Book The Un Offensive Gospel of Jesus

Download or read book The Un Offensive Gospel of Jesus written by Jeremy Bouma and published by . This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is the Jesus we're showing? What is the Story we're telling? These honest questions sit at the heart of this punchy, provocative book. In his debut title, Jeremy seeks to drive a conversation in the Church about how we show Jesus and tell His hopeful Story. If Jesus and His Story are what people have been waiting for their whole lives, why are so many people leaving Him and avoiding His people? Jeremy helps us understand why this is happening and what Christians can do about it. Newly revised and filled with discussion questions, the (un)offensive gospel of Jesus sketches a fresh portrait of God's magical, revolutionary Story of Rescue and the good Jesus found in the Holy Scriptures. Through his own experience in the Church, conversations with friends, and an honest look at theology and the Bible, Jeremy explores how Jesus and His gospel are good, sweet news for all the world. Most of all, he helps us understand why both are more hopeful than many of us realize. ENDORSEMENTS: "Jeremy is a deep thinker; he's courageous enough to challenge some popular evangelicals and emergents today. Yet, this is not a screed: Jeremy loves the Church and has a passion for the ostracized and he tells us in this book that grace grinding is the not the way of Jesus and it is not the gospel Jesus preached." -Scot McKnight, Professor, Northern Seminary; Author, The Jesus Creed and The King Jesus Gospel "Jeremy had me at the title. With deep passion for the Church, a sharp awareness of the prevalent, hot, future-shaping emerging conversation, and the courage to slay a few sacred cows, he offers a compelling vision of Jesus and the Church's mission. Jeremy's debut book informs, disturbs, encourages, and challenges. Who is the Jesus we show to the world? What is the Story we tell? These two questions will never be the same for me."-John W. Frye, Pastor, Fellowship Covenant Church; Grand Rapids, MI; Author, Jesus the Pastor and Out of Print "While recognizing our fallen world with failing followers of Jesus, Jeremy paints a brilliant, honest, passionate and redeeming picture of the Christ who heals, speaks with authority and still changes the impossible. As we step back and gaze at this amazing portrait of a liberating magnetic Jesus I find good news, an (un)offensive Jesus, to whom I have too often shamefully been offensive."-Doug Fagerstrom, Former President, Grand Rapids Theological Seminary

Book excerpt: Have we minimized the message of the cross in an attempt to seem more relevant to an increasingly modern world? Instead of conforming to the image of Christ, have we tried to conform Christ to agree with our image, our lifestyle, and our culture? How does our understanding of truth and love affect our view of the Lord and ourselves? Does our life ultimately line up with the scripture? Do the ways we do our church line up with what Jesus had in mind when he established the church? Do we set the margins for how we live by the climate of our culture or from the scriptures?

Book Trapped by Offense

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dr. E. McDonald Wortham
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2011-06-07
  • ISBN : 1463413505
  • Pages : 105 pages

Download or read book Trapped by Offense written by Dr. E. McDonald Wortham and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the last day, the church will be a whore church made up of people who have been trapped in offenses for years but who have never repented and received Gods grace. Matthew 24:1012 says, And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. Offenses seem to be a sign of the coming of the Lord. In overwhelming numbers, Christians today are offended for one reason or another. God cant use an offended person. The church is filled with offended people who have been rendered useless. The progression of offense is: 1. Offense 2. Betrayal 3. Hatred 4. Deception by false prophets (usually those offended) 5. Love waxed cold Offense is Satans choice of weapon during the twenty-first century. Once youre offended, Satan has the advantage over you, unless you become offense-proof. Our churches must become a place where people from all walks of life can feel welcome. No longer can churches allow denominational barriers and doctrinal dogmas to separate people. Our churches must become offense-free zones if we are to do the work of true ministry.

Book The Scandal of the Gospels

Download or read book The Scandal of the Gospels written by David McCracken and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1994-01-06 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that the gospels are in an important sense "occasions for offense." The Jesus of the gospels is a scandal (skandalon, in the original Greek) and he is never more scandalous than when he is speaking in parables. Interpreters of the gospels over the centuries have consistently labored to domesticate the offense or to eliminate it entirely. David McCracken, focusing on parables, Matthew's narrative contexts, and the gospel of John, seeks to recover the gospels' sense of Jesus as skandalon. To this end, he enlists the help of Kierkegaard, the philosopher of offense, and to a lesser extent that of Bakhtin, both of whom prove to be surprisingly apt conversation partners for the evangelists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In life all of us feel the pain of being offended. All kinds of things could cause an offense. Sometimes the smallest of things can offend us. We feel hurt. Somebody said something that offended us. We did not receive the opportunity, the recognition, or the promotion that we thought we deserved. We get offended. Once we take offense, it begins to work inside us and ultimately affects us in more ways than we imagine. A person operating out of an unresolved offense can think, say, and behave in the most irrational and uncharacteristic ways. When this plays out in church life, among God’s people, we see some of the most saddening things happen! What does the Bible say about this common occurrence in life? How should we respond when we are offended? How do we get rid of the negative emotions that come when we are offended? In this simple little study, hopefully, we will gain answers to these questions and learn to live totally free of offense. Always live above the line of offense! Book Attack Evangelism

  • Author : Greg Koehn
  • Publisher : AuthorHouse
  • Release : 2014-04-01
  • ISBN : 149186964X
  • Pages : 369 pages

Download or read book Attack Evangelism written by Greg Koehn and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was originally written as a training manual for evangelism but then developed into a study of our salvation. The presentation of the gospel is simple so that even a child can understand it and believe it. But it is not enough to give a simple presentation, in order for us to defend the faith in this postmodern world, we need to understand the gospel and its implications for our world. Our Christian imperative is to make disciples of the people groups of the world beginning with where we are and then moving out to the uttermost parts of the world. Culture will only change when people change and they will change only when that change occurs from the inside out. To believe on the Lord Jesus Christ is to be born again, a person changed by the Spirit of God from the inside out. The Church is God's ordained institution on earth but the Church spends too much time on the inside, the time has come to get off our seat, onto our feet and into the street. In view of our postmodern world, passive evangelism is not the answer, it is time to attack.

Book Overcoming the Spirit of Offense

Download or read book Overcoming the Spirit of Offense written by Anita McCall and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overcoming the Spirit of Offense exposes how the spirit of offense has not only infiltrated the body of Christ but how it has damaged the bride and has kept her from fulfilling her destiny and purpose. Because of the invisible wounds that she has suffered, she walks without much power. The book helps the reader to be able to see and recognize how the spirit operates, and it teaches how to come in the opposite spirit called love in order to get free. It is fully equipped with scripture for validation and real-life situations and testimonies that help the reader with their own similar situations. There are testimonies that not only inspire the reader but also challenge them. A testimony of a young woman named Julia will leave the reader in awe of the Fathers heart and what He can do when we choose to love instead of being offended. This teaching has been used to minister to hurting pastors and prophets, drug addicts and broken women, and when they choose to forgive the offender, they are almost always completely healed, both physically and emotionally. It has been used to teach the unbeliever about the love of God, the price that Jesus paid, and how the enemy pottered them through offense. This is a teaching that bears fruit.

Book The Church and the Surprising Offense of God s Love Foreword by Mark Dever

Download or read book The Church and the Surprising Offense of God s Love Foreword by Mark Dever written by Jonathan Leeman and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2010-01-08 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the world speaks of "love," it often means unconditional acceptance. Many churches have adopted this mind-set in their practice of membership and discipline-if they have not done away with such structures entirely. "Yet God's love and God's gospel are different than what the world expects," writes Jonathan Leeman. They're centered in his character, which draws a clear boundary between what is holy and what is not. It's this line that the local church should represent in its member practices, because the careful exercise of such authority "is God's means for guarding the gospel, marking off a people, and thereby defining his love for the world." So how should churches receive and dismiss members? How should Christians view their submission to the church? Are there dangers in such submission? The Church and the Surprising Offense of God's Love responds with biblical, theological, and practical guidance-from both corporate and individual perspectives. It's a resource that will help pastors and their congregations upend worldly conceptions and recover a biblical understanding and practice of church authority.

Book The Offensive Gospel of the Cross

Download or read book The Offensive Gospel of the Cross written by Susan Avello and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-04-16 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Apostle Paul talked of "The Offense of the Gospel of Christ - the Finished Work." This book expounds on what changed Paul's life when he was told of the Gospel of Christ and dives in deep in regard to Law vs. Grace and the redeeming work of Christ on the cross. Pride in man would try and keep him from thinking that the work was complete and that he needed to "do" something to earn or keep his newly found redemption, making it an offense to see that it is already a done deal. Christ paid the supreme price.
