Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on articles written for the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, author Richard J. Gonzales draws on his educational, inner-city and professional life experiences to weave eyewitness testimony into issues facing Chicanos, including economic, health, education, criminal justice, politics, immigration, and cultural issues. Raza Rising presents a personal recounting of a Chicano's struggle with and understanding of the socio-economic policies and historical actions that impact their ascendancy. Raza Rising offers first-hand observations, supported by well-documented scholarly research, of Chicanos' growth and subsequent struggles to participate fully in North Texas' political and economic life. Raza Rising takes the reader to the organization of a Fort Worth immigration reform march, to the actual march with 20,000 people on Main Street on Palm Sunday, to a protest demonstration of the City of Farmers Branch's attempt to prohibit renting to the undocumented immigrant, to the author's awakening in Chicago on the importance of learning, and to his poignant experience as a guest speaker in a Fort Worth public school classroom. Other observations offer insight on how Chicanos struggle with their ethnic identity and understanding of their history. In addition, the book highlights important historical and political events that illustrate Chicanos' attempts to overcome barriers to their rise. At a time when global economic competition threatens the United States' first world status, this country must nurture academic excellence for all its citizens. Raza Rising provides specific explanations for the Chicano educational lag and workable solutions to accelerate their political, economic and academic achievements. Prophetic state and national demographers have forecasted the steady increase in Chicano populations and decrease in white populations. Raza Rising offers students, instructors, policy makers, politicians and neighbors a deeper understanding of Chicanos, who in the near future will transition from minority to majority status in Texas.

Book excerpt: Cortez is your typical small Texas town, where the weekly football game takes place on Friday nights. It's a town where more people drive on gravel roads than paved roads. It's a town where the cops know everyone, and they know everything everyone does. But for DW, Cortez is a town he has to leave; DEAD or ALIVE.Cortez is a coming of age crime story about DW, who is a high school teenager who knows the difference between right and wrong. But when life comes at him head on he is forced to make some decisions that most teenagers never have to think about. Without any adult guidance in DW's life, he makes a decision to start selling drugs to help his best friend who has become addicted to crack. The money comes quickly and more easily than working on the farm. As soon as he pays back the money for his friend he continues to make some money for himself. Quickly DW's luck runs out and instead of getting busted, a corrupt local cop who works with a local drug dealer starts to demand money. DW wants to quit selling drugs but the cop continues to demand payments. Eventually DW makes the right decision and goes straight to get his life back in order. One night after going to the movies with his girlfriend, DW and her get into a fight. She leaves his house, and is found the next morning on the side of the road dead with drugs. The whole town blames DW for her death, but he is the only one who knows who actually did it. After getting kicked out of school, DW goes out and proves to everyone that he is not the person they are making him out to be. He fixes his life and signs up for the Army but before he leaves he has one thing left he needs to do. Drugs, murder, guns, money, family, friends, school, cops, and a girl all play a part into Cortez and DW's life.

Book True Faith and Allegiance

Download or read book True Faith and Allegiance written by Alberto R. Gonzales and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2016-09-06 with total page 519 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True Faith and Allegiance is the highly-anticipated personal history from Alberto R. Gonzales, former Attorney General of the United States and former Counsel to the President—the only lawyer and only Hispanic to hold both these positions—an ultimate insider in the most tumultuous events in recent history. Born to a poor but proud working-class family in Humble, Texas, Gonzales was raised along with his seven siblings in a modest 2-bedroom home. His loving and devout parents taught him the conservative values of hard work and accountability that motivated Gonzales to the highest echelons of power. He was a confidante to President George W. Bush during the crucible of the 9/11 attacks, and he played a vital role in the administration’s immediate response to protect America and the far-reaching steps to prevent further harm.
