Book excerpt: Handwritten letter from an Ohio miner to family back home describing his views on and experiences in California. He begins by saying that he "never had beter [sic] health in my life," and that he, and perhaps his brother, Jacob are doing "middling good" with their claims. Despite this, he advises that those "young men in ohio...that would like to come to california but...have a good way of making a living to stay home." He also presumes that these selfsame boys are all "cowards [and] are afraid of those large plains or deserts or those large waters." He then describes his two experiences with Indians, both of which involve stolen livestock and a dramatic chase, followed by a list of current prices of foodstuffs. Cox then says that he visited the "Sacrymento [sic] valey [sic]" and "sacrymento [sic] citty [sic]...a handsome little town but their [sic] is a grate [sic] deal of murdering and rascality going on their [sic]." To prove this point, he describes a series of graphic homicides and their punishments which took place six miles north of Sacramento. Cox concludes with a story of an incident with a dam's placement that resulted in him and some other men paying $50 and owing labor for the building of a dam so that they would not face tougher charges. Written in a Gregory's Express Letter Book (13 x 8 cm) with 29 blank pages at the end.
