This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good Stories for Great Holidays, Arranged for Story-Telling and Reading Aloud and for the Children's Own Reading This volume, though intended also for the children's own reading and for reading aloud, is especially planned for story-telling. The latter is a delightful way of arousing a gladsome holiday spirit, and of showing the inner meanings of different holidays. As stories used for this purpose are scattered through many volumes, and as they are not always in the concrete form required for story-telling, I have endeavored to bring together myths, legends, tales, and historical stories suitable to holiday occasions. There are here collected one hundred and twenty stories for seventeen holidays - stories grave, gay, humorous, or fanciful; also some that are spiritual in feeling, and others that give the delicious thrill of horror so craved by boys and girls at Halloween time. The range of selection is wide, and touches, all sides of wholesome boy and girl nature, and the tales have the power to arouse an appropriate holiday spirit. As far as possible the stories are presented in their original form. When, however, they are too long for inclusion, or too loose in structure for story-telling purposes, they are adapted. Adapted stories are of two sorts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Celebrating 10 years of Otis, everyone's favorite tractor, created by the New York Times bestselling illustrator of Love by Matt de la Péna and The Little Engine that Could by Watty Piper! Otis is a special tractor. He loves his farm and farmer. He particularly loves the little calf in the next stall, whom he purrs to sleep with his soft motor. The two become great friends, romping in the fields, leaping bales of hay, and playing ring-around-the-rosy by Mud Pond. But when the big yellow tractor comes to the farm and replaces Otis, he is cast away behind the barn. . . until the little calf gets stuck in Mud Pond. Then there is only one tractor—and it’s not big or yellow—who saves the day. It’s little Otis! In the tradition of classics like Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel and The Story of Ferdinand, beloved artist Loren Long has crafted an unforgettable children's classic—and character—celebrating the power of friendship and perseverance. And now a whole new age group will fall in love with Otis, the friendly little tractor, thanks to this board book edition. Let the cries of putt puff puttedy chuff begin!

Book excerpt: In ancient Rome there lived a humble man named Valentine. He was a physician, but he was also a Christian priest whose life and freedom were in constant danger in a city of people who believed in many gods, not just one. One day a jailer from the emperor¿s prison appeared at Valentine¿s door with his small child, a girl who was blind. Knowing the difficulty of curing blindness, Valentine vowed to do his best, and over the weeks of treatment and prayer the three became fast friends. Here, accompanied by Sabuda¿s full-color mosaics evoking the time period in which the story takes place, is the story of a man whose goodness and faith brought about a miracle, and whose name lives on in one of our most celebrated holidays.
