Book Loving Learning How Progressive Education Can Save America s Schools

Download or read book Loving Learning How Progressive Education Can Save America s Schools written by Tom Little and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2015-03-02 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noted educator Tom Little and Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist Katherine Ellison reveal the home-grown solution to turning American students into life-long learners. The longtime head of Park Day School, Tom Little embarked on a tour of 43 progressive schools across the country. In this book, his life’s work, he interweaves his teaching experience, the knowledge he gleaned from his trip, and the history of Progressive Education. As Little and Katherine Ellison reveal, these educators and schools invigorate learning and promote inquisitiveness by allowing the curriculum to grow organically out of children's questions—whether they lead to studying the senses, working on a farm, or re-creating a desert ecosystem in the classroom. We see curious students draw on information across disciplines to think in imaginative yet practical ways, like in a "Mini-Maker Faire" or designing and building a chair from scratch. Becoming good citizens was another of Little's goals. He believed in the need for students to learn how to become advocates for themselves, from setting rules on the playground to engaging in issues of social justice in the wider community. Using the philosophy of Progressive Education, schools can prepare students to shape a vibrant future in the arts and sciences for themselves and the nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This "provocative and personally searching"memoir follows one mother's story of enrolling her daughter in a local public school (San Francisco Chronicle), and the surprising, necessary lessons she learned with her neighbors. From the time Courtney E. Martin strapped her daughter, Maya, to her chest for long walks, she was curious about Emerson Elementary, a public school down the street from her Oakland home. She learned that White families in their gentrifying neighborhood largely avoided the majority-Black, poorly-rated school. As she began asking why, a journey of a thousand moral miles began. Learning in Public is the story, not just Courtney’s journey, but a whole country’s. Many of us are newly awakened to the continuing racial injustice all around us, but unsure of how to go beyond hashtags and yard signs to be a part of transforming the country. Courtney discovers that her public school, the foundation of our fragile democracy, is a powerful place to dig deeper. Courtney E. Martin examines her own fears, assumptions, and conversations with other moms and dads as they navigate school choice. A vivid portrait of integration’s virtues and complexities, and yes, the palpable joy of trying to live differently in a country re-making itself. Learning in Public might also set your family’s life on a different course forever.

Book Every Child Left Behind

Download or read book Every Child Left Behind written by Abe Feinberg and published by . This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public ignorance is the school administration's best friend With education on the firing line today and the intensity growing, this is a must read for people who want to see teaching improvements in their school districts. Over a period of five years, I was subjected to an alarming series of injustices at the hands of the school administration, the board of education, and the Superior Court of Alameda County. The story graphically describes an entrenched school administration's senseless attempts to destroy a teacher who refused on principle to knuckle under at the expense of his students. Briefly stated, I was conspired against, lied about, and made the subject of intolerant actions. My repeated pleas and demands for help, counsel, and redress of grievances were evaded, ignored, and openly refused. In rapid succession I was illegally transferred to a position I was unprepared for, illegally fired, and then in superior court treated to a devastating travesty of the judicial process by a judge who clearly should have been removed from the bench. During the two-year appeal process I was unable to get another job -the school district saw to it that I was blackballed in education. In short my reputation was ruined, as in all likelihood was my teaching career. The board also tried to suppress the town's uprising to reinstate me to my former teaching position. All this happened when I began an individualized teaching process, which was met with resistance by the principal. The more successful I became, the more the district fought it. When I spoke out for educational improvements and wrote a newspaper column espousing the importance of upgrading teaching, the ship hit the sand. But changing teaching methods was only a part of what was to come. Soon the town was in the middle of gross mismanagement, embezzling, the misuse of hundreds of thousands of dollars of school district funds, and a school board trying to cover it up. There is more than ample documentation, including letters, news stories, sworn affidavits, and most damning of all, the trial transcript. The board and the administration broke State Law in their mindless vendetta to fire this teacher -the students be damned. To attest to the widespread mismanagement in school districts, I have included accounts of school problems nationally, and a well-documented account of the distressed Oakland, California, schools and the mis-education that continues to occur in Oakland. With news accounts appearing daily, weekly, and monthly, this story was the biggest 5-year story in the Livermore valley.
