Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good Form and Social Ethics The preparation of such a work is not without its difficulties; for even different sections of the same country, as well as different countries, do not always make the same demands. Neither do recognized authorities always agree in interpreting the demands of good society; and besides, customs and conventions change with the years. The general principles underlying these varied and varying conventions, however, are more akin and more stable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Ethics: Outlines of a Doctrine of Morals But, as the Professor himself says in his own prefatory note: Let the little book tell its own tale. It is not intended to edify or to proselytiee, but mainly only to teach and explain. Is that so entirely super uous 'i - is the contradiction altogether harmless which we so often find between what we have been taught from childhood about moral questions and duties, and what we practise in daily life, or see our neighbours practise t - these are questions that may well be asked. Possibly answers to both may be found in the following pages which may contribute to clear ness and truth on the subject. If so, the little work will have fulfilled its purpose.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Ethics: An Introduction to the Nature and Ethics of the State IN these days, when the social mind is troubled with a plethora of books, the writer who proposes an addition to the number should be ready to give a reason for the hope that is in him. There is no lack of social studies, but it seems to me that there is room for a book which treats social phenomena from a distinctively Christian point of view, and yet gives adequate place to the con elusions of science and philosophy. What is wanted is a Christian cosmic philosophy, for philosophy must be Christian to be cosmic. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Good Man and the Good: An Introduction to Ethics Many pages would be needed adequately to record my thanks to those who have helped me in my study of ethics. My acknowledgments must be limited to those who have aided directly in the preparation of the book: to my mother and my father, first of all; to my friends and colleagues, Professors Mary S. Case and Eleanor A. MCC. Gamble, expert critics, lavish of their time and their interest; and to one other - the brilliant, young sociologist, Carleton H. Parker, who throughout his life devoted his great gifts of eager scholarship, of keen judgment, and of human fellowship to all who turned to him, to his friends, his students, the industrial workers whom he understood, the state and country which he served. A golden morning's conversation with him 111 a California garden is held in my grateful memory by one of the chapters of this book. Book Ethics and Moral Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ethics and Moral Science Classic Reprint written by L. Levy-Bruhl and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ethics and Moral Science Undoubtedly, if ethical facts are considered from the outside, objectively, and in their relation to other social facts, they seem to belong to the same category, and consequently to be objects of science as they are. But so long as they are manifested subjectively in consciousness under the form of duties, remorse, feelings of blame, praise, etc., they possess an entirely different character. They seem to relate exclusively to action, and to depend solely on principles of practice. Oi the two conceptions the first is unusual, the second universally received. It is not less familiar to philosophy than to common sense, and has never shocked any one. The other is proper to scientific sociology which puts forth as a principle that ethical facts are social facts, and which concludes that the same method applies to one as to the other. It nearly always awakes a feeling of instinctive distrust in those who are not accus tomed_to look at things in that manner. Book The Elements of Social Justice Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Elements of Social Justice Classic Reprint written by L. T. Hobhouse and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Social Justice The subject of this book is the social application of the ethical principles explained by the writer in The Rational Good. These principles are summarized in Chapter I so as to be intelligible without reference to the preceding work, to which the reader is referred for the fuller statement of the arguments on which they are based. The treatment as here developed is therefore in form deductive, but this is not to say that it is an attempt to apply abstract principles without experience. On the contrary, the only valid principles are those that emerge out of our experience, and the function of the highest generalizations is to knit our partial views together in a consistent whole. That our social philosophy must form such a whole and that our social efforts suffer from lack of articulate statement and rational coherence is only too palpable. To promote unity of aim among men of goodwill and lay a basis of co-operation between those attacking different sides of the social problem is a practical problem of the highest importance. I have to thank Mr. J. A. Hobson for reading the Ms., and suggesting many valuable emendations; and Mr. A. W. Perris for performing the same service with the proofs. Book Practical Sociology in the Service of Social Ethics Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Sociology in the Service of Social Ethics Can a whole community form a correct judgment of these standards and methods? There is abroad in our country an ill-disguised contempt for democracy which has its basis partly in the facts of failure, and partly also in a misconception of what a democracy should be expected to judge and decide. If an entire community cannot, in any sense, form a judgment of the wisdom and morality of complex systems, then is our national pretension a huge falsehood. Book A Historical Introduction to Ethics Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Historical Introduction to Ethics Classic Reprint written by Thomas Verner Moore and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical Introduction to Ethics The criticism of moral systems constitutes a special section. In this way the repetition of objections which hold against a number of systems has been avoided. In the classroom, how ever, the author has departed from this plan. Students require and often request some kind of criticism before the lecturer passes from one system to another. The best plan in actual practice is to indicate the chief lines of criticism in concluding the analysis of an author, and toward the end of the course to summarize the various systems, giving a general and special criticism of the theories of morality. The collection of the points of criticism into one division, while having special advan tages in a printed work, need not interfere with the carrying out of the above method in practice, for it is a very easy matter to turn from one part of a book to another. In the choice of the types of ethical theory scarcely any two men would agree, and the author can scarcely hope to escape the accusation of most serious omissions. Some of these omissions will, however, be pardoned by one who bears in mind that the present work does not pretend to be a history of ethics, that the number of types must be relatively few, lest the student be lost in a maze of detail, and that the author can only hope to introduce the student to the field of ethical speculation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Ethics: Special Part; First Division: Individual Ethics N the General Part of this work (page 46 3) I gave my views on the relation existing between that and the more strictly practical part, which latter is now presented in two divisions, namely Individual and Social Ethics, the first of which has regard chiefly to the individual, the other to society. So, then, the whole essay is closed herewith, and experts will be able to prove what value may belong to the method here applied to the treatment of Ethics. But if the Special Part was to be connected with the General as a side-piece, there was needed a certain amplitude of statement and a form corresponding to the subjects handled. And from the whole design of this work, it will scarcely require an apology that parts occur in it of an edifying character, or at least bordering thereon. On the whole, it is to be remarked, however, that in the progress of a more ample statement, it is not always easy to hit the boundary between what the author has to express and what he can fitly leave to the reader to say to himself, a difficulty which makes itself felt more especially where so much is treated of that in a certain sense is known to all, although all do not therefore by any means rightly understand or have fully acknowledged it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Democracy and Race Friction: A Study in Social Ethics As would be naturally expected, by far the greater amount of the illustrative material for the principles laid down has been drawn from the relations of the whites and blacks in the southern states, where long residence has given the writer first-hand acquaint ance with the facts. Free use has been made, how ever, of data in connection with the relations of whites and blacks in the English colonies, especially in Jamaica and South Africa. The attitude of the whites of the Pacific coast towards the Chinese and Japanese convinces the writer that his conclusions hold not only for the negro, but for all races differ ing fundamentally from the general ethnic type of American citizenship. Book Elementary Ethics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Ethics Classic Reprint written by Noah Knowles Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-08 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Ethics As already indicated, the matter that constitutes the con tent Of Ethics is real truth. In order to become a science, wits matter must be developed in logical form whose perfection is attained through clear, distinct, complete and consistent treatment. TO approximate this ideal a methodical proce dure is requisite. Beginning with Observation, primarily Of facts Of consciousness gathered by introspection or furnished by testimony, and secondarily Of the behavior Of men in social relations, present and past, the intellect discovers in these phenomena the universally determinative notion Of inherent rights, native and acquired, and therein 'discerns a formative principle, imperative in character, and constituting the common bond Of Obligation among men. This strictly universal and necessary principle is not inductively general ized, but is intuitively discerned. From it deductions are then made to subordinate truths, until these, arranged in a logical system, shall extend throughout all lines of human activity, and comprehend all modes Of human Obligation. Ethics thus constituted is a deductive science. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Institutional Ethics Just at present evolutional ethics is in the ascend ency. Evolution is the watchword that explains all social phenomena. It is true that all the phenomena of society may be included in an ethical investigation; and farther, all of these phenomena may be reduced to an orderly arrangement and the law of this arrange ment may be enunciated, and then the various partial laws may be comprehended under one term, and that term may be evolution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of Ethics Judging from the course of many writers of text books on Ethics, the references here found in foot notes may be deemed either pedantic or useless, or both. But this is not intended merely as a text-book for classes in institutions of learning. It hopes to do something to direct and stimulate thought upon ethi cal questions in the wider world of thinking and practical men. And surely it ought not to be useless to refer college students and all intelligent readers to other accessible and interesting discussions of the same subject, if they are likely to be helpful or con firmatory or suggestive in any way. It is not ex pected in these days that college students or other readers will confine themselves doggedly to some one text, and not wish to look beyond it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Data of EthicsThe relations Of this work to works preceding it in the series, are such as to involve frequent reference. Contain ing, as it does, the outcome of principles set forth in each of them, I have found it impracticable to dispense with re-state ments Of those principles. Further, the presentation Of them in their relations to different ethical theories. Has made it needful, in every case, briefly to remind the reader what they are, and how they are derived. Hence an amount Of repetition which to some will probably appear tedious. I do not, however, much regret this almost unavoidable result; for only by varied iteration can alien conceptions be forced on reluctant minds.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
