Esta circunstancia histórica permitía al autor presentar en todo su esplendor medieval la corte de los Reyes Católicos, y dar participación en la acción de la novela a algunos héroes famosos de la primera parte de las Guerras civiles y del romancero, tales como el propio don Alonso, don Manuel Ponce de León, Garcilaso, el Alcaide de los Donceles, etcétera.
