Download or read book Gordon Newton written by Gordon Newton and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999, Detroit-area collector James F. Duffy Jr. gave the Detroit Institute of Arts a vast collection of works on paper by Gordon Newton. This gift included over five hundred drawings, forty sketchbooks and sketchpads, two paintings, twelve pieces of sculpture, and folder after folder of archival materials related to the works of art and the artist. These gifts were combined with other works by Gordon Newton that the museum already owned to form an exhibition of the artist's work that spanned over three decades. Many of the works are included in this text, which highlights the breadth of Gordon Newton's art and explores the variety of themes and mediums he has used. Gordon Newton: Selections from the James F. Duffy Jr. Gift provides a rare opportunity to study an artist's work over an extended period of time, from his earliest black-and-white abstract drawings to the heavily layered, richly colored figurative images made within the past decade. Biographical information on Newton, as well as essays that focus on the style of his work and the historical and cultural artistic events shaping the times, is combined with 150 illustrations to make this an important study not only of a major artist, but of the creative process in general. Gordon Newton's art of the last thirty years is complex, beautiful, unpredictable, and always provocative. The essays in this book provide an in-depth look at selected works from the James F. Duffy gift.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the fullness of the Baptist experience in Christian higher education is explored, charted, and analyzed. Beginning with the establishment in 1756 of the Academy and reaching to the present the author explores the need for Baptists to pursue education and the types of schools they founded. Included are colleges, universities, manual labor schools, literary and theological institutions, theological schools, and bible colleges. Special attention is given to women and higher education and the Black Baptist achievements. Details are provided about what makes a Baptist school Baptist: charters, trustees, presidents, support, church accountability. Chapters at the end of the typological and chronological narratives ponder the meaning of denominational education at present, with suggestions about the future of faith-based institutions and the failure of contemporary literature to attend properly to Baptist idiosyncrasies.

Book Newton s Physics and the Conceptual Structure of the Scientific Revolution

Download or read book Newton s Physics and the Conceptual Structure of the Scientific Revolution written by Z. Bechler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three events, which happened all within the same week some ten years ago, set me on the track which the book describes. The first was a reading of Emile Meyerson works in the course of a prolonged research on Einstein's relativity theory, which sent me back to Meyerson's Ident ity and Reality, where I read and reread the striking chapter on "Ir rationality". In my earlier researches into the origins of French Conven tionalism I came to know similar views, all apparently deriving from Emile Boutroux's doctoral thesis of 1874 De fa contingence des lois de la nature and his notes of the 1892-3 course he taught at the Sorbonne De ['idee de fa loi naturelle dans la science et la philosophie contempo raines. But never before was the full effect of the argument so suddenly clear as when I read Meyerson. On the same week I read, by sheer accident, Ernest Moody's two parts paper in the JHIof 1951, "Galileo and Avempace". Put near Meyerson's thesis, what Moody argued was a striking confirmation: it was the sheer irrationality of the Platonic tradition, leading from A vem pace to Galileo, which was the working conceptual force behind the notion of a non-appearing nature, active all the time but always sub merged, as it is embodied in the concept of void and motion in it

Book The Day the Devils Dropped In

Download or read book The Day the Devils Dropped In written by Neil Barber and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2008-10-17 with total page 659 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This WWII history presents a vivid chronicle of the British Army’s 9th Parachute Battalion and their operations in Normandy based on survivor interviews. The first hours and days following the Allied invasion of Normandy were perhaps the most crucial moment of the Second World War. The Day The Devils Dropped In examines the pivotal role played by the 9th Battalion of the Parachute Regiment in the first week of the landings. These brave British soldiers were tasked with neutralizing the mighty Merville Battery, and capturing Le Plein and the Chateau St. Côme on the Breville Ridge. Failure by to achieve any of these objectives could have meant disaster for Operation Overlord—and catastrophe for the Allied war effort. In his quest to uncover what transpired in the early days of the landings, historian Neil Barber tracked down and interviewed surviving participants in the operation. In The Day the Devils Dropped In, he presents the full story, largely in the very words of those who lived through the experience. Enhanced by wartime photographs throughout, this revealing chronicle is a fine tribute to those whose contribution must never be forgotten.

Book excerpt: Gordon could not take his eyes off her as she neared. 'Hello, Harry, how are you?' Ruby said, smiling prettily as she passed. 'Just fine, Ruby, nice to see you.' 'Nice to see you, too, Harry.' 'Who is that beauty?' Gordon asked. He was standing in the middle of the sidewalk gawking after Ruby. 'I'd like to whisper sweet nothings in her ears until honey dripped from her lips.' 'Sure you would. Wouldn't every stud in town? She's Ruby Cole, Doctor Cole's daughter.'Adultery, divorce, greed, betrayal, hatred and revenge are sins and indiscretions that are common among two families, the Coles and Hamricks, who are brought together by destiny.Stick, also known as Gordon Hamrick, blames God for the loss of his leg and turns away from him, vowing never to ask God for anything again. He instead becomes determined to make a good life for himself, and by himself, in spite of his handicap. He is plagued by an inward fear to trust God but refuses to confront it, and continues in his pursuit of misguided happiness through bootlegging, drinking, gambling, and adultery. Each of his successes in life, both legal and illegal, is followed by tragedy and loss. It is only by the Grace of God and the love and help of his wife, Ruby that he survives. 'Dingler has painted a backdrop so utterly realistic, down to the minutest detail, that the reader gets lost in an America long since past.' Lynn Gerlach, All Write! Communication consultant

Book The Complete Roster and Service Records of Lee s Army of Northern Virginia during the Overland Campaign

Download or read book The Complete Roster and Service Records of Lee s Army of Northern Virginia during the Overland Campaign written by Alfred C. Young III and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2019-02-13 with total page 5266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred C. Young III’s Complete Roster and Service Records of Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia during the Overland Campaign is the first compilation of the entire roster and service records for all the various units that composed Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia during the 1864 Overland Campaign. It is the ultimate reference guide to the more than 120,000 soldiers who served with Lee in Virginia as he led his army into a series of battles against Union General Ulysses S. Grant. While there are specific guides to several of Lee’s units, Young’s work is the first comprehensive companion that features data on all of the men who served under the general during this campaign. Using an array of primary source material, from official Confederate records to southern newspapers, Young provides the enlistment and unit data for each soldier as well as a concise history of their service, including records on their rank, time served, promotion, hospitalization, wounds, capture, desertion, absence without leave, furloughs, and death. An essential archive for both genealogists and Civil War scholars, the Complete Roster and Service Records of Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia during the Overland Campaign is the most wide-ranging catalog in existence of each soldier’s record during the campaign. This vast array of research is available only as an e-book, enabling ease of search and annotation.
