Book excerpt: "Molly Ivins, Texas columnist and wry observer of American culture, called 1968 'the year everything happened.' 1968 finds America engulfed in political and racial turmoil, assassinations, and a war seemingly without end. The year finds Tom Windham trying to deal with a few of life's basics - love, death, God, and sex. A sophomore at a conservative university in Dallas and the veteran of an upbringing in a small East Texas town, Tom sits uncomfortably on the cusp of adulthood. He is joined there by his roommate Brandeis. Along with the young women in their lives, their college friends, and their families, they experience the joys, struggles and tragedies of the year on a human scale. While the events of the operatic year keep intervening, changes in American attitudes toward sex, race, women, war and religion are also reflected in Wild Goose Moon"--Publisher description.

  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book Moon written by Edgar Williams and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2014-06-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long before a rocket hit the Man in the Moon in the eye in Georges Méliès’s early film Le Voyage dans la Lune, the earth’s lone satellite had entranced humans. We have worshipped it as a deity, believed it to cause madness, used it as a means of organizing time, and we now know that it manipulates the tides—our understanding of the moon continues to evolve. Following the moon from its origins to its rich cultural resonance in literature, art, religion, and politics, Moon provides a comprehensive account of the significance of our lunar companion. Edgar Williams explores the interdependence of the Earth and the moon, not only the possibility that life on Earth would not be viable without the moon, but also the way it has embedded itself in culture. In addition to delving into roles the moon has played in literature from science fiction and comics to poetry, he examines how Elizabeth I was worshipped as the moon goddess Diana, the moon’s place in folklore and astrology, and humanity’s long-standing dream of inhabiting its surface. Filled with entertaining anecdotes, this book is the kind of succinct, witty, and informative look at everything lunar that only comes around once in a blue moon.

Book Muskekowuck Athinuwick

    Book Details:
  • Author : Victor P. Lytwyn
  • Publisher : Univ. of Manitoba Press
  • Release : 2002-03-06
  • ISBN : 0887550525
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Muskekowuck Athinuwick written by Victor P. Lytwyn and published by Univ. of Manitoba Press. This book was released on 2002-03-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The original people of the Hudson Bay lowlands, often known as the Lowland Cree and known to themselves as Muskekowuck Athinuwick, were among the first Aboriginal peoples in northwestern North America to come into contact with Europeans. This book challenges long-held misconceptions about the Lowland Cree, and illustrates how historians have often misunderstood the role and resourcefulness of Aboriginal peoples during the fur-trade era. Although their own oral histories tell that the Lowland Cree have lived in the region for thousands of years, many historians have portrayed the Lowland Cree as relative newcomers who were dependent on the Hudson's Bay Company fur-traders by the 1700s. Historical geographer Victor Lytwyn shows instead that the Lowland Cree had a well-established traditional society that, far from being dependent on Europeans, was instrumental in the survival of traders throughout the network of HBC forts during the 18th and 19th centuries.
