Book Joleen

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ed Bach
  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release : 2018-04-14
  • ISBN : 1532042752
  • Pages : 788 pages

Download or read book Joleen written by Ed Bach and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2018-04-14 with total page 788 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a ten-year absence, Ed Bach, author of the controversial collection of short stories, So Long, Charlie, delivers his latest and most complex novel to date, Joleen. Bachs latest work is an unsentimental look at two people struggling to make sense of the world, the beautiful but mentally unbalanced, Joleen Simmons and her clinging, colorless husband, Hush Simmons. Entering high school, Joleen becomes an immediate sensation. She is sweet, charming and very beautiful. But that sweet high school introduction abruptly ends when a lurid side of Joleen reveals itself and she is abruptly snubbed by her many friends. In college, Joleen joins a well-respected theatrical group where her natural gifts bring immediate success. She quickly maneuvers to the top only to blow it when she is given the lead in the schools featured play and is laughed from the stage. Rejected, she takes a job she hates. She becomes restless and marries a man she will soon regret. She torments her daughter yet confides in a sister who continually betrays her. She bullies her mother yet adores a womanizing, drunken father. She performs whorishly in bed with a husband she refuses to kiss. Reminiscent of April Wheeler in Richard Yates, Revolutionary Road, Joleen Simmons is a woman thrust into a life she neither wants nor accepts. No one can say for certain if Joleen is a complete nut case, mentally unbalanced, crazy, or simply someone so broken by the events of her past that she unashamedly torments and manipulates her way through life. And what of Hush Simmons, the fawning high school friend Joleen marries, divorces, then quickly lures back into bed? Is it her natural beauty that drives him to the limits of his own sanity? Her superior upbringing? Her familys wealth? Or is it Joleens raunchy behavior that steals his personal identity and turns him into a man he no longer recognizes, someone so corrupted by his wifes physical aggression that he loses sight of who he is and what he has become, a murderer? From the author of So Long, Charlie, Bach delivers an existential examination into the lives of two people at war with each other and themselves, a couple so riddled with childhood memories that their present actions only serve to drive them further and further apart. Bach offers no answers to lifes greater mysteries. Instead he brings to mind questions the reader may wonder about for years. While the story and its many characters are fictionalized, the storys central plot, is real.

Book War Dawgs

    Book Details:
  • Author : Franklin D. R. Kestner
  • Publisher : Turner Publishing Company
  • Release : 1998
  • ISBN : 9781563114519
  • Pages : 172 pages

Download or read book War Dawgs written by Franklin D. R. Kestner and published by Turner Publishing Company. This book was released on 1998 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second book in an ongoing trilogy about the military career of a remarkable soldier and officer. The first book, "To the Last Man!" Kulbes' Mongrels at the Chosin Reservoir, described D Company of the 10th Combat Engineers during the icy ordeal at the Chosin Reservoir and their against-all-odds withdrawal to Pusan.During the month of November 1950, 350,000 Chinese troops quietly joined forces with a nearly defeated North Korean People's Army. On November 28, the two armies initiated a surprise counter-attack against combined South Korean, American, and United Nations' forces so confident of victory that their northern advance had been labeled the "Home By Christmas Offensive." The undetected build-up of forces in those snowy peaks and canyons was a remarkable military feat. Equally remarkable was the subsequent defense and evacuation from Hungnam to Pusan by the 7th and 5th Marines, to which Kulbes' Mongrels had been temporarily attached.By the time the Mongrels arrived at Hamhung, inside the perimeter held by General Soule's Third Division, they had suffered more than 50% casualties. Their daily reports had been lost in the chaos of battle, however, and for too long, they were not recognized for their role at the Chosin. Their status as a temporarily "lost" company, combined with their cocky attitude, created ongoing friction with headquarters. As a result, they were assigned to demolition of docks and ordnance and had to watch as units they had fought alongside debarked for the security of Pusan. In reality, that assignment was probably both a punishment for their cocky attitude as well as recognition of their notable efficiency as combat engineers. "War Dawgs" was General Soule's nickname for the Mongrels.

Book The Lives of Conn Smythe

Download or read book The Lives of Conn Smythe written by Kelly McParland and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2012-10-02 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the story of the Toronto Maple Leafs has been told many times, there has never been a full biography of the man who created, built and managed the team, turning it from a small-market collection of second-rate players into the hockey and financial powerhouse that dominated Canadian sports and created a collection of Canadian icons along the way. From the 1920s to the mid-1960s, Conn Smythe was one of the best-known, highest-profile figures in the country -- irascible, tempestuous, outspoken, and controversial. He not only constructed a hockey team that dominated the league for long stretches, but was critical to the growth and shaping of the NHL itself. By building Maple Leaf Gardens and hiring Foster Hewitt to fill Canada's living rooms with weekly broadcasts, he turned Saturday night into hockey night, creating institutions and habits that became central to Canada's character and remain with us today. Smythe's story is much deeper and richer than the tale of a cantankerous hockey owner. Smythe fought in both world wars, fighting at Ypres and Passchendaele in the first war and landing at Normandy in the second. He was wounded in both and spent two years as a POW in a German camp after being shot down in 1917. He grew up in poverty and vowed to escape the life that was so incredibly hard on his family. Smythe was active in politics and ignited a national crisis over conscription that split the Liberal government in two and brought Mackenzie King to the brink of resignation. This book tells the life of one of the country's great characters, a man who helped shape and define us and who left behind national habits and institutions that continue to lay at the heart of what makes Canada, Canada.

A fast-flowing chain of events rapidly unfolds; enthralling, hold-yourbreath occurrences that lead inexorably to what will be called the trial of the century-a powerful courtroom drama, as provocative as it is divisive, that pits two of the world's finest lawyers against each other in a contest that puts everything on the line, with the potential to abolish centuries of hard-earned rights for millions. It is a trial, controversial, incendiary, and tainted with madness, that sets the stage to blow the lid off the naïve belief that there are some things that just can't happen in America. Suspenseful, alarming, and destined for controversy, Decision and Dissent is to be counted among those rare novels that require courage on the part of the reader; virtually every page will affect the reader like no story he or she has ever read before. Explosive action, humour, and provocative points of view expressed by characters who leap to life will hold the reader spellbound to the very last page.
