Book excerpt: Nationalism, nation-building and 'defensive modernisation' were the main themes of the 'cultural revolution' underpinning the totalitarian and secular regimes of Ataturk and Reza Shah which replaced the traditional Qajar state of Iran and the long-declining Ottoman Empire. The authors trace the emergence of Ataturk and Reza Shah through the constitutional revolutions in Iran and the Ottoman Empire and the introduction of European social models, the establishment of dictatorship and of secularist reforms resulting in both cases in totalitarian, nationalist, and quasi-westernised states, and the personality cult of the leader. The legacy of both was a chasm between the elite and the masses and provided the seeding of an Islamic mass-movement.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collection of short stories gives the reader an insight into the Arab world with all its peculiarities and attractions. The author found the themes of the stories on her journeys in Morocco in the period from 2013 to 2018. In her book, she managed to perfectly capture the atmosphere of the various places she visited, as well as the types of people she met. Thus, the reader can get to know the crowd in a big city with its hidden places, as well as the endless and powerful Sahara desert and its inhabitants. Witty stories that are easy to read encourage the reader to think about the differences between the two cultures, about modern way of life in the Western world and his comparison with Arabic world. Pavla Gambiraza This is a story of life reflected in an amazing mosaic of colourful experiences. It is hard to say anything about what these pages hold without the risk of revealing too much and ruining the surprise. This book is not only about that surreal African country. It is about the warmth of human nature, leaps and depths of faith, ethereal strings that connect us all, bringing us to the same primordial truth whoever we may be, and from wherever we may come. This is a book you will never forget. So, sit back and enjoy, and welcome to Morocco! Snježana Djordjić, Profis d.d.o

Book excerpt: Millie Elizabeth Monroe McKeever was fondly known to family and friends as Lizzy. She grew up during the trials and tribulations of a divided America during the 1860s. She was thrown into adulthood with the tragic loss of her mother and was transformed into a woman destined to carry a torch, from the Underground Railroad to women’s suffrage. Always one to take on any quest, Lizzy found the words written by her great-grandmother nearly sixty years earlier, deep in a cedar chest. Those words ignited a drive in her that transcended into the lives of generations to come. Presidents would come and go. Heroes would have their day. Speeches and declarations would be made across the nation. But Lizzy’s journey would be more personal, with a passion for country and family. The costs mounted to the point of breaking, but she did not bend. Lizzy gave all she could, and some would argue she gave too much. But to Lizzy, nothing was too much compared to fulfilling the promise made to her great-grandmother. Her word meant everything to Lizzy, and in the end, it was her word that would change history.

  • Author : Adam Geczy
  • Publisher : A&C Black
  • Release : 2013-08-15

Download or read book Fashion and Orientalism written by Adam Geczy and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-08-15 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Orientalism is a central factor within the fashion system, both subtle and overt. In this groundbreaking book, the author shows the extent of the influence that the Orient had, and continues to have, on fashion. Our concept of Western fashion is unthinkable without it, whether in terms of the growth of the cotton industry or of garments we take for granted, such as the dressing gown. From pre-modern to contemporary times, this book demonstrates that, in the realms of fashion, the Orient is not simply a construction or a fascination of the imperial West with its eastern other. Rather, it reveals the extent of cross-pollination, exchange and multiple translation that has taken place between East and West for the last 500 years. Exploring topics including Chinoiserie, masquerade, bohemianism, Japonisme, the "de-Orientalization" of the Orient, perfume and the birth of couture, Fashion and Orientalism is an essential read for students and scholars of fashion, cultural studies and history.

Book Darling Monster

Download or read book Darling Monster written by Diana Cooper and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2014-08-14 with total page 962 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An English aristocrat’s WWII letters “illuminate British history . . . [and] offer an indelible portrait of an extraordinary woman and her vanished world.”(Kirkus Reviews) Aristocrat, socialite, actress and wife of Duff Cooper, Churchill's wartime Minister for Information, later Ambassador to France and Viscount Norwich, Diana Cooper was also an inveterate letter-writer. Gathered here, her missives to her only son John Julius Norwich during the Second World War and its aftermath provide a vivid picture of the age and its personalities, and a woman of great intelligence, happiest on her country smallholding but able to cope with the demands on a politician's wife. "While Darling Monster is a showcase of Diana’s debonair wit, it is also a unique chronicle of wartime Britain. Her vivid descriptions, the sense of bravery in the face of impending doom, make these letters the kind of primary source material historians drool over.” —The Guardian “Cooper is always quick with a turn of phrase, and the collection reminds us of a time, not so long ago, when letters were a natural part of life.” —Publishers Weekly
