watson's writing, this book carries forward his work with fresh treatments and provides an essential volume for students and scholars seeking to understand the landscape of gospel studies and to explore new directions within it.
