Book excerpt: Robert H. Mohlenbrock provides a definitive account of the pokeweed, four-o'clock, carpetweed, cactus, purslane, goosefoot, pigweed, and pink families in Illinois. Flowering Plants: Pokeweeds, Four-o’clocks, Carpetweeds, Cacti, Purslanes, Goosefoots, Pigweeds, and Pinks is the fifteenth volume of the Illustrated Flora of Illinois series and the ninth devoted to dicots, or plants that have two seed-leaves, or cotyledons, upon germination. Each of the 141 plants is beautifully illustrated by Paul W. Nelson. Nelson shows the full habitat of the plant and close-ups of various vegetative and reproductive structures that are crucial for the identification of individual species. Each illustration includes detailed drawings of the flowers, fruits, and seeds of the plant covered. Mohlenbrock provides a complete description of each species as well as a discussion of the nomenclature and habitats, and his fifty-three years of experience enable him to present little-known diagnostic features for many species. Range maps show the county distribution of each species in Illinois. Mohlenbrock includes a statement giving the overall range of each species in the United States as well as a detailed key for the identification of the species. Flowering Plants contains many plants whose obscure flower parts make them exceedingly difficult to identify. The close-up illustrations of these parts will aid the user of the book immensely in identification of the species. Included are several species previously unknown in Illinois. New illustrations, which include detailed drawings of the flowers, fruits, and seeds are presented for each species covered in this book. Mohlenbrock’s fifty-three years of experience enable him to present little-known diagnostic features for many species.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wonderful guide to finding and using these natural ingredients—for teas, cooking, and more. Exquisitely illustrated with full-color paintings of all the plants and herbs in the book, Edible Wild Plants & Herbs is both a cookbook and a field guide to the identification and use of foodstuffs from the wild. There are almost four hundred recipes covering nearly one hundred different plant varieties, and the illustrations—drawn from life by a leading botanical artist—show the edible parts of the plants at their peak time for picking. In addition, there is a calendar indicating what plants to look for at each season of the year, and information on where the plants are found and how to identify them. Covering plants from dandelion and sorrel to sea beet and samphire, this is both a cookbook and a field guide to the identification and use of foodstuffs from the wild. In the past, the home kitchen provided a family with all its medicines and cosmetics as well as its food, wine, pickles, and preserves. Our ancestors were resourceful and imaginative and very much in tune with nature; this book recaptures their harmonious, sustainable way of life by setting down for the modern reader all that knowledge and lore, plus recipes for soups, sauces, main dishes, salads, pickles, jams, and sorbets, as well as teas, syrups and lotions. Note to the reader: This is a fully revised and updated edition of the book previously published as All Good Things Around Us, and includes new recipes and information.

Book Vegetable Literacy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Deborah Madison
  • Publisher : Ten Speed Press
  • Release : 2013-03-12
  • ISBN : 1607741911
  • Pages : 418 pages

Download or read book Vegetable Literacy written by Deborah Madison and published by Ten Speed Press. This book was released on 2013-03-12 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her latest cookbook, Deborah Madison, America's leading authority on vegetarian cooking and author of Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone, reveals the surprising relationships between vegetables, edible flowers, and herbs within the same botanical families, and how understanding these connections can help home cooks see everyday vegetables in new light. For over three decades, Deborah Madison has been at the vanguard of the vegetarian cooking movement, authoring classic books on the subject and emboldening millions of readers to cook simple, elegant, plant-based food. This groundbreaking new cookbook is Madison’s crowning achievement: a celebration of the diversity of the plant kingdom, and an exploration of the fascinating relationships between vegetables, edible flowers, herbs, and familiar wild plants within the same botanical families. Destined to become the new standard reference for cooking vegetables, Vegetable Literacy shows cooks that, because of their shared characteristics, vegetables within the same family can be used interchangeably in cooking. It presents an entirely new way of looking at vegetables, drawing on Madison’s deep knowledge of cooking, gardening, and botany. For example, knowing that dill, chervil, cumin, parsley, coriander, anise, lovage, and caraway come from the umbellifer family makes it clear why they’re such good matches for carrots, also a member of that family. With more than 300 classic and exquisitely simple recipes, Madison brings this wealth of information together in dishes that highlight a world of complementary flavors. Griddled Artichokes with Tarragon Mayonnaise, Tomato Soup and Cilantro with Black Quinoa, Tuscan Kale Salad with Slivered Brussels Sprouts and Sesame Dressing, Kohlrabi Slaw with Frizzy Mustard Greens, and Fresh Peas with Sage on Baked Ricotta showcase combinations that are simultaneously familiar and revelatory. Inspiring improvisation in the kitchen and curiosity in the garden, Vegetable Literacy—an unparalleled look at culinary vegetables and plants—will forever change the way we eat and cook.

Book excerpt: In the seventh of the River Cottage Handbook series, John Wright explores the culinary delights of the British hedgerow. Hedgerows, moors, meadows and woods - these hold a veritable feast for the forager. In this hugely informative and witty handbook, John Wright reveals how to spot the free and delicious pickings to be found in the British countryside, and how to prepare and cook them. First John touches on the basics for the hedgerow forager, with an introduction to conservation, safety, the law, and all the equipment that you may need. Next he guides you through the tasty edible species to be found. Each one is accompanied by photographs for identification, along with their conservation status, habitat, distribution, season, taste, texture and cooking methods - not forgetting, of course, some fascinating asides and diversions about their taxonomy and history. Fifty species are covered, including bilberries, blackberries, raspberries, common mallow, dandelions, hedge garlic, horseradish, pignuts, nettles, sloes, sweet chestnuts, water mint, bulrushes and wild cherries. After this there is a section describing the poisonous species to steer clear of, with identifying photographs as well as warnings about nasty 'lookalikes'. Finally, there are thirty delicious recipes to show how you can make the most of your (edible) findings. Introduced by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, Hedgerow is an indispensable household reference, and an essential book to have by your side for every trip into the countryside.

The new edition is far more comprehensive than the original edition, and the main changes are as follows: Covers 800 additional species Many of the photographs have been replaced and the total number of images is now over 3200. The photos are presented in a uniform alignment for ease of comparison between species. Size bars are added below each image showing average forewing length. Taxonomy and nomenclature conform to the latest checklist (but old Bradley numbers are still included) Maps included for every species for the first time. Covers all of the British Isles (Great Britain, Ireland and the Isle of Man) plus the Channel Islands. Excludes butterflies and caterpillars to make room for much greater coverage of true moths.
