The plane's design benefited from research work by its builder, the brilliant and sometimes mercurial Howard Hughes. Inspired by an experimental aircraft he had created known as the DX-2, Hughes' XF-11 was a twin-engine, twin-boom, tricycle gear monoplane that featured a pressurized nacelle for its crew and 28-cylinder engines with contra-rotating props. Hughes piloted the XF-11 on its maiden flight, and was nearly killed when one of the props reversed pitch, and the plane crashed. Hughes recovered and piloted a second prototype, this one outfitted with conventional props, but the Air Force had already made up its mind: the XF-11 would never enter service. Like the P-51, it was designed by North American's brilliant engineer, Edgar Schmued. The F-82 utilized two extended P-51 fuselages, mounted to a newly- designed center wing and tail. The plane incorporated new propeller assemblies and a unique, four-wheel landing gear. In short, while the plane would be cosmetically similar to the Mustang, in reality it was an entirely new beast. The F-82 wasn¿t ready before WWII ended, but the program escaped cancellation, and planes entered operational service in 1948. The F-82 became the last piston- powered fighter ordered by the USAF. It flew as an escort for SAC B-29s, and with distinction as a night fighter in Korea. It was retired in 1953. Book excerpt: Stearman's Kaydet biplane first flew in 1934, and in 1935 the U.S. Navy acquired the aircraft for use as trainers. Within a year the U.S. Army Air Corps followed suit, buying 26 of the airplanes from Boeing (which had acquired Stearman in 1934). Designated the "Model 75," the Army dubbed the two-seat plane the PT-13 and the Navy the NS. With war looming on the horizon, the need for trainers became pronounced; orders in 1940 topped 3500 airframes. By conflict's end in 1945, over 10,000 were built. The Kaydets were simple, rugged aircraft equipped with a radial engine, fabric-covered wooden wings, and single-leg landing gear. The fuselage, which was also fabric-covered, was built of steel. Most models were equipped with either the Lycoming R-680 (PT-13) or Continental R-670 (PT-17) engine, producing a top speed of 124 mph with a 505-mile range. A 255-hp model received the designation PT-18. The Kaydet continued to fly in the post-WWII era as a trainer and cropduster. Approximately 1,000 "Stearmans" are still in service in the present day. Originally created during WWII by the U.S. Navy and Army Air Forces, this pilot manual was standard issue to all cadets. It is reproduced here in its entirety.

The Tiger was originally conceived as an upgrade of the F9F Cougar. It eventually morphed into a new design, that incorporated the area rule to enable cruising speeds up to 1.1 Mach. The prototype flew in 1954, and carrier trials commenced in 1956. Eventually seven squadrons flew F11Fs. Hampered by maintenance issues affiliated with the J65 engine, and the fact that the Vought Crusader was clearly superior, the Tiger had a short service life. It was withdrawn from carrier duty after four years, in 1961. Only 199 were built. The remaining Tigers flew in a training capacity, and the Blue Angels continued to fly them for over a decade, 1957-1969.
