Book The Art of Gordon Crosby

Download or read book The Art of Gordon Crosby written by Peter Garnier and published by Herridge & Sons. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1978 by Hamlyn, this book, the only one to cover the life and work of the celebrated automotive and motor racing artist F. Gordon Crosby, has been difficult to obtain for many years. Crosby's work, however, has become more well known in the meantime, and original pieces are sold for increasingly high prices. His most productive period was the 1920s and 1930s, when he worked for Britain's leading automotive weekly, The Autocar. Working in media from charcoal to oils, his subjects ranged over motor racing action, caricatures, cartoons, technical illustrations, detailed cutaway drawings and depictions of fast cars at speed, always with a special sense of motion and excitement.

Book The Diocese of Carlisle 1814 1855

Download or read book The Diocese of Carlisle 1814 1855 written by Church of England. Diocese of Carlisle and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2015 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The notebooks of bishops of Carlisle reveal a wealth of detail concerning clerical life at the time. The volume presents three nineteenth-century manuscripts originally created for the use of bishops of Carlisle: Walter Fletcher's "Diocesan Book", written between 1814 and 1845, and Bishop Hugh Percy's two parish notebooks, compiled between 1828 and 1855. Based on visitations, and on articles of enquiry now lost, they add to a growing body of knowledge relating to the condition of the Church in the first half of the nineteenth century, providing a unique record of livings in the Carlisle diocese prior to its expansion in 1856. In particular, they illuminate the concerns of two significant clerical figures. In 1814 the newly installed chancellor, Walter Fletcher, set about recordinghis primary visitation, updating his notes frequently until the year before his death in 1846. In 1828 the newly consecrated bishop, Hugh Percy, created his own diocesan record, utilising Fletcher's material while adding matter of his own. The popularity of Anglican ritualism since the advent of Tractarianism has made it commonplace for the Georgian Church to be viewed with a certain amount of disdain. The notebooks allow us a more objective view ofthe period. Fletcher's notes on the 130 churches he visited are particularly valuable in presenting a diligent, hard-working clergyman, loyal to the Tory high-church traditions into which he had been born, with a vision for the diocese which, above all, was one of orderliness and obedience to canon law. The documents are presented here with introduction and notes. Dr Jane Platt is an honorary researcher in history at Lancaster University.

  • Author : Issaquah Historical Society

Download or read book Issaquah Washington written by Issaquah Historical Society and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2002-11-01 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporated as Gilman in 1892, Issaquah was among the earliest communities settled on the east side of Lake Washington. By 1900, immigrants and newcomers were flooding into the town now known as Issaquah to work the mines, mill lumber, and establish farms and businesses. Though the town's growth dwindled with the coal market in the 1920s, families first attracted by the area's business opportunities stayed because they loved the close-knit community. In 1940 the first bridge across Lake Washington heralded a new era of growth, bringing Issaquah within an hour's drive of Seattle. By the time Interstate 90 came through town in the early 1970s, many trademarks of the small town were fading. This collection of photographs, many never before published, illustrates Issaquah's heyday of mining and logging, its quiet years as a rural community, and its recent transformation into a thriving city. Included are scenes of local events such as the annual Issaquah rodeo, the Squak Valley Hot Shots musical group, and the Issaquah Skyport air show. The deconstruction of architectural symbols such as the Issaquah high trestle and an old pioneer home are also documented.

Book The Other Philadelphia Story

Download or read book The Other Philadelphia Story written by Ram A. Cnaan and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2010-11-24 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For people living in U.S. cities, social services come not only from the government but increasingly also from local religious communities. Ever since the Clinton administration's welfare reform, faith-based institutions, and especially congregations, have been allowed to bid for federal funds for their programs. In The Other Philadelphia Story, drawing on the first-ever census of congregations in any American city, Ram Cnaan and his colleagues provide an authoritative account of the functioning of congregations, their involvement in social services, and their support of other charitable organizations. An in-depth study of 1,392 congregations in Philadelphia, the book illuminates how these groups function as community hubs where members and neighbors alike gather throughout the week. Cnaan's findings show that almost every assembly of parishioners emphasizes caring for others, even if the help is modest. Thus American congregations uphold an implicit but strong norm of social responsibility and work to improve the quality of life for members and nonmembers alike. Many of the problems associated with urban life persist in the face of governmental inaction, and the burden of responsibility cannot be shouldered entirely by congregations. However, in a city such as Philadelphia, where half the residents are regular attenders of religious congregations, hopes for urban improvement are largely to be found in these local groups. Special focus is given in the book to kinds of care that often go unnoticed: volunteerism, provision of refuge, and informal assistance to community members in need. All told, Cnaan asserts, congregations are an essential component of Philadelphia's civil society. Without them, the quality of life would deteriorate immeasurably.
