Download or read book Good English Oral and Written Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by William H. Elson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Good English Oral and Written, Vol. 1 This book is intended for use in the third and fourth years of the elementary school. The authors believe that children speak and write for the same reason that adults do - to tell something that is in their minds, something related to their own experiences, some thing that has a note of personal interest or preference or Opinion. Therefore, the material on which conversation and written exercises are based has been selected with refer ence to its living interest to children and its vital relation to their experiences. This material, moreover, has had thorough test in the classroom. It is now generally agreed that children learn to speak and write interestingly and effectively by speaking and writing under proper inspiration and guidance. Something to say and someone to say it to - an interesting subject and an interested audience - are prime requisites for growth of language power. In this, moreover, oral speech holds first claim on the atten tion of the school, because we speak more than we write. Throughout this text the authors have held clearly in mind these fundamental principles. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oral English, Vol. 1 Men and women of genius have been thinking and writing on educational subjects for centuries. If all the truths which they have given to the world were embodied in practice the making of books might very well cease for a while. But theory runs far ahead of practice. Teachers are continually on the lookout for practical suggestion. It is only as they actually deal with the minds of children that they realize the truth of generalizations in fact, each must arrive at general truths for himself before they become vital and a real guide to practice. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oral and Written English: Primary Book How shall we displace with natural, correct, and pointed written expression the lifeless school composition of the past, the laborious production of which was of exceedingly doubtful educational value and gave pleasure neither to child nor to teacher? These are some of the questions to which this textbook aims to give constructive answers. Needless to say, much more is required in the way of answer than a supply of raw material for language work or a graded sequence of formal lessons in primary English. It is the purpose of the present book to provide a series of schoolroom situations, so built up as to give pupils delightful experiences in speaking and writing good English. Since one can no more teach without the interest of the pupil than see with out light, these situations have for their content the natural inter ests of children. They therefore include child life and the heroic aspects of mature life, fairies and fairyland, and the outer world. Book Lessons in the Speaking and Writing of English Vol 1

Download or read book Lessons in the Speaking and Writing of English Vol 1 written by John M. Manly and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lessons in the Speaking, and Writing of English, Vol. 1: Book One Language Lessons The study of English is of supreme importance to the people of the United States. With no other subject in the curriculum is the national well-being so intimately connected. The very existence of the republic depends in no small measure upon the possession and use of a language that carries the same meaning clearly and unequivocally to every citizen, of whatever race or traditions. This would be true even if language were merely an instrument of communication which left unchanged the mind and character of its user. But, as everyone knows, no language can be used habitually without modifying profoundly the forms of thought, the knowledge, the beliefs, the traditions, the ideals, and the character of anyone who uses it. The English language is therefore the most potent single force now transforming our heterogeneous population into a homogeneous and unified people. But this is not all. Language, not as an instrument of use, but as an object of study, is unsurpassed for the development of the thinking powers. True of all languages, this is especially true of English, the whole organization and meaning of which exercise the logical and rational faculties. Whatever may be the case with other languages, English cannot be studied as a purely formal discipline. The content is of greater importance than the form; and the content of language is as varied as human life and almost as educative. It is desirable, therefore, that English should be taught in our schools not only in such ways as will provide a uniform in strument of clear and exact communication, but also in such ways as will cultivate the power of clear and exact thinking, and establish noble ideals of life and character. Success in this arduous but inspiring task lies in the hands of the teachers of our common schools and of those who have the power to lighten or make heavy their task by providing or with holding the proper conditions and means of labor. Book excerpt: Israel Bond may seem like a simple-if-sexy salesman for Mother Margolies' Old World Chicken Soup, but when the Holy Land needs his skills - his quickness with a pun, his second-to-none semitic seduction techniques, and (if absolutely necessary) his abilities at actual espionage - then the man known by the code name Oy-Oy-7 (licensed not only to kill, but to say prayers over the corpse) is there to do what needs be done. In a land surrounded by its enemies, Oy-Oy-7 is called on to guard the nation's great benefactor, the generous but odd Lazarus Loxfinger. Is there more to Loxfinger than meets the eye? Bond aims to find out, even if doing so requires sleeping with dozens of exotic beauties! In the mid-1960s, when Playboy was serializing the adventures of the world's most famous superspy, they interspersed them with the rollicking adventures of Israel's most hilarious weapon, Israel Bond. After the book editions of what the Chicago Tribune called "probably the funniest secret agent parodies ever written" had sold over a million copies, they were allowed to fall out of print. Decades later, all four books in the Israel Bond series are now back in new editions!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Spoken and Written: Book I; Lessons in Language, for Primary Grades The books of this course in English are closely related in purpose, matter, and method. They aim to arouse in our boys and girls an abiding interest in the correct and effective use of the English of to-day as well as to give them a clear insight into the structure of the English language. This book has been carefully planned to meet the needs of primary grades in public and private schools. The authors have employed practically the same methods, and, in part, have used the same material as in the first book of "Modern English," which has met with such pronounced favor. Instead of relying upon technical grammar to mold the daily speech of children, emphasis is laid upon practice in speaking, reading, interpreting, and writing under the guidance of the teacher. The authors believe in the supreme importance of interest in successful language study. They have, therefore, spared no pains in determining upon the topics to be presented and in subjecting their choice to repeated tests in the schoolroom. The lessons are based upon home life, school associations, and familiar sights and sounds in nature. Pictures, stories, poems, exercises, suggested readings, have all been chosen in accordance with this plan, to the end that children may view language less as an unrelated branch of study than as a unifying medium for all school studies and out-of-school experiences. In developing the plan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Reading and Conversation Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Reading and Conversation Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Louis Tesson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reading and Conversation, Vol. 1 This new method is based on the fact that the spoken language is the most essential portion and the necessary foundation of elementary studies; writing, which should begin with the transcription of sounds, is only a rough equivalent of speech, a natural accompaniment of the study of the spoken language; and reading is dependent on a knowledge of writing. Speaking, reading and writ ing belong together, and should not be needlessly separated. With the ordinary methods, however intelligent and industrious an illiterate person may be, he can hardly study profitably by himself. He needs a teacher who can give him the pronunciation of the written words, since his book does not indicate it at all, or does so only in an imperfect way. Most words are riddles for him; he finds it hard to learn the sounds, and perhaps even more difficult to remember them. It is clear that he can learn only a few at a time, and it is natural that he should begin with the simplest ones in order to acquire harder ones by greater efforts of memory. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Year English Book It is based on a few simple i(deas of art and life. First, for children of high school age certainly the practice of the art of writing is not an end but a means.) It should lead not primarily to literary skill, but to development of general power and capacity) If this art is being practiced to that worthy end, there will be clear evidence of it. Natural exercise of innate power is pleasurable. Forced exercise of powers which are not ready for development is disagreeable, if not pain ful. Now self - expression, even expression by means of written words, is delightful to the pupil if his genuine powers are utilized. Interest and pleasure are merely the symptoms of normal development and healthful exercise. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The English that they use in talking may not be very good, and usually they are not able to write it at all. During the first three years at school, however, they improve in speech, and learn also how to express their thoughts, in a simple way, in writing. During this period of the child's life, a large preportion of time should be, and usually is, given to cultivating the power of observation by the study of plants, animals, and other natural objects that may be obtained in the vicinity of the school.
