Book excerpt: Round things like pebbles and puddles and marbles and bubbles remind Little Goose of something, but he can't remember what it is. So he sets off on a journey in order to recall the special feeling he gets when he sees baskets and buckets and balls that roll. But Turtle's round rock isn't quite right, and neither are the flies that buzz 'round Frog's head, nor Mouse's round house, deep down in a hole. Only when he returns home does Little Goose remember what makes him feel cozy and comfy, and happy, too-: -that most special place within the soft circle of his mama's wings. This timeless tale of coming home to a mother's love will ring true with explorers of all ages. Reviews“Apple’s full-bleed colored-pencil illustrations add appropriate warmth and gentleness to Mraz’s fable…”—Kirkus Reviews

Book excerpt: “Papa Goose is destined to become a classic. This book has everything in it I love: great animals beautifully portrayed as individuals; cool science; drama, discovery, and personal transformation.” —Sy Montgomery, author of Birdology and The Soul of An Octopus The charming true story of one man’s journey to raise seven goslings in the name of science. In Papa Goose, Michael Quetting shares the hilarious and moving true story of how he became a father to seven rambunctious goslings—and the surprising things he learned along the way. Starting right at the beginning, with the eggs, his journey takes him from the incubator all the way to the airstrip, where he must attempt to teach the geese to fly as part of an ambitious scientific research initiative for the Max Planck Institute for Ornithology, which tracks animal migrations around the world. For the next eleven months, we follow the newly minted dad as he takes the goslings on daily swims in the lake, tracks them down when they go astray, and watches their personalities develop: feisty, churlish, and lovable. Packed with charm and humor, Papa Goose quickly draws us into the adventure as Gloria, Nemo, and the rest of the crew conquer land, water, and air.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The western Canada goose (Branta canadensis moffitti) was divided into a Rocky Mountain population (RMP) and a Pacific population (PP) on the basis of band recovery programs examined in this study and recovery data from other investigators. Habitat information provided a base line for evaluating future changes in nesting, molting, and wintering areas. Topics covered in the discussion of breeding biology are nesting chronology, spring population composition, breeding age, clutch size, nesting success, artificial nesting structures, and gosling survival. Some management recommendations include the refinement and standardization of spring and winter aerial surveys, and more accurate age and sex determinations when geese are banded and color-marked.

Book The Wild Goose

    Book Details:
  • Author : Mori Ogai
  • Publisher : University of Michigan Press
  • Release : 2020-08-06
  • ISBN : 0472901419
  • Pages : 181 pages

Download or read book The Wild Goose written by Mori Ogai and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mori Ōgai (1862–1922), one of the giants of modern Japanese literature, wrote The Wild Goose at the turn of the century. Set in the early 1880s, it was, for contemporary readers, a nostalgic return to a time when the nation was embarking on an era of dramatic change. Ōgai’s narrator is a middle-aged man reminiscing about an unconsummated affair, dating to his student days, between his classmate and a young woman kept by a moneylender. At a time when writers tended to depict modern, alienated male intellectuals, the characters of The Wild Goose are diverse, including not only students preparing for a privileged intellectual life and members of the plebeian classes who provide services to them, but also a pair of highly developed female characters. The author’s sympathetic and penetrating portrayal of the dilemmas and frustrations faced by women in this early period of Japan’s modernization makes the story of particular interest to readers today. Ōgai was not only a prolific and popular writer, but also a protean figure in early modern Japan: critic, translator, physician, military officer, and eventually Japan’s Surgeon General. His rigorous and broad education included the Chinese classics as well as Dutch and German; he gained admittance to the Medical School of Tokyo Imperial University at the age of only fifteen. Once established as a military physician, he was sent to Germany for four years to study aspects of European medicine still unfamiliar to the Japanese. Upon his return, he produced his first works of fiction and translations of English and European literature. Ōgai’s writing is extolled for its unparalleled style and psychological insight, nowhere better demonstrated than in The Wild Goose.
